Are others with a newer Russian 91% finding the vertical juice channels to be completely inadequate for proper wicking?

Yup I'm gonna drill/file mine out. I have 50/50 and get burnt hit every three puffs. It's annoying to have to prime so much. Half the time I overprice causing it to leak.

I have the newest Russian 91% and am currently using 100% VG through it.

When you bore out the vertical channels you risk flooding the chamber every time you inhale, since there isn't any cotton there to stop it. They are basically just two small straws.

Before performing major surgery I'd check my wick first.

Using ecowool. Wick cut to where it just touches deck does not cover wick holes. Tried airflow loose to tight and still can't get consistent wicking without resorting to priming by blocking off the airflow with my thumb and doing a hard pull.

The ecowool is probably the issue. Have you tried cotton? It wicks a lot better than ecowool.

What about your coil? Is it a microcoil? What diameter?

I find 5/64 diameter micro works the best in Kayfuns. That seems to be the sweet spot for wick diameter.

I'll second this. Ecowool was the number one source of dry hits on mine. I could not stand cotton from prior experiences, however I tried cotton (make sure its 100%) and never looked back.

No dry hits unless I get careless and make a sloppy build.

I haven't tried cotton in the Russian yet. Don't know the diameter but I believe it's the same width as the air hole post.

I do use cotton in my dripper with dual nano coils. Works good once the cotton taste goes away.

Make sure the cotton you get is 100% cotton and preferably organic. Easy way to test your cotton is to grab a piece with tweezers and torch it. If it basically disintegrates, you are good. If it melts together, well.....

Yeah I got some from CVS. I got a box of the "Sterile cotton balls Hypo-Allergenic 100% pure absorbent cotton" also has the cotton logo and the latex free logo.
It shoulda been enough for a lifetime but I stored them my medicine cabinet, so now they taste like medicine and make-up. Next time I'm gonna triple bag them to prevent the balls from absorbing outside scents.

After some experimentation with the wick, I'm happy to say that performance has gotten much better. I'm using cotton and after making the wick a bit longer than I did initially and stuffing it to cover the entire base of the chamber, including placing it at the channels, it is wicking really well.

good to hear it's wicking well. odd that it does with the channels blocked

Ha! They're not blocked, just really small holes with about 1mm visible when the cylinder is attached. If you mean the wick blocking, I'm not compressing it into the channel but rather gently placing it directly above. I believe this talk of "blocking" with the wick is somewhat of a misnomer since loose cotton is more than porous enough to allow air to penetrate. I definitely have better performance now that the cotton is directly over the holes, as opposed to when it sat nearby.

Pure Cotton - Koh Gen Do | Sephora

No flavor break in, straigh(ish) fibers, crazy easy to cut and wick with consistency. Separate one of the pads like opening a sandwich, then cut a thin strip along the fiber grain. Twist one end into a point and slide it right through the coil.

Cool thanks. I'll check it out. Flavor break in on the balls I'm using usually last a full day +/- It sucks during that time.

Looking good. Those Provari bases look to be an awesome accessory for an around the house mod. Built in stand no matter where you put it.

I can't say enough for the base around the house~! I was forever knocking my ProVari over, and this does stop it.
