Wow, haven't posted here in a while. Boring day at work. It's Christmas (Merry Christmas!)and no one seems to be having computer problems.... Killing time waiting for scheduled system restarts.

Anyway, I've been receiving flavorings for Christmas since I quit smoking and think someone gave me the ultimate gift! A friend gave me McCormick artificial "Pandan" flavor. Smells just like RY4 juice, perhaps minus a hint of tobacco flavor. A little more research brought me to Wikipedia: 2-Acetyl-1-pyrroline is an aroma compound and flavor that gives white bread, jasmine rice and basmati rice, the spice pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius), and bread flowers (Vallaris glabra) their typical smell.

It's not a flavor we typically use here. This could explain some of the mystery?

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll report back. If anyone else gets this flavor, let me know what you think! :)

After looking at some info on the web, I think you might be onto something here. And because its not a flavor, we here in the west are familiar with, we have trouble describing it. I saw description on the web that said its sweet, another say its nutty. And every dish seems to be green!!!! Green cake!!! It looks delicious.

and check this out: Pandan essence / Screwpine Paste, available online from ImportFood.com

One of the ingredients here is PG...hmmmmm...I may have to get some and vape it up lol

Also, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I've seen the Pandan Essence at the local Asian markets. It looked to me like it might leave too much of a residue in your atty, so I didn't investigate it any further. The stuff I received for Christmas is clear like so:

I may not have tried many commercial RY4, mainly the Dekang brand RY4 that comes over from China and the RY4 flavoring from Health Cabin which seems to be the same thing. I've also tried the RY4 from Pure Smoker and one other that I can't remember. I may not have tried a wide variety of RY4, but I have definitely consumed a large quantity. I think that I am familiar with the flavor. I'm a big fan!

How I mixed: 0.5ml of McCormick Pandan flavor (about 15 drops) into 5ml container. Self-mixed PG based 21 mg unflavored juice to top off.

What I think of it: Rich slightly nutty flavor, with sweet and flowery tones. Exhaling the vapor seems very slightly astringent. Very powerful, perhaps the flavor is a little too strong.

Overall, if someone was to send me this pre-mixed and call it RY4, I would say it passes. I believe, this IS the main constituent in the RY4 flavor we are familiar with. It does not seem to be as sweet as the Dekang juice I am familiar with, but they may be adding a sweetener or other additives to it to top off the flavor to call it "RY4."

I will have to try this with other strengths of the flavor...

Again, If someone else tries or has tried this please post your thoughts!

What device are you vaping on Seth? I think that is always the missing factor in flavor reviews. I've only had LiteCig "Americano" RWHY4, which is tasty but just sweet/caramel. I didn't like Dekang RY4 at all. Noxious chemical smell for a few days then became vapeable but nothing to write home about. I've never tried "the real RY4" but Ikenvape is supposed to be getting something soon...that is supposed to be like the old stuff.

I just noticed Pandan listed here on trending flavors for 2011 from P&F newsletter:

Sensient Predicts Hot Flavors for 2011
Posted: December 21, 2010

Sensient Flavors (Indianapolis, IN) announced its 2011 flavor trends predictions. Created by filtering larger trends—such as health and wellness, sensory and personalization—down and translating them directly into flavors, the trends help serve up opportunities for up-and-coming flavors within the industry, according to Sensient director of food solutions Emil Shmer.

The predictions include flavors of:

aguaje—a nutritious Peruvian fruit with vividly orange flesh and a sweet taste that is similar to that of a carrot;
aerbere—a mixture of cayenne pepper, allspice, cardamom, cloves, fenugreek, ginger, black pepper and salt spice with Ethiopian origins;
borojo—an energy-boosting fruit with sweet and sour tastes commonly grown in Colombia and Ecuador;
Ceylon cinnamon—featuring citrus overtones and less sweet than cassia cinnamon, this complex flavor is often used in England and Mexico;
cherimoya—a tropical fruity flavor native to Ecuador, Colombia and Peru, the fruit also includes notes of green and even a slight cream;
grains of paradise—dried seeds with a complex flavor mixing citrus, earthy, heat, herb and woody notes to reflect its African origins;
hibiscus—offering a tart, tangy berry taste, the flower’s flavor is well-known in South America and the Caribbean;
pandan—grown in tropical regions in Asia, this plant is sweet in both flavor and aroma;
yacon—the Peruvian vegetable features a one-of-a-kind flavor both earthy and fruity that could be compared to the taste of an apple;
and yumberry—a Chinese fruit, known there as the Yang Mei, that features a sweet, tart flavor.

not a very good description though

What device are you vaping on Seth?

I'm currently using an Ego Njoy 510 just about all the time, which is what I tested this flavor with. I think the battery I was using this morning is actually a look alike to a "real" Njoy model, but it's still 3.5 volts all the same. I'll switch over to the Prodigy V2 once in a while, but it's such a pain to look after...

Noxious chemical smell for a few days

I had that too. I think they mixed up a bad batch. I threw it away and wrote to my supplier. Tasted like burning plastic smells.

I should note that after vaping it all day Pandan flavor hasn't been unpleasant at all for me. I did get an after taste that I might describe a "yeasty" for a bit. Like the after taste from eating hot baked bread. Could have been from the cheap coffee I was drinking, but it seems unlikely.

I'm still standing by my (generalized) statement that this flavor is "at least part" of the RY4 flavoring.

I don't know if my RY4 was as bad as yours or not. I vaped ~15ml of it because I had nothing else good at the time. Now it is all DIY, never vaping chinese juice again, just don't trust their QC.

Anyhow, you did a good job describing the taste I think. I trust that you know what old RY4 was like so it is a great find. I'm sure I will see the flavoring around an asian supermarket sometime and report back when I try it.

Seth: you may have made the single most significant discovery in DIY eliquid flavoring history!

Other names for Pandan, in case it helps when searching local markets:

Vietnamese: La Dua
Indian: Rampe
Thai: Bai Toey

Interesting fact: pandan leaves become fragrant only after wilting. Dried leaves lose their aroma.

I read that the pandan scent repels cockroaches. Sound odd, don't it?

I read that too... it does seem odd. I still prefer to kill them, but I won't be vapping a can of Raid anytime in the near or distant future.

Just about finished of the first 5ml I mixed up. Contemplating what I should add. Perhaps a few drops of Flavour Art maple syrup... yum!
