OMG!!!! Now that I can smell better my house freaking reeks!!! I have a dog and she's peed on the carpet quite a few times. I've cleaned it up and thought all was well.
This is seriously driving me crazy.... I can't stand it. Been looking at getting new carpet today. The shampooer didn't cut it.
The worst thing is I've had company over and didn't even know it smelled so bad... I'm sooooo embarrassed!!

Well at least you can make right of all the smell from smoking so long but yes its a good thing you're getting your sense of smell back that means your body is healing :)

Im sure alot of that odor was masked by cigarette smoke anyways.

Scuzzy... I didn't smoke in the house... thank god!!!! That would be a whole other issue to deal with. I did smoke in the car and yes.... that has got to be thoroughly cleaned also... yuck!

Falsedi... I might try that but I'm pretty sure it won't work. I've got old hardwood underneath. Maybe I can do something with that.

You can def do something with the old hardwood floor.. I used to be in the Home Rehabing Business and can tell you that we turned old hardwood floors into looking like you are walking into a new construction luxury home.. If you decide to sand & refinish, dont let them charge you over $1.50 a sq ft..

Thanks Newb.!!! Good info. I was wondering what the going price was. I thought it was way more then that... :)

no prob! Remember, they will try to trick you into paying more.. but just tell them you want it sanded, finished with 2 coats of your preffered color, (natural, cherry ect..) and clear coat.. If they try to charge you more, tell them you have a bid for $1.50 a ft but they are too busy and you need to wait so if they match your price, you will go with them... (I know how to handle these people lol)

Oh Defiant,

Your post had me laughing my .... off. Smell and taste has come back since getting off the cigs almost 3 months now. My scotch taste better and the poundage I seem to have added on over the Holidays is slowing diminishing due to a small diet I'm doing(very small) as I put my fat buttocks on the scale after the New Year and found to my shagrin that I am the heaviest I have ever been in my life. I need to change that as the springtime of my life has past me bye.

Put a big glass bowl of white vinegar in each room and closet and leave it there for at least 24 hours. It really does help get rid of some of the cigarette stink.

I use that trick when I'm frying stinky foods...fish, onions, etc. It really does work. (I put a small bowl 1/2 filled with vinegar on the counter)

you should get some weewee pads for your dog if you don`t already
my maltese is not helpin` me save money w/ this economy b/c he refuses to go on newspapers, that SPOILED PRISSY LITTLE...loveable brat. [:
but yeah the weewee pads seem to work for him.
i also trick my little sucker by cuttin` up the pad into four pieces & puttin` it in the center of a bunch of newspapers & they usually learn to go there anyway.

so HA, i win. :w00t:

oh & i`m not sure if this is an asian thing but puttin` old coffee grounds or stale coffee beans in a glass bowl always adds a nice touch to the room & helps eliminate odd odors.

PS. rose petals on top of the coffee adds color to it & steps it up on a notch on the fancy scale

That's a good tip! Thanks for sharing it.

To get rid of odors, including cigarette and musty smells, I put either a handful of coffee beans or a few garlic bulbs in a toaster oven set on high for 30 minutes or so. The garlic or coffee smell dissipates in a few hours. I'll also use undiluted white vinegar in small container placed around a room but it takes longer.
