i love how this thread has become like a group hug of people who had to or are having to give away a beloved pet...sorry to the OP as i know we are way off topic but it's kind of a nice moment we're all sharing
'Cause many of us have lost a mom and a pet. Both are tough. Off topic maybe, but typical NT family.
Best rat thing I've seen in a while is this little dog that befriended a rat that I've followed on FB. Same breed dog I have and they were bred to chase/kill rats eons ago. Interesting how the two bonded and pretty cool to watch the progression.
We have had them as pets until recently. Smart little suckers.
Sheldon traveled with us everywhere and was house trained.
They make great pets when you get them young.

There's an excellent product you can get called Zylkene - you'll need the specific cat version:
Zylkene is classified as a food supplement It is made from a milk protein. The active ingredient is a peptide that has the ability of impacting brain receptors. This action has a soothing effect on the animal. It is effective for both cats and dogs. It can be purchased in three different sizes of capsule and the choice is determined based on the size of the pet to be treated
The pills can be opened and the contents sprinkled on food or the entire capsule can be given orally in the original form once a day. Most animals find it palatable and owners find it easy to administer. It is suitable for both a short-term treatment, which could be for a few days, or for longer periods if needed. Usually a course is given from between 2-4 weeks . Then the situation is re-assessed. If in doubt ask your vet.
Zylkene soon helps animals to handle many stressful situations. It may also be a solution for several behavioural problems,
It is advisable to begin administration at least 8 days before expected stressor, when possible. The medicine should be given once every day and can be doubled if the situation is exceedingly stressful.
You almost certainly won't observe an immediate change in your pet however little changes could possibly be seen within a few days.
It's available from pet stores & online, etc. It's perfectly safe, and whether used for temporary situations such as fireworks etc, or for longer term situations, it's quite safe to use. I emailed the manufacturer to check that they were safe to try for seizures, and got a positive reply really quickly.
We have a large dog who started getting seizures each time the groomers came to bath/clip our two. The vet decided she was too young to start taking seizure medication, so I found that and he thought it an excellent idea.
We start giving her one capsule in her food three days before the groomers are due, and continue it for 4 days after. In the two years we've been using it, she's only had one seizure, and that was 18 months ago when the whole household was going through a very stressful period.
Definitely worth a try, and if that fails, the vet may be able to give you something stronger.
We adore our dogs, and I especially love this big girl we have ...love her to bits!

much love cuse - it is hard because our pets are such a part of our lives. heck especially dogwogs because they're so companionable - boomer even sleeps with chrissy and i sometimes, he's a huge cuddle bug

Aw - cute pets and stories - we are learning so much about each other and the things that touch our hearts! 
We've had just about every pet over the course of time - dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chameleons, frogs - I am sure I am leaving out a few. All left their mark in my heart and on my soul! The dog and frog each lived to be 16 years old, still miss that dog terribly - the frog, not so much!
Sloth, I hope things work out with the kitty!

Meg - so sad about the little rats and their tumors -- some of our guineas had to have surgeries to remove them. Smart little buggers they were though - they knew the sound of the garage door opener and we could hear them squealing in the house anticipating our arrival and a treat when we walked in the door. They were litter box trained, loved to watch TV, and rode in the car with my kids. Great memories!

Several doxie lovers here in the NuThouse, cuse! Distorto's got three of 'em, humgingher has a couple, too, if I remember correctly. My 'grand-dogger" is a long haired English Cream doxie named Daisy. She follows the granddaughters around stealing food all day. Let's just say she's "PLUS SIZED" now from snatching easy food from the toddlers! Gotta love a doxie - nothing they won't eat! And so much personality in a low-ridin' body.yes ma'am, it sure is! best breed in the world, imo

Sophie was 18 months old when we got 12 week old Georgia - we did hold our breath ...but they started playing right away and Soph knows exactly how to play with such a small pal! One is larger than the average for her breed, the other smaller!
They wake me up every morning one at a time, and then, when I get up, Soph just gently stands up, puts both front paws around my neck and hugs me like mad! Love them both dearly, but Soph is my big girl!

When I was young and fairly ignorant of such things, there I was, 18 and just married ...saw a pretty green parrot for sale, so on a whim, brought it home ...or to be precise, walked down the street to the garage where my husband worked at the time.
Apparently, the apprentice rushed in and told him "you'll never guess what your wife is walking down the street with!"
He got used to her, and truth was, she was a biter - took lumps out of me and my husband. Yet she really liked my Dad ...would walk down the arm of his specs, look in through a lens and coyly put her head on one side to tell him "pretty Polly!" ...then take a treat from between his teeth.
We were told she was insanely jealous at times because she thought what she could see in the mirror was a rival for our affection, so got cross with us!
One day she flew into a real rage and started viciously dive bombing me - just a month before our first son was born. I ran, she tore after me, misjudged and hit the door frame head on. She broke her neck poor thing and I cried for days because I felt sure it was my fault for being scared of her!
It was New Years day too, and Mum & Dad had us round for a turkey dinner ....oh dear
Yes, we love these little creatures, and they do make us cry at times ...still adore them though.

For now, we still have three Brussels Griffon's and they're enough for two old grandparents to handle. One is 14, one 12 and one is 2 and will run right over the top of your head when she gets the puppy crazies. She hurt her back last week and had to go on crate rest and pain meds. Lil kamikaze dog.
