Sorry for yet another newbie question, but I've noticed (at least with my Blu) that throat hit seems to be much weaker with the flavors (vanilla, mocha, cherry, even menthol) than with the classic tobacco flavor. I don't care for 'regular' tobacco (was a menthol smoker), but I find myself using it just for the throat hit.

Do the flavors have less throat hit as a rule, is this unique to Blu, or am I going crazy?

2 important factors of throat hit are PG content and nicotine strength. A 100% PG juice at say 24mg nicotine strength will have a much higher throat hit than say a 50%PG/50%VG juice at 6mg nic. A 100% VG fruit flavored juice will likely have little to no throat hit. Flavors can of course also be a contributing factor to throat hit. For example, if the juice is mixed with cinnamon flavoring, or certain alcohols, the throat hit can tend to be stronger.

There must be about 100 threads on this subject.

True throat hit is almost entirely a product of the nicotine level. Warmer vapor, from higher voltage model PV's will enhance the throat hit to a degree. Neither PG or VG provides any throat hit. But PG allows more of the throat hit to come through from the nicotine where as VG mutes the throat hit.

Additives such as PGA, vodka, pepper, cinn., etc do not create throat hit. Some additives like pepper will provide throat irritation but not the throat hit associated with nic level. If there was an additive that duplicated the throat hit from nicotine, almost everyone would be using it and it would be well known. Plain and simple, there isn't because it doesn't exist.

Juice Components
Flavoring usually 10%
PG enhances TH and lung hit- waterlike
VG= vapor and can mute flavor and TH , lung hit- very thick
Nicotine- provides TH and lung hit. The most important ingredient in regards to TH and LH.
Standards for the industry are 70/30 or 80/20 PG/VG.
An example of adjusting TH. I was Vaping 60/40 PG/ VG @ 8 mg but wasn't getting enough TH. Did not want to up my Nic level so I adjusted ratio to 70/30 PG/VG and am now once gain getting TH.
As Win posted some believe PGA, Pepper, distilled water, menthol provides TH. I and most others beiieve they are irritants. BUT in the evening when I vape a lower Nic I add menthol to make up for the lack in TH.

Okay after over 2 yrs of DIY and many arguments with friends over TH. I had them do a simple test to dispute the NiC=TH phenomenon...
Take 24mg/ml non flavored nic in PG 10ml will do because ur going to take 5 ml and cut it to 12 mg with straight PG
Test vape each sample. There will be very little difference with 24mg having a more pronounced TH.
Now take 24 mg VG non flavored 10ml will do bc we are going to cut it to 12mg with straight VG.
Test vape each sample. There will be even less of a difference than the pg....
There is a reason with any argument for nic why there is a hint more diff with PG explained in part 2 of the test...
With the remaining of the samples add your favorite flavoring... Choosing stronger flavors will add to the test outcomes:)
My fave is menthol (hint)
The PG's should come out with with similar results TH will be increased with flavor but not as much diff as believed...
The VG's should not have any effect at all...
The next part is to take 24mg nic VG and cut into ur remaining samples to make a 50/50 mix.. Do your math keep 12 mg and 24 mg samples just want them to be 50v/50p
Here is where you will notice a great difference in ur TH the 24 mg flavored 50p/50v will be pushing TH in amount much higher than their straight versions......

The effect is the carry of flavor (density in size of vapor molecules carrying flavor in PG) PG carries more flavor bcause it carries less water (the flavor is not as diluted) there is less vapor with PG.
A good PG VG mixture will allow a heavy carry of flavor and nicotine with volume (filling of lung tissue) of vapor attributing to lung expansion with the VG thick Vapor. It is a well balance of the 2 with a heavy flavor that makes great TH not nic alone ( although nic does add in a small way)... You can push TH ( or in my opinion chest hit CH) with abnormal amts of cinn or menthol... This is more irritation than actual TH. Added fyi I do not consider harsh burnt hits as TH as it is an irritant not a natural effect of the normal operating limits of ecigs...

A cool little test to do:)

Here's a better test. Take straight PG and straight VG and vape it. Many of us did this several years ago to test TH differences. End result (by all), no throat hit at all. Then we put some flavoring in. I did vanilla and carmel - end result, no throat hit. Then add nic at varing levels - throat hit increased as the nic went up. But it was more pronouced with the PG because the PG allows more of the TH from the nic to come through, similar to your analysis.

We also did straight PG and VG with menthol, cinn., PGA and pepper and we didn't get throat hit but we did get some throat irritation but it was nothing like the throat hit that comes from nicotine. It wasn't pleasant except the menthol wasn't as irritating as the other additives.

I will state it once more. If you could add something to eliquid that would duplicate the same throat hit you get from nicotine, it would be selling like hot cakes and almost everyone would be using it and we would all know about it.

So, not re: throat hit but following off the excellent post by SpringzVz, My getting "pure" VG or "reduced PG" is making my flavors more muted? I didn't know that.

I like how the VG feels thicker and smoother in the mouth and throat (or seems to) but I do notice that some flavors are really muted and I wonder why the company would sell it with that light a flavor.

Because some Vapers like the extra clouds of vapor whe some are sentive to PG and have to use a high VG or 100% VG. Although I've only be DIYing for 8 months I've been mixing/ supplying juices for about 80 people. I/we have tried all sorts of mixes and nothing replicates the TH that comes from Nic. I have 4 people that are on 100% VG and find I have add distlled water and extra flavoring- another reason why some vendors offer "extra or double" flavor juices.
P.S. Thank Gawd I no longer manually mix juice for friends/ converts A's a friend hooked me up with someone that owns a lab- it was getting a little overwhelming :)

I agree totally with this, and are basically the same as my findings, except I also thrown in VV into the equation.

I do also agree with your statement about the additive for TH. If it was out there we would know. As of now its all in the combination of different factors. Not one alone. You have to find that right "sweet spot" of the PG /VG balance and your own flavor that feels right:) A good 24 mg or better nic with a decent PG/VG ratio and a a dump of menthol is mine:) :vapor:
