From what I understand propylene glycol can cause dryness in the mouth. Perhaps more for some than others. If your mouth becomes consistently dry this can create an environment in the mouth where bacteria can become out of balance, therefore the likelihood of developing oral thrush is increased.
Therefore it's not so far fetched to deduce that vaping could be an indirect cause of oral thrush.

Apple cider vinegar swished around the mouth (diluted with water) can help, as well as drinking a teaspoon of vinegar before each meal (Balances the acidity in the body)
Acidophilus tablets taken daily help with yeast problems.
Vitamin B12 helps with sore mouth.
Keeping well hydrated is essential.
Cleaning mouthpieces and changing cartomisers regularly, as discussed.
Tumeric powder has anti inflammatory properties. Mix a little with honey and dissolve in warm milk to use as a mouth wash where inflammation is causing a problem.

adsm, I want to apologize for my post coming off so strong.
I to am relatively new to Vaping. Only 7 months. However in that short time I have seen so many people immediately blame Vaping for all kinds of health issues until I start thinking isn't right(with them)
Honestly, the proper place to be and ask for health help is at a qualified health provider, not a forum.
We are very diverse but few, if any, are qualified Doctors.
I personally am terrified that people asking the right questions in the wrong place will ultimately lend fuel to the FDA engine. At 60yrs old I have learned one thing from Vaping. I do not want to be forced back to smoking by anyone for any reason. 45yrs did enough damage.

Hope you can understand and forgive.

Try helping come up with a solution and not making a new member feel like an outcast. I got enough of that when I was smoking cigarettes... :(

I gotta side w/you here.

When people allow paranoia and defensiveness to cause them to treat others badly, that's time for a reality check.

Even if you were a "plant", which I don't think you are, IF vaping is relatively safe, then it doesn't need the kind of defending that goes on sometimes when posts like these crop up. We're supposed to be helping other vapers stay on the path, and if side effects show up for one of them, then it's just a problem solving adventure that we can help with.

As a longtime member here, with some credibility, I myself am struggling with 2 small health problems that I believe are related to vaping, and I am all for getting to the bottom of it. My doctor supports my vaping 100%, but agrees that there are a few things that will take some "sorting out" along this journey. He has no background in the effect of INHALED flavorings, PG or VG on my body, or anyone's body, for that matter. It's a process of eliimination and we have discussed what I might do to remain vaping.

If my problems cannot be solved, then i will have to quit vaping. As a matter of fact, I'm going to be using another form of NRT for 7 days to see if some of my problems resolve. If so, then it is MOST LIKELY either the flavorings, or the PG or VG in my e-liquid. Some people are NOT candidates for vaping, that goes without saying. I imagine there is a small % of people in this category, but they are by no means non-existent. :)

These are just problems to be solved, but they can't be solved if members can't talk about them intelligently and politely. .

but it's not caused by vaping... it's caused by using the wrong juice with cartos for way too long.

Putting ejuice into cartos IS vaping. Unless there is some other use for putting ejuice into cartos?

there is nothing about vaping that should cause thrush. Vaping doesn't cause fungus. If I were you, I would wash all of my equipment well, especially drip tips. If you let stuff get nasty or dirty, you could be introducing nasty little fungi into your mouth.

You seemingly are not familiar with exactly what thrush is. Anything can disrupt the normal flora and fauna in a person's body and can result in yeast type infections. this is also what causes yeast infections (the female kind) and other Candida infections, like leaky gut syndrome, in the intestinal track, are often caused by imbalances, and those are chemical in nature, either from food, alcohol, too much acidity in the system (which is why citrus can often bring on an episode.) Many small infants get thrush because their immune systems are not built up yet. Diaper rash is actually a cousin of candida. Some people get thrush from antibiotics (precisely because it adjusts the bacteria that keeps our flora and fauna balanced), but some people get them who are highly sugar or carb sensitive. I know many people who have had to completely give up sugar and carbs in order to not get candida / yeast infections.

Therefore, vaping VG, PG, and flavorings, in the right individual, are all certainly suspects that need to be looked into and experimented with. Every individual who begins vaping is introducing certain things into their system which they may not have had a lot of exposure to before.

the best thing we can do for new vapers experiencing problems is to use a process of elimination to help them get to the bottom of it.

crxess, while I can certainly empathize with your fearfulness, I don't think it is a healthy course.

There is NO downside to a better understanding of things, no downside to intelligent intquiry. This is the only way we learn. And sharing is also important because it puts us on the learning path.

Agreed. It was an illogical conclusion to make unless he can connect the dots for us. The state of being a healthy person doesn't forbid you from getting an infection. The fact that it occurred after starting to vape doesn't mean it was caused by vaping. Many times, all manner of things can seem reasonable to all of us but if it has no due process than it cannot be treated as fact. One can have beliefs that are not facts but that distinction should be made.

That being said, you should ask your doctor if you may continue to vape until you are well. Your exposure is to propylene glycol, nicotine, and glycerin. The act of vaping may dry your throat out a bit. If you are clear on those issues then you should be OK.

In the general forum there's some talk of an antibiotic and propylene glycol making a toxic combo. I'd make double sure your antibiotic is safe with it.

Good lord people- the OP didn't have any other change in her life other than the vaping, and a week later she had thrush! Anyone in that situation would have concluded it was a result of the vaping. She's stated she likes vaping and would like to continue.

A quick Google of "thrush from vaping" and I got a lot of hits. I am not a medical professional, but I did take a philosophy class. If it's not from the vaping, and we still haven't had a medical doctor say that it isn't possible, it's a simple case of Post hoc ergo propter hoc, concluding one event was caused by another simply because it followed it. I sense no malice on the OPs part if it is simply a coincidence. And if it's from any of the problems that can come from vaping, like the dehydration, then in a sense the vaping did cause the thrush. She is on here, a positive forum for vapors, looking for answers, not shouting from the rooftops that vaping is bad for you. The human mouth is a walking chemistry experiment and something upset the balance.

I am very new to this forum and am kind of surprised at a portion of this thread. I hope this is not indicative of any negative feedback for vaping.

Whether or not it's possible does not justify it as a fact. It's possible I'll get in a car accident tomorrow but I'm not going to treat it as fact.

The OP made a natural mistake with correlation and causation. It happens all the time and it can seem very reasonable even when it isn't.

To make such a claim should require a degree of integrity in argument as to have points of discussion that lead you to a conclusion.

An example, Wearing knee high socks with shorts may very well cause chaffed thighs but without a proper explanation it is absurd.

Has a proper explanation been offered for the original conclusion? An argument.

Now if only people were so quick to pass judgment on analogs after their first bout of bronchitis!

@op- The PG in vapor form has been proven to be a potent antimicrobial. The potential exists for you to have already had a mild case of thrush kept in check by good bacteria that was then killed off by vaping. Eat yogurt to replenish that good bacteria, plus yogurt is tasty!

Well anyway. I found a link between vaping and thrush. It took me about three minutes.

Vaping can lead to dry mouth and dry mouth can lead to thrush. I'll do more research on the subject tomorrow.

For me personally, I chain vape, and often have dry mouth. I treat it with biotene products, lots of sugar free liquids like tea, and occasionally if it's bad I'll rub ground ginger in my mouth. It causes me to drool like a dog.

Its important to keep well hydrated and fight dry mouth as its the only side effect I've noticed but it can have a diverse group of effects.

How does your mouth get dry if you're drooling?

PG does cause dehydration, VG to a much lesser extent. I never really had the problem until I started vaping a Genesis at 10+watts.

Llama,
You and I are saying the exact same thing in regards to the potential fallacy of the OP's post. Post hoc ergo propter hoc is the most common argumental fallacy, and it is easy to see why it happened in this case. I just don't think she deserves to be attacked for it. I don't think there is she is the detriment to vaping that others have claimed. Suggestions to overcome her thrush so she can try suggestions like different mixes to see if that changes things is what she was looking for.

I don't know why I'm so surprised to see so many people reply without having read the entire conversation... it happens in every forum I've ever been a part of.

It just bothers me to see so many people reply, bashing the OP, having obviously not read the entire conversation and seeing the back and forth between the OP and the people who replied early in this conversation.

I don't even know why I post this now other than to get that off my chest... after all, none of those people are going to read this either ;)

adsm, I hope your condition clears up quickly and you are able to continue to enjoy vaping.

Trying to find a solution, not be bashed. Try searching fungal infection an ecigarette online. Lots of others have this issue.

I'm not bashing here, please hear me out. I've also got some suggestions for your problem- see the last paragraph.

When you look at the first page of hits from doing the exact search that you suggest, almost all of them are not drawing any corelation between thrush and vaping. I found inocuous vaping articles that were on the same page as an advert for a candida cure for example. The statement you made in the first post "From what I can find online, this happens often from vaping... " is incorrect and extremely misleading. If you'd run everything though the "just because it's on the internet doesn't make it right" filter and not made that one statement we could have saved ourselves a lot of controversy. Vaping is under threat worldwide, and this community is very keen that things don't get harder still - you hit a very tender nerve. You might take your right to vape for granted now, but that right may not always be yours. For example, in my country I can NOT go to a store and buy any vaping products with nicotine in them - not juice, not cartridges, not even a disposable e-cig. Please keep this in mind as it's a very important matter for all of us ex-smokers that rely on vaping to maintain our healthier lifestyle.

Enough of the sermonising...

I suspect that your problems may have started with a dry and irritated throat. This _can_ be a side affect of vaping and you need to deal with it immediately when it happens by drinking water. The people who have the most problem with this are likely to be those who are not used to drinking a lot of water daily. When the throat gets very dry and sore it can leave the tissues open to other infections caused by both opportune bad bacteria and fungus. This problem can be made much worst by incorrect use of your PV. Running the cartridges or wicking system dry will cause a very dry hit ("dry hit" is the exact term we use to refer to it). This is a very acrid tasting vapor that instantly irritates the throat and can cause a persistent sore throat, ultimately leading to the types of problems you are experiencing. There are two main causes of dry hits: running are cartridge quite dry, and vaping quicker than the wicking system can bring e-liquid onto the coil. My suggestions are to try the following: try drinking water immediately after using your PV, change or refill the cartridges as soon as you notice the flavour going off, and vape slower and less frequently until you know the limits of the sytem you are using. The most problematic systems for chain vaping running the coil dry are cartridges used on their own and wicked tank systems. The best system that will keep up with the chain vaper is a properly set up tank cartomiser (a cartridge inserted into a tank of liquid) however this is a more advanced system that is not really suitable for the begginer unless you have to the time to do some research and don't mind a more hands-on experience. I do hope that you manage to resolve your problems and make the successful switch from tobacco to vaping.

Racehorse, I am definitely aware of what thrush is. I have heard of it and experienced it. I am also aware of the diaper rash connection, although most diaper rash in my experience is just irritation, but if the baby has one that won't go away with normal treatment, yeast can be the culprit for sure. In the same post you quoted, I also pointed out that sugar can cause yeast infections, and suggested the OP check into the sweeteners used in his/her juices. I don't really know how it could cause that since you aren't ingesting it, but there are a lot of things I don't know, and I think it's worth looking into. If you look through the thread, I think there is actually plenty of helpful information. Many people are trying to help. I still think the best thing would be quitting until the issue is resolved. If I had thrush in my mouth that I thought was from vaping, I would quit right away. As much as I love vaping, I hate thrush even more.

People are touchy when someone says vaping definitely caused blah blah blah, because people tend to post things like this a lot. But quitting smoking is hard on the body for many people. Any shocking change to the system can cause problems. When I started vaping I had a few health issues, but I'm still vaping ten months later and have not had any of those issues after the first month. It would have been easy for me to say vaping caused those things, and even found a couple of posts of people saying the same thing, but it turned out not to be the case.

I think what Satava said has made the most sense to me. PG being antibacterial could kill off good bacteria, leaving the candida to take over. Just like what happens if you take antibiotics. Definitely worth looking into with your doc, OP.

Hopefully now that you are taking antifungals, you can get the issue under control. If you want to keep vaping, try some of these suggestions, and good luck!

Perhaps one forgotten thing is that when we quit smoking, our bodies change quite dramatically. Vaping doesn't cause spots, for example, but quitting smoking does give rise to 'quit zits'. They say when you quit smoking, your gums bleed so maybe thrush was a result of the same thing; not necessarily vaping but quitting smoking?

Some people are prone to fungal infections anyway. I knew one girl who was prone to it, who could only describe it as a mouth infection. She was repeatedly poo-poo'd by medical professionals until they were eventually able to communicate between them that it was thrush and she didn't need antibiotics. She also had to reduce her sugar intake for a while.

If it keeps returning while your vaping (and you're systematically exploring other avenues like reducing your sugar, not taking antibiotics etc), then we may be able to infer a plausible correlation- if a very, very rare one. My immediate thought was the sweeteners though...have you tried flavour free?

In the meantime, don't fret too much. Sure, thrush is god-awful but cancer is a lot worse! Keep an eye on your diet, try different juices, keep your equipment clean and maybe keep a record?x

After a week of vaping, I got a really sore throat and felt as though I hada lump in my throat. Got so bad I went to the dr. Turns out that I have a really bad case of thrush ( a fungal infection) in my mouth and throat. I have never had this before and I am healthy. It's definitely from vaping... I'm so disappointed. I was really excited to be smoke free. Now I don't know what to do. I have a prescription to clear up the infection but am not sure if it will keep coming back if I continue to vape :( anyone else experience the same. From what I can find online, this happens often from vaping... Advice?

I've came back to this thread as it keeps popping up in "My Posts." I've quoted the OP as a reminder. I think letting him off the hook on his approach, as a noob poster, does him a disservice. This is, after all, as much as social group as it is a support one. We're only human here. With only 8 posts, it is very, very, clear why some suspected a troll or at least an ANTZ mindset and a setup thread. What is a member to do... continue offering compassion and genuine help while an attempt is being made to make fools of same or, worse, use their words in a nefarious way? I think many here have tried, in their way, to help and I'm sad to see some members chastising them instead of pointing out the error of the OP's ways. As I said, he learns nothing from that. The OP has been silent while any reasonable person would understand they jumped in with a totally wrong approach and take responsibility for that.... apologize... for what: "Its definitely from vaping" "this happens often from vaping" "Advice?" Considering... I think the members have done an excellent job from which the OP has benefited.

PS: there is no sugar nor any other caloric food substance in ejuice... "sweet" does not equal sugar.

This is exactly why I was very careful with my posts... I was careful to say things like...

"But that doesn't mean there is a Causal relationship with vaping"

because stating that "that doesn't mean that 'V' causes 'T' " will just make this thread show up in more google searches...

I'm closing this thread because the rudeness to a new member is staggering. There are forums that allow, even encourage this but ECF is not one of them. We encourage members to ask questions, and no question is a stupid question.

I apologize to the new member, and please do as salemgold suggested and post in the Health, Safety and E-Smoking Forum.
