Its magic. For starters, a resistor is placed between Vout and Vadj. That pushes it down a bit. Then a diode is placed after Vout. The combination of those two things, depending on what resistors you use, can actually get the voltage out as low as 3.7v.

Once you get to the modders forum, there is a wealth of info. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

A resister between Vout and the adjust pin? Ok, Im assuming you're running without a set resister right, running the adj pin OPEN, for the smallest Vout - 5V. So, instead of using a resister twis adj-gnd, youre putting one between adj-Vout?? Is that correct?

There is a resistor between Vout and Vadj, AND a resistor and POT between Vadj and Ground. All the homework is there in the modders forum.
