There is still money in music? I mean outside the preformed bubble gum autotune pop that infects our ears. Thought iTunes and music streaming put an end to any kind of profit a band (or musician) can make.

Used to be you could earn a living off of sales and throw in a tour to boost them. Now you stream to boost ticket sales for your tours. Unless you’re Taylor Swift, you make your money on the road, which kinda sucks unless you really love touring.

There's a market for old bands to play classic rock. You'd be surprised how much work is available in class reunions and various other venues for old rockers.

I haven't played much in the last few years. Truth is, when I think about being out until 3 and 4 in the morning it's a different environment than when I was in my 20's and 30's. Being retired from a 36 year career in my day job I don't have the desire, the need, or the energy to do it again.

The drummer from my old band is still playing drums and managing his current band. He's called me a couple of times lately when he was auditioning replacement players, wanting me to sit in and play guitar as he auditions singers. That's fun. I get to play in the band here and there for rehearsal and auditions for new members and I get to go home about 9pm! He has had some turnover in musicians lately.

They play out of town frequently. Sometimes, that means you get home a couple of hours before the sun comes up.

Joe Rogan interviews a few musicians on his pod cast – all speak about the how the industry has changed. Record sales use to be split between artist and label, with tours and merchandise going straight into the artist pocket. Not anymore. Every Daniel Ek, Tim Cook and Chad Hurley (Spotify, iTunes, YouTube) has their hands in the pie now, taking what they want, leaving the artist with little.

And ticket sales can be astronomical..

A few years ago I considered going to see Trans Siberian Orchestra since they were playing close enough I figured I could attend..

For halfway decent seating at the venue tickets were running around a thousand a seat.

I'm sure going to the rock fest is cheaper and you dont have to worry about seating but I about choked on the pricing of that concert as good seating was running up to 5 grand a seat if I recall correctly..

But your right, the money is in the physical concerts now - and they realize it.

But does it pay what it use to? Guess if you can avoid the many middlemen involved you can make a little more on the profit – but that is a lot of hard work with no real guarantees.

Check out the documentary on Anvil if you haven’t already. Not a huge band, but one that was popular with the 1980’s rise of heavy metal – and a big influence on the scene back then. Documentary is well done, and actually quite sad.

A lot of these guys do not know anything else – it is music or bust.

Not the orginal but since we're linking videos:

Text(In spoiler due long):

[Verse 1]
You've got the words to change a nation but you're biting your tongue
You've spent a lifetime stuck in silence afraid you'll say something wrong
If no one ever hears it
How we gonna learn your song?
So come on, come on
Come on, come on

[Verse 2]
You've got a heart as loud as lions, so why let your voice be tamed?
Maybe we're a little different, there's no need to be ashamed
You've got the light to fight the shadows so stop hiding it away
Come on, come on

[Chorus]
I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'till the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers, I'm not afraid
They can read all about it, read all about it
Oh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, oh, oh

[Verse 3]
At night we're waking up the neighbours while we sing away the blues
Making sure that we're remembered, yeah, 'cause we all matter too
If the truth has been forbidden, then we're breaking all the rules
So come on, come on
Come on, come on

[Verse 4]
Let's get the TV and the radio to play our tune again
It's 'bout time we got some airplay of our version of events
There's no need to be afraid, I will sing with you, my friend
Come on, come on

[Chorus]
I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream till the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers, I'm not afraid
They can read all about it, read all about it

[Bridge]
Yeah we're all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
Now we're finally finding our voices
So take a chance, come help me sing this
Yeah we're all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
Now we're finally finding our voices
So take a chance, come help me sing this

[Chorus]
I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream till the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers, I'm not afraid
They can read all about it, read all about it
Oh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, oh, oh
I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream till the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers, I'm not afraid
They can read all about it, read all about it
Oh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, ohhh, oh
Ohhh, oh, oh

Incase you didn't bother with the pressing the spoiler button, here's first verse to pique your interest.

I linked this clip in particular because i think she's very talented. Many of you may have probably heard it, but still doesn't hurt to link it. Thought it would fit in here. :)
