It's difficult to accurately predict the optimum nicotine level when transitioning from smoking to vaping. Most information is anecdotal. For example, I was an Ultra Lite smoker (15 analogs/day). I am comfortable at 11-12mg (usually labeled "Medium," sometimes "Low").

You probably know the milligram strength of that "light e liquid," but not of those "high nic carts." Why don't you take a few puffs of a high-nicotine cart and see ... and also fill a blank cart with the light e-liquid and try that. And go from there.

As for how to inhale, it is different. The following is lifted from Part 3 of my 510 Illustrated Guide:

Now the big moment! You stick it in your mouth and puff. Nothing happens.:( Oh, that’s right! I forgot to press the button. So you do it again, pressing the button while you inhale. Oh, I felt something there, but not much. And where’s this vapor everybody talks about?

The problem is not with your new 510; it’s with your drag technique. You’re attempting to do it the same way as you have smoked an analog cigarette: a short, sharp puff directly into your lungs. But an e-cig, although similar in some ways, is not an analog (it’s better, but different). So some brief instruction is in order…

Using his penstyle e-cig (with an automatic battery), joshuajamerson explains and demonstrates what you did wrong and contrasts that with the more effective way to do it:
[NOTE: Since you have a 510 manual battery, you don’t have to worry about that “fine line” he mentions. You just press the button and drag as long as you want.]

If you like, you can do this using a British accent, as demonstrated by igetcha:
[That second “primer puff” technique is not applicable to the 510 with its manual button. Just press the button and do what igetcha does with his first “long controlled drag” technique.]

One aspect of puffing on an e-cig that neither of them mentions is the two-phase inhale that most of us use. That long leisurely drag is not directly into your lungs (as with an analog), but into your mouth … and then inhale into your lungs.

Why don’t you give it a try?

That was much better, wasn’t it? Lots of vapor and you really felt it. Oh, you want to go right back and do it again, huh? OK! Have at it … and start evolving your own puffing/inhaling style!

Hope this helps!
