For comparison purposes, when talking about cameras, weapons, helicopters, golf, gadgets (pretty much all my hobbies), sure I can probably enter in and get by with the base entry-level model. However, I will most likely outgrow that entry-level model and want to be a bit more selective in the options I apply to that model. Cameras, sure a point and shoot will work most of the time. But, a DSLR is so much better. Guns? A CZ might be able to put rounds down range or a .22 might be great for learning on, but a Kimber or a .45 will more adequately do the job and be more accurate in the process. Sure, I can go flying with a model I buy from some Chinese distributor thats a knock off of another brand. But, once I get pretty good flying helicopters, I'm going to want a model that I can adjust and do more with. I can go out and buy a set of golf clubs at Wal-Mart for super cheap and go hit some golf balls, but once I start getting good, I'll probably want custom shafts and particular heads. However, not everyone is me and they are content with a point and shoot camera, a .22 CZ, a Walkera helicopter, a set of Pinemeadow clubs, etc. Nothing wrong with that.
Now, with that being said, not everyone needs a DSLR for just taking family snapshots. Not everyone needs a tournament level weapon or enough firepower to knock down a zombie on PCP. Not everyone needs a helicopter with more options for configurations and adjustability to just hover/fly basic circuits. Not everyone needs Pings or TaylorMades, etc to just go to the range or play the rare round of golf. In my case, I typically get pretty good at whatever I put my mind to and outgrow anything basic or entry-level pretty quickly, but that's me and YMMV.
