I bought a container of general white portion snus, which the local tobacco store here carries in a little refrigerator display case.

I liked the taste, the sort of saltiness, but I get a stinging burning feeling on my gums. Not a good one, either...I tried letting it stay there thinking I would get used to it, but after a little while it was actually painful and I had to take it out.

This also happened with the Camel snus but the burn was far less and it went away much more quickly. Those were "frost" flavored though, so who knows what they put in there, and I wasn't really crazy about the taste anyway.

Is that burn common with all snus that aren't covered up with heavy flavoring, or is it just common with general white portion, or it's not common at all?

Not that uncommon from what I have heard. A big part of it is your gums getting used to the salt. The portion materiel can also be a bit irritating until you get used to it. The gums need to toughen up a bit. One thing you can do at first is move it around. I leave mine in one place but I know there are many experienced users who frequently move the portion around.

Just a little story, the first snus I used was camel frost. It burned my gum so bad I had a blister on it. Took a few days to heal. No major problems after that but even now, after nearly 11 months of snus use, I can still get a bit of irritation with some of the rougher portion materials. Hang in there a bit and it should get better in short order. As for the flavorings, the worst as far a burn goes are the mint/wintergreen/frost type snus, but it can happen with any of them for a beginner.

Yeah, the minty ones always burn at first, but with continued use, that goes away. I think the salt in the regular portions plays a big part in irritation in the beginning, which goes away, too. I have to say the white portions are the most uncomfy for me too. Long past the irritation stage, they just don't sit as comfortable against my gum as the wet portions do.

    Somewhere between here and there
I may be wrong but perhaps it has a little something to do with that it is a white(dry) portion. When I first started, I would wet the white portions with water before putting them in. I don't really ever remember my gum being sore. I also always put my portions as far to the rear as I can.

The first snus I got was the sample can of General White Portion and although it took a bit to get used to it, I never really got that terrible burning sensation. I can say the same for the General White Portion Wintergreen!!

Wow, purchase a can from the tobacco shop (in the cute little refrig) and though I picked up the General White; Put one in and OMG, was that strong!! Then noticed it was the Wintergreen (very hard to see the difference in that dark store).

I did find if I left it out for 30 minutes before using, it toned down a bit. I'm getting used to it, but still prefer the General White and ordered 20 cans online.

((Now if Halo will get the Freedom juice back in stock, I'll be one happy camper))
