well tonight I finished converting the oven over to programable electronic control and configured it to the PC and calibrated it, I'm just about done with this and it works really nice, now I just need to fine tune the PID control loop and program in the annealing cycles and I'm back in business :p

I was originally planning on making a whole new replacement control panel with a light up power switch and indicators and stuff but once I started working on it I decided to just keep the stock control panel so I can retain the analog adjustable mechanical safety shutoff, I kept the stock on/off switch and coil amp meter for now since they're already fitted to the panel and work fine with the electronic control so I winded up just replacing the analog main control with the microprocessor control and it don't look too hacked up :)

the original safety shutoff override option turned out to be worth keeping, it's a completely mechanical system, independent of all the electronics. it uses it's own bulb type temperature sensor and has a dial that I can set to any exact temperature threshold trigger point, once breached it trips the breaker and shuts all power down. I kinda like having the independent mechanical safety shutoff since this thing will at times run for 24 hours a day unattended. I'll sleep better at night knowing any kind of failure will just cause it to shut down rather than risking a thermal runaway from a stuck relay or something.

here's what i looks like. I put the ethernet port on the side to be able to run the PC cable from behind but I need to get a longer cable, so for testing I had to just run the cable right across the front to reach all the way to the pc on the other side of the room

I ran it up to 550 degrees for testing but I'll only need to reach ~400 for annealing ultem. this oven is capable of reaching temperature much faster than required for annealing, so it'll work really well with controlled ramp up cycles

here's a shot of the data logging screen. it's much easier to program everything with the pc, including all the annealing cycle parameters, than having to do it right through the control panel buttons and cryptic on board menu system :)

ha, just because the course was from MIT does NOT mean I'm claiming to be any kind of MIT brainiac type dude or anything, not by a long shot... it's not like they test or approve who gets to watch there on line video's or anything, anyone can watch them, even if you wind up with that "deer in the headlights" look on your face while watching

Were you heat treating metals before?

nope, I've always wanted to build a furnace or kiln and do stuff with metal but never did... I may eventually build a tiny one to work with small stuff like casting my own silver contacts and stuff

Thanks for your concerns have been fighting this since my early 20's then at 35 2 discs herniated and had surgery felt good for a few then things started going south again so they decided on the let's k him so high he doesn't feel anything and that led to nothing but more pain. So my family Dr put me in pt which really helped till I lost feeling in my leg again the other day, so into the mri I went yesterday and as expected 2 more basically exploded and who knows what damage has been done now, As my grandmother always put it if you break due to a small Crack then you were already weak before the Crack the strong repair and more forward to better things in life. I prefer the latter. Sorry for the rant hope to be back better than ever.

Hi everyone. New to the thread here. Have to say, I love your mods Turbo, amazing works of art. I was gonna copy/paste list and get on there. I'm not sure how that works exactly. Are you still doing the stabilized wood dna75 or are you strictly doing the ultems now? Right now want the stabilized wood dna75. Would love an ultem too, later..... PM me if needed. Really really want a chance to get one of these beautiful mods. Wondering about wait-time. I know I'm a lil late here....
