Me and me pal were just talking about this! So you can get a 2 pounds or something off the purchase of a brand new mac!! Or after buying beer for a year you can put the money saved towards half a pint of beer to celebrate yayy! Now if only they would take away VAT at christmas, make tellys and cars and other expensive items like £2.50 and a loaf of bread £100 so the cheap stuff is expensive and the expensive stuff cheap! Just for December, of course :)

Unless my sums are letting me down you'd get £25 of a £1000 Mac, or 25p of a 15ml juice. Every little helps...

You scr*wed with the beer, they are putting duty up on booze, fags and pertrol to cancel out the VAT cut

You just watch how the websites and sellers of over the UK do a sneaky one and put all there prices up by 2.5% then take 2.5% off to make it look like you got a discount !

the same thing happened when all the EURO Countries changed over from there currency to Euros they all added a little extra to the price of everything !!

Look at the interst rate cut what a load of Balls ,all that media hype for nothing !

only the banks have got richer and only a handfull have passed it on !

Sly but unfortuanately the Way Of The World !

Such a cynic:)

I think some retailers might try (and I am not talking about our e-cig people!) but I think in the present climate they might just get flayed alive if caught. We shall see..

Sadly I'm old enough to remember decimalisation, there were many mega ripoffs then

Pete or San ...

Do you guys mind explaining to me what VAT tax is and what its applied to? Here in the states we have Sales/Use Tax, tobacco and Alcohol Tax, etc....

Would just like to educated myself really :)

In effect to the consumer it's a sales tax, but from the retailers/manufacturers side it's much more complex.

VAT is charged at every transaction so if a manufacturer buys raw materials his is charged VAT. When he makes his product he sells it to the wholesaler and the manufacturer charges the wholesaler VAT. The manufacturer claims back the original VAT the paid on the raw materials. You may guess the next bit, the wholesaler sells to the retailer, charging him VAT and gets back the VAT he paid to the manufacturer. The retailer sells to the customer, the retailer gets his VAT back, but Joe Public doesn't

Simple isn't it??

Thanks guys !!!! I'm even more confused than when I asked!!! haha ... Luckily our tax structure *for now* doesn't seem to be as complicated ...

VAT was the main reason I gave up my business and went back to employment. The complexity of it is unbelievable, if your a one person business you either try and do it yourself and drown under the paperwork or pay an accountant a fortune to do it for you.

lets not forget the 30% increase in purchase cost for the suppliers thats happened over the last three months..

two dollars to the pound is now 1.5 dollars to the pound.. buying from china has suffered a 30% inflation rate over three f-cking months..

2.5% off vat aint worth a **** to be honest it certainly wont cover the increased buying in costs for UK resellers..

i would guess that allowing for the massive return rate on these things UK resselers are struggling to make anything..

lets have both side of the argument.. massive cost increases for UK resellers against 2.5% less vat.. hmmm..

a saving of 2.128% for the customer. So 99p item is going to cost 97p. It make a difference to the overall economy but the first thing its going to do is it will cost retailers a fortune in changing lots of prices and adapting accounting systems. After all the hype customers are going to demand that the 99p item is now 97p. For those retailers buying from abroad that will disapear overnight if the pound drops again.

99 is really a pound that sounds less.. that wont go away.. 4.99 9.99.. 49.99

but everything that comes in from china has gone up massively.. what used to cost 300 quid now costs 400 quid.. it hits us as it happens.. stuff that comes in by bulk shipping will take longer to filter thru as higher prices in the shops.. but it will.. and we (the whole economy) do buy tons of stuff from china..

i watch the pound dollar rate every bloody day.. its kinda hovering around 1.5 but bad news could set it off downwards again..

VAT works like this! Everything you buy the government takes off VAT. The VAT is for the heating for the houses of parlament and other government buildings.

The government look on the CCTV cameras and notice there aren't many people buying stuff but how would they heat the houses of parlament without money!? Aha! They get a loan so they can lower VAT to trick the people into thinking they get a good deal to get them buying so the government get more VAT. That way they can keep the wood burning stove going and put VAT wayy up high afterwards so they can pay off the loan and keep buying logs to keep warm! BUT then they put up other taxes aswell!

Those taxes are for the prime ministers secret rocket ship. All the government can fit inside it. It features In Flight movies and cocktails, tethered everlasting ecigs and an anti gravity system to eliminate space sickness! The taxes go up, the government escapes to Mars in the rocket ship and the world explodes and that ladies and gentlemen is how VAT works simple eh!
