2 weeks now and I'm eating much more, getting some exercise and already feeling much better about life.

Withdrawal symptons are almost completely gone apart from the occasional bit of anxiety and trouble sleeping, did have the feeling like bugs were crawling up my skin last night but kept calm and it passed quickly.

Thanks for the support to everyone who has replied, I didn't expect this thread to go on so long, I guess it is a topic that probably doesn't come up on a vaping forum too often. Hopefully reading some of the stories in this thread will prevent some others from ending up in this position in the first place. I had no idea alcohol withdrawal could actually be so terrible and even life threatening until I decided I wanted to stop drinking.

It took 25 years of drinking for me. I wasn't a social drinker. I was the drinker that had to drink til I passed out. At the end of my drinking career, my tolerance had reversed. Alcohol became a stimulant. So the answer to your question is, I abused the hell out of it.

Thanks, It's great to feel alive again :)

Pretty much the same for me, except I am only 28. It started out social when I was 16 but for about 5 or 6 years I have been drinking on my own and every day. A 6 pack of beer a day turned into 6-10 beers plus up to or even over a bottle of whisky a day. The Doctor was quite suprised that I managed to damage my liver so badly and become so dependent by a young age.

My brother always told me to get help. I never listened to anyone. It took me to lose everything I had, including my lovely family.

I think I got out just in time, I have lost a lot but thankfully I had my family to support me through this and to further support me to stay sober.

I'm trying to avoid a liver biopsy for fatty liver lately, and my doctor allows this supplement. Works well- read the reviews.

    ( friend o' Bill's since '82, welcome )

Amazon.com: Jarrow Formulas Milk Thistle Standardized Silymarin Extract 30:1 Ratio, 150 mg per Capsule, 200 Gelatin Capsules: Health & Personal Care

Sounds good, next time I see the doctor I might see if they can recommend something similar I can get locally.

Any place that sells supplements will carry milk thistle. You want to get at least 200mg., standardized to 80% silymarin, usually taken 2 to 3 times a day.

Hang in there, those first few days are a doozy. Alcohol withdraw is no little thing, be sure to consult your doc's and stay in touch with them. Withdraw can cause a stroke in severe cases. HANG IN THERE you can do it. Hydrate and know the anxiety will fade, never fast enough, but it will fade.

    Hey J_B_86.

Vaping is the last thing you need to worry about while detoxing off booze. I really can't see how it would affect your liver.

I've been through the booze detox routine more times than I care to admit, and every time I've smoked my head off and used everything I can to help chill my nerves...including things like valerian root and sculcap, both of which are known to harm your liver.

Just stay off the booze, and get yourself to a meeting. Keep yourself fed and well hydrated.

    It gets better. :)

    edit: Also a friend of Bill's since 2007 :)

    Hey!
I am trying to quit drinking as well, and still, I guess, stuck in the tapering down stage (Down to once a week! Hurray!), and I'm at the point of just wanting to drop it cold turkey.

I don't think vaping should really have any effect on the liver (maybe an effect on the lungs though...), but I'm not a doctor.

Just wanted to say though: GOOD JOB! ^_^
It's hard work trying to kick the booze, and if vaping helps you quit, then I would say vape away!

Keep up the good work! You can do this!

The benzodiazepines you were prescribed are o.k. for stopping seizures and hand tremors during the acute detox phase, but I hope they are doing a titration off of those at some point in the very near future. Those are nasty medications, and on par with your alcohol issues. Vaping is the least of your concerns for a long time into your future. Hope you get clean and sober. I ran medical depts for drug and alcohol treatment for many years. I have 25 years sober. I always say I ran out of bright ideas and had all the fun I could stand. It will be o.k.:)

They had me heavy on the benzodiazepines for the first 5 days, gradually gave me less for about 3-4 days after that, one tablet the last day and then nothing. I had to attend a clinic daily where they checked me out (blood pressure, withdrawal symptom severity charts and breathalyser test of course). I had thiamine injections the first 3 days and a full blood examination the first day. They only gave me as many tablets as I needed for the day each day to avoid taking too many.

5 weeks sober today, feeling much healthier and much happier, getting plenty of exercise and eating well. :)

Still seeing a counsellor once a week but not sure I need it. I genuinely do not want to drink ever again and have not felt the slightest urge or craving to in the last 2 weeks or so. I will see it out till they say I'm completely over it though. Its all about relapse prevention now.

Good to hear. I am very happy to hear that. You have a chronic terminal illness that will tell you it wasn't that bad. There is a story about a man whistling in the dark in the AA big book that fits your current description. You may not think this is necessary, but this would be a good idea.

The banana that gets away from the bunch gets peeled. Congratulations once again on your sobriety!

So True!! Detox and a few weekly meetings surely aren't enough. Make it fun tho!! Join AA, meet some new friends. I was an introvert when I joined but meeting people you have something in common with makes it easy to make friends.

I had great friends and attended many meetings weekly and it formed a solid base for my sobriety ever since.
