I have been trying to research this all week with the blizzard leaving me stuck at home with not much better to do. I understand that the ego-k is a 510 battery. I do not know what options I have otherwise, single coil, double coil, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, etc.. I don't even know what that means.

I'm on a roll, so someone better correct me if I'm mistaken!

Most ego style batteries are 510 threaded, as are most APVs these days. The Ego-K just appears to be a big capacity ego battery (1100mah) with fancy designs. K stands for King (as in big size) by the look of it.

What carto resistance you should use depends a lot on what Volts your battery is putting out. 3.3, 3.7 or VV depending on what battery you choose. If you get VV like the Ego Twist or Vision Spinner, you can use a wider range of resistance.

Double coil seems to be a way to get around that limitation on non VV devices to produce better results from a 3 ohm coil by using 2 of them to give effectively half that resistance. Will burn out quicker and use more battery life though.

Ok, that helped. How do I know what volts my ego-k is putting out? I'm looking for a carto, mostly because they're more rugged and I drop it, that holds more juice than the standard cheap ones, and doesn't make it taste funny.
Anyone want to tell me which of these I can use?

Thanks!

Depends who makes it. If it is a Joyetech original, it will be 3.3v, whereas the non VV Smoktech, kGo and Riva batteries are 3.7v. Of course if you get VV, you can select the voltage yourself.

The Ego-K looks non VV and non Joyetech, so 3.7v probably.

Any 510 threaded carto would work. I'd go for single coil and get some cartos at 2.3ish (around 6 watts, good for battery life and carto longevity) and some at 1.7 or 1.8ish (around 8 watts, battery will run out of charge a little quicker and carto may not last as long before the atty burns, but balance that against potential loveliness). And then choose which works best for you.

If you go lower ohms than that, you may burn out cartos much quicker. And get a lovely burnt taste to boot. Any higher than that and you'll have a less satisfying vape experience as there is not enough power to vaporize the liquid enough. That's why VV rocks. You adjust the charge to the resistance, not the resistance to the charge.

My usual disclaimer is that I stand to be corrected by those far more knowledgable than me.

Wow, finally understanding!
So, what's the deal with the cartos with the holes that have the, like lip thing at the bottom? How do you know if you can, or should use the kind with the holes? What do the holes do?

Those are cartos designed to be used in a tank. The ones without holes are used on their own, or you can punch your own holes and use them in a tank anyway. The holes bring juice into the carto filler to replace the juice you just vaped. The lip is a flange that sits under the tank that stops it sliding down too far on the carto.

The benefits of a cartotank system are...
Less refills as the tank holds more juice than the carto can alone.
Cartos last longer as if the setup is working fine then the carto stays fully moist and so the filler does not get burnt.
You can get really cool custom tanks.

Cons
Bigger setup than just the carto
A small learning curve

See Baditude's blog again for more details.

Undestanding resistances, LR and HV

I just found this, which describes a lot of stuff, but I will have to read it several times to really absorb it. I don't do well with numbers, lol.

That chart (or a slight variant) is exactly what I use. That way you don't have to worry about the numbers. You just need to know your volts and check out the resistances that may work (i.e won't be so rubbish as to not bother and won't burn your carto out real fast). Using colors!

Easy way to think about it is that volts mean how much heat you are making. Ohms are how resistant the coil is to heat. You don't want more heat than the coil can handle and you don't want less heat than the coil needs.

Heh, I suppose it is like lighting a cig with an ember or a blowtorch. A zippo, bik or match are in the correct 'voltage range' for the cig end's resistance.

Match 600 - 800 degrees C / 1,100 - 1,500 degrees F
Butane torch 1970 °C / 3578 °F

Apparently I am a geek.

Blow torch I am familiar with, lol, to finish creme brulees. Surprisingly, learning to be a chef was easier than figuring out all this vaping stuff!
What's the deal with dripping?
From what you said before, I am guessing I need to stay between 1.8 best taste, and 2.3 best battery life? So I could get a 2.0 atomizer that is 510 threaded and put a drip tip on it and it will taste better than these cartos that always taste like filler?
I have a very sensitive palate unfortunately.

Also, from what i just googled the ego-k seems to be vaguely somewhere between 3 and 4.2 volts, so on that chart, the "sweet spot" is 2.6 and higher, but is it dangerous to go higher? Did you say the lower numbers get better flavor?

Oh boy, you're really asking interesting questions. This is a little outside my current (hah!) knowledge so my terminology may not be exact but I think the principle is correct.

The charge in a 3.7 volt battery is not always 3.7v. Depending on your charger, it will be around 4.2v when it is fully charged. As you use it, the voltage drops. Eventually it will get below 3.7v. It will switch off when the electronics tell it that it has gotten too low to be effective and to prevent overdischarging and wrecking the battery.

I don't think that has much to do with the volts it sends to the atomizer which should always be around 3.7v if the battery is regulated by the electronics. A twist can even send higher voltages than the maximum charge in the battery!

An unregulated battery is another matter. The voltage output would not be consistent.

I would think so on the taste/battery life. not sure exactly how much difference it would make.

You could use an atomizer if you want to drip everytime you want to vape. Try a nano clearomizer perhaps?

Nano clearomizer 510

Edit: Just checked my nano and it is 2.5 ohms. Stuck it on my backup ego and the vape is a little muted compared to 8 watts on the Vamo but not too bad.

The numbers in the middle of the chart tell you the watts that the volts and ohms will result in (watts=volts squared over ohms). You will see that the good part of the chart is always 4 to 8.5 watts, but with a fixed 3.7v battery the exact number of watts you get depends on the resistance of the atty you plug in. What works for you is what works for you and is affected by a few things, including the juice apparently. Hence I suggested a couple of resistances to try out to see what you think. 1.7 is low resistance and will give you 8 watts at 3.7v. If you lower the resistance too much further you will possibly reduce the life of your carto. 2.3 will give you 6 watts. 3 ohms would give you 4.5, still in the range and best for battery and carto, but possibly a lot less satisfying. YMMV.

I stick my Vamo at 8 watts and rarely change it. Anything lower than 6 watts just does not work for me personally. YMMV.

Dang, the Vamo is on sale at discount vapors but they're sold out. I'm ready to just give up these ego's. I think I would be happier without all these filler/carto issues.
I keep not really enjoying the weird taste of all these liquids I keep ordering.
How did you make your icon show up on all your posts? I thought it would happen automatically when you put a pic/icon on your profile but it doesn't seem to.
PS, thanks, you're smart! lol

It could just be the liquids of course. There are a lot I don't like. And of course, depends on what you are using it in. I am not a big expert on clearomizers as I've hardly used one. You probably want to go look in the Clearomizer subforum further down the forum list page for advice on that.

Other people are smart. I can just remember what they say and understand (most of it). Makes me look smart!
