States target e-cigarettes as potential revenue source

In an era of revenue-hungry state governments — some still dealing with declining revenue from traditional tobacco taxes and recovering from the Great Recession — taxing e-cigarettes seems likely to get the most attention from state lawmakers in 2014.

"There is zero, emphasis on zero, justification for taxing e-cigarettes right now," said David Brunori of the group Tax Analysts, a nonprofit tax analysis group that provides insight to private firms and government agencies. "What this is is a money grab. It's a way of trying to find revenue to replace lost tobacco taxes."

What? You mean it's not all about health?!?

Be sure and increase tax on batts, electricity, PG, VG, flavorings, nic, wood, metal, delrin, plastics, glass, and other heat sources to cover a few bases.

The only thing that's actually in danger of being taxed is the nic. Writing laws to focus specifically on things like batteries or mods would be too ambiguous.

The proposed ban in the EU would suggest otherwise, although there would probably be loopholes, I just wouldn't underestimate a government's ability to ban or tax something.

I have always scratched my head. On one hand "they" tell us smoking is bad for you and you should quit to live a healthier life. Based on this statement, if everything runs as "they say it should" the day comes when everyone quits smoking and there is no more revenue from cigarette taxes. So you would think they are not going to be counting on that cash cow to continue forever, right?

So when we do stop smoking cigarettes, they justify taxing ecigs because they need to replace the revenue from the lack of cigarette sales. Wow! So what this tells me is that they have become accustomed to their standard of living based on something "they" have preached for decades now that smoking should be totally obliterated. And in case anyone pops in, no, vaping is NOT smoking!!!

TRUE "emus"!

Around here all they need do is say, "...it's fo' da' chillun" and these ignorant self-serving NON-WORKING voters of New Mexico will vote "YES" on any issue. If they can't get the political-prostitutes to "pass a law" - they stick in an a $500,000 'Special Ballot Issue" and "PASS" it does.

Cigarettes KILL = TAX 'EM and they will quit. It will keep 'the chillun from startin'!" So "the chillun" steal 'em! We pay a higher TAX! The city leaders / state leaders SPEND MORE and ....... hike the taxes again! Then they spend $2-Million refurbishing their offices to celebrate! Graft - corruption - it is rampant in New Mexico as it is everywhere.

ALCOHOL KILLS - DRUNK DRIVING KILLS = Same TAX situation as on smokes!

PEOPLE SWITCH TO ALTERNATE 'SMOKES' = LOST REVENUE! We need HIGHER TAXES! TAX E-SMOKES and save the CHILLUN!

It always THE CHILLUN or because "we know best" how to make YOU healthy while increasing the size of our corrupt coffers (not coughers)!

Our Governor says, "I think it is bad for 'the chillun'. Let's meet at the RoundHouse in Santa Fe and talk about it .... OVER DRINKS!

TAX it for the schools? No! We pay PROPERTY TAXES to support the LOUSY schools we have; it won't help!

Senile Old Man Don .......... Dislikes ALL politicians!

They get enough taxes from me on my liquors and gas purchases.
If they are going to tax anything to do with e-cigs, it should be on those little cig looking ones you get when you run
out of juice. They are about worthless anyway. May as well give them a reason to keep making those little rip off deals.
I think I paid $9 for one the last time I ran out of juice. It lasted only 1 day. I won't be running out of juice anymore!

Please note that USA Today editors (not state legislators) want states to tax e-cigs, and are trying to deceive the public to believe that state legislators want to tax e-cigs.

USA Today has repeatedly editorialized against e-cigs, and has published many articles demonizing e-cigs that repeatedly quote lots of e-cig prohibitionists (but very few e-cig supporters).

While several bills are likely to be introduced next year in state legislatures to tax e-cigs (if CTFK, ACS, AHA, ALA and USA Today get their way), we should be able to defeat most (if not all) of those bills just as we've done since 2010 when MN legislators enacted a stealth bill to tax e-cigs (that claimed to only ban e-cig sales to minors).
