The ones that don't have battery require a high powered USB port to vape well. USB from a computer gives us a not so vape tastic 500mah but our atomisers want 1000 mah. The way round it is a mains USB adapter with 1000mah output such as the ipod battery charger or a Kensington USB battery pack! With the handy 510 passthrough any USB port will do even the low powered laptop ones!
I don't think so. With a 2.5 ohm 510 atty 1000mA from a 5V supply isn't gonna cut it. You need at least 1500mA (1.5A) to get it to a vapable 3.7V and considering the extra resistance of the puny USB wires it will actually be less. A minimum of 1600mAh makes more sense, which should provide more 'ooph' than the batteries. To those planning on building a real 510 PT forget the USB stuff and the search for a USB adapter. If you have an old D-Link router PS check it. There's a good chance it's 5V@2.5 to 3A. Jack that right into your switch box and prepare to vape at a full, steady 5V.

jlmanno, perhaps you got the info you needed, but it sounded to me like you just need a new battery in it. I had one I used for weeks, and I think it finally could not take a charge. replaced it, and the 510 PT is vaping like a champ.

I happen to really like my PT, have several, and use them all the time. But the performance towards the end of the batt's lifetime tapers off over a few days until it is done. You can get the batteries for $2-4 a piece. get a few and keep them in the fridge. I had the same issue with mine tonight, swapped out the batt, and good as new.

Are you plugging those PT that doesn't have a battery directly to the USB port? that doesn't seem right to me... what is the resistance of an atty? mines are 2.7 ohms, so V/R = I, usb port is 5volts, you are asking for 1.85A out of your usb port...

Normal usb port can give only 500mA (0.5A) which is now enough and you can burn your port (or at least in theory, if no usb ports have die yet then the motherboards may have some kind of protection but I'm not sure)...

The only way I'll use a PT without battery is with an AC-to-USB capable of holding a 2A drag...

The in-line battery is 3.7V which will bring the drag to 1.37A, but keeps it separated from the usb port, so it's cool...

Are my maths ok?

For this things an in-line battery makes sense to me since it: keeps the voltage down to 3.7v (even some people have reported that atty can do 5v fine), protects the pc usb port from high loads.

There's where were all the confusion comes from, due to the indiscriminate use of the term passthrough (PT) for anything with a USB cable. Joye can call their 510 battery box a PT, but obviously it's not passing the current through to the atty, it's just charging a battery. Cybervex sells a nice box mod (Bartleby) with a built-in charger that uses a mini USB input. It can be used while plugged in to a USB port. He has explained many times that it's not a passthrough. If it has a battery it's not a passthrough.
