Thanks for posting good photos. There were enough clues in that failure that I've been able to reproduce it, or one that fails identically, in the lab. I'll work on writing up a failure-case today for V4L.

The magnet-induced-failure (which I've seen too, btw) is another substantial clue to how the cutoff fails.

PLEASE post this up for the rest of us as well! I am very interested in what happened and how to avoid it!

For this reason i do not store or leave laying around any batteries with carts attached.
If i'm not actively using it I remove the cart.

I had to quote this again....very, very good advice!!

Sorry this happened to you Brew. Thanks for posting, so we can all be aware, and be more careful!

It's not avoidable in current product design and a fairly rare case (outside of magnetic, which is a given since the magnet attracts the plunger).

Best Practice requires I notify the company and give them reasonable opportunity to resolve it before making it public. They deserve that respect anyway. I'll let them decide when to publish.

I'm not trying to be a beach or anything - I just want to make sure Best Practice is observed so they have the opportunity to address it in an organized way.

Now also in the light of Best Practice, but more like "honor" - I need to go start a thread where I apologize publicly to Drozd. I rode him pretty hard about the cutoff protecting against this failure and it turns out there is a relatively rare way for this to occur.

I know you mentioned that there were coins in your pocket, it's a long shot, but was there anything magnetic in there as well? My phone has a magnetic part to hold the stylus on the side and it has activated the auto battery before (I don't know that it stayed on for very long, as I've always caught it). I hate that you had the perfect storm to have this happen, and I hope you're not injured.
Thats what I think the gingle from the coins and they keep it going on and on . Probably started up immediatly after each time out.

I've emailed some of the you m and e type engineering gurus here on the forum asking you review my theory.

Steve, once my peers here shoot me full of holes, we'll expand my theory to encompass their input, then I'll email you and Leaford if that works for you.

Thank you, only time I have had issues is with magnets, as well. We need to change this:p

Well Like I said, not a big deal. Not planning on switching brands, or dealer. I like V4L gear and will keep ordering as before.

It never would have gotten that hot if I wasn't holding the dog, and just back from the vets. I couldn't shake him up or do a sudden move to get to it, so it went far longer than it would otherwise, where I would have unscrewed the cart.

Keeping the carts off when not using is a good safety rule, and not vaping in bed might be wise as well.

Wow, I apologize, and will get down to the bottom of it. This is a first. FYI we are working on new battery designs, better in every way. They will take us some time. KR WILL NOT be the manuf.

Again, please, email me at smilinenterprise@aol.com and let me know what I can do to help.

Regards

Just a suggestion since new designs are being worked on, but there could be something added like a second switch that would need to slide over in order for the battery to activate at all. I don't mean the button that's on the manuals, but maybe a recessed on/off type switch. Slide it over once and the battery can be used, slide it off and nothing can be activated.

I have this sort of thing on my mp3 player. It's called a lock on that.

Removing the cart does this, the battery won't heat up if/when activated on its own, it's the cartomizer that heats up.

We're drilling down. :)

I've sent off the failure case to Steve and Leaford.

Incidentally, you don't have to screw them off all the way, so pocket-gunk gets into them. They can't make a good electrical connection if they're not screwed down pretty far, you can observe this yourself by just threading it on a single thread then trying to use it. You won't get much. [ie. anything]

I give mine a full turn off at night or before I put them in a pants pocket. My purse is such thick heavy leather I'm utterly unworried about it in there. I think it'd contain half a pound of C4. ;) (heavy leather Coach bag. The leather is more than an 1/8" thick)

I had something similar happen when I vaped 901's. From then on I never leave Carts/cartos on my batts unless I am right there. But I do throw them assembled into a pocket of my purse when out and about..better start turning them a few times to lossen them when I do that!
I am glad you are ok, BTW, your wife will calm down after a while I am sure. You must be happy she loves you enough to worry!
