What are diacetyls and why are they so bad?
Diacetyl is an additive primarily used in buttery and creamy flavoring. There are
threads on ECF discussing it as well as a thread attempting to identify vendors or manufacturers who unequivocally state diacetyl is not used in their products. Inhalation of heated diacetyl has been known to cause a serious incurable lung disease and death.
Certain vendors may still believe small amounts of diacetyl are not harmful and add substantially to the texture and taste of their product; and they may be correct. I've vaped it in the past and loved it, until learning of its possible effects. Certainly we all take some degree of risk, if not by
vaping then when crossing the street or driving a car, the question is, to what degree. A vendor may not be aware of diacetyl in the flavoring he purchases from a supplier or manufacturer but recently its use has been sharply curtailed or eliminated from many flavor manufacturers and mixologists alike.
Workers in buttered popcorn manufacturing factories apparently contracted a horrible disease by inhaling large and continuous amounts of diacetyl fumes. I'm not sure how much inhalation is considered dangerous but probably it's considerable.
Personally, I diligently scour my vendor's web sites for a statement in writing that diacetyl is not used in their product. Virgin Vapors, Velvet City Vapor, Highbrow and AliceinVapoland are some venders I've used which disclaim use yet produce creamy, buttery or cake-like flavors with varying degrees of success but I'm sure there are many many others as well.
