I am a 59 year old male. I smoked for well over 40 years and was a 3 pack a day smoker. I have been vaping for quite a few years and fell of the wagon twice, but got back on and have not smoked for close to a year now.

A few years ago I was obese and at an extremely poor fitness level. My blood work was always a mess, I developed blood clotting issues, and was diagnosed with diverticulitis. I was hospitalized probably half a dozen times with an abscess in my colon, and twice I had sepsis from the infections.

They said I had to have surgery to remove an 8 inch section of my colon, and I had to get my heart and lungs checked before they could do the surgery. My lung test showed that I had COPD, and my stress test did not come back good so they had to do a catheterization of my heart. It showed no blockage, but it did show that a small part of the bottom of my heart was slightly enlarged, and they told me I could have had a mini heart attack at some point.

I contribute all of this to 40+ years of heavy smoking.

They still did the surgery, but they told me I had to exercise and lose weight or I wouldn't be around too much longer. They recommended walking for exercise.

This scared me enough to start walking every day. I walked sometimes 2, 3, 4 times a day. At first I could only walk a mile at a slow pace (about 3 mph), and then I had to lay down because I thought I was dying. I bought an activity tracker and started logging my food intake and walking faster and further every day. I started losing a lb. a week, and in the first year I lost over 50 lbs., and was able to power walk for 10 miles at a 4.5+ mph pace. I could keep my heart rate in zone 4/5 for over an hour, and probably increased my lung capacity by at least 30 percent.

About 8 months ago I started having trouble keeping my heart rate up high enough from just walking so I started adding run intervals into my power walks. I started with 30 second intervals, then 1 minute, then 2 minutes. Now I can run 5 miles non stop.

My blood work comes back completely normal now, and I just recently had an echocardiogram and another stress test done which came back 100 percent normal. My resting heart rate that used to be in the high 80's is now in the high 50's to low 60's. My doctor is in AWE of me and uses me as an example for his other patients.

So. If you have damaged yourself from smoking as I did. you CAN reverse many of the damage through exercise. Diet alone will not do it. You have to put the work in to get to a good fitness level, and that will in turn enable you to maintain a healthy body weight, and your body will fix itself as mine seems to be doing.

I still want to lose another 10 to 15 lbs. and increase my fitness level to be able to run 10 miles, but I'm almost there.

So... don't just quit smoking and start vaping... get up off your butts and fix dat sh*t...:)

Here is my before and after...

You're story of what happened to you plus what you went through, what you had go do in order to get everything back to normal is truly a great example for everyone.

I am also 59...almost lost my right leg and almost coughing myself to death...

Vaping 2 Years and 8 Months now...my leg is back, i didn't feel it almost anymore...and no more colorful cough results...as well my blood pressure is in a good range now...and no more dizziness in my head! Sure...sometimes there is some...but that has other reasons...

Smoked for 23years. Went to vaping. Honestly wasted a lot of money on nonsense vaping gear from various places and recommendations. Been smoke free for 2.5 years. Not as fit as I want to be but the biggest issue is how smoke intolerant I've become. I was with my friend who is still on real ones. I inhaled some of his smoke passively and it took me 2-3 days for the heavy chest feeling to go. I thought there was something wrong, doc it was nothing, he said people that stop are still occasionally exposed to the smoke but I had literally been away from that type of air for over 2 years. Whenever I see a real cig I feel like throttling the person, not for having a cig, for it being near me.

Great story! Great to hear such a positive experience.

I initially quit smoking about 10 years ago with Zyban, lost over 60lbs and ran a full marathon that year. I had never ran in my life Before quitting smoking.

Shows you what is possible.

After a little over 2 years quitting smoking of vaping I was involved in a very bad 4 car accident and when I was forced to go to the hospital, after hours of tests on the heart and lungs because the air bag did not go off and a chest injury I asked the doctor how my lungs looked and sounded. He looked at me puzzled and told me I was the healthiest perform he has examined in a week, no a month no maybe all year! I said so I guess I quit smoking at the right time! He said you were a smoker? I told him almost 40 years of Marlboro Reds and he thought I was screwing with him and didn't believe me then he asked what I was doing?? I said Vaping and he said well keep it up!

5 years ago I was where you were. 60 years old, 42 years smoking up to 3 pad. I've been smoke free for 4 years 8 months. Mildly obese and out of shape.

Now, just think where I would be if I had done some exercise like you. Thanks for the inspiration...time to get off my .....

I would like to thank you all for the nice responses.

Smoking causes many issues, and I hope my story will motivate others who may have issues from smoking.

I know it's hard to get to a good fitness level, but once you're there, it's easy to maintain. I think fitness is key in helping a body stay healthy both physically and mentally, and also key to reverse many health issues.

Thanks again,
Bob

It's surprising how many of us are able to start an exercise regime after smoking for decades. I also smoked for about 40 years + before starting to vape. Vaping allowed me to transition from cigarettes with no cravings at all.

I've been doing a free weight session every other day for years now, followed by a 6 mile stationary bike ride at 80% pedal resistance. I had vein surgery on my legs almost 3 years ago to strip varicose veins.

About a month after the surgery my wife and I went to Disney World with family and I used the step counter on my phone to track walking. In 5 days walking around Disney I walked 26.2 miles and took 52K steps. Not bad for 30 days after vein stripping! The Doc told me to get out and walk every day ...

As long as I had my vape I never really thought about cigarettes once I got used to vaping all day.
