I have been where you are, but it was back in my smoking days. I had to choose between eating or smoking some days and once had to go without Television or a computer as those had to be pawned to pay the bills. Things started looking up when I decided any job would do me for a while even if it was sacking groceries at the supermarket part time. Thankfully it didn't come to that but I did get a job and felt much better about myself with a little change in my pocket. That confidence led me to a better job that I recently retired from. Now, loudly announce to anyone in the house that all you want for your birthday is $20. If that fails, call and beg or borrow some juice from a friend. If nothing else, you can figure out what you can do without and go sell at the local pawn shop instead of waiting for the yard sale or post it on Craigslist.
Lastly... You never know what you will get if you don't ask. Don't assume you know what others can afford to do or not do and don't expect them to understand that your hints about being out of juice means that you want them to offer help. ASK, they can't read your mind. You will feel much better for asking for help than to assume that people know you need help.
Good Luck and Happy Birthday
