Hi everyone,
I am new to the whole szene so please forgive my stupid questions...

My dad has been a strong smoker for like 18 years and now he wants to try vaping.

What do you guys think, is is generally more expensive?

I have heard from so called starter kits for e-cigarettes, how much do they approx cost?

Does anybody know?

Greetings from Europe!

:2cool:

Initially, I spent way more than I needed to (about $400) getting set up. Ended up with 7 ecigs and about 25-30 flavors, chargers for home and car, passthrough, cases, etc. I went wild like I do with anything new that interests me. Now that I've been vaping for 3 months and the newness has worn off, the costs have dropped dramatically. In fact, I spent nothing for a month and a half. A couple weeks ago I did spend about $30 on some menthol with I have found to be a favorite eventhough I never smoked menthol cigs. I figure that in the three months of vaping I've spent about $450 but would have spent $540 in cigs had I been smoking. ($45/carton x 12 weeks). BUT, if I had to do it over again, I would have gotten a couple passthroughs (which I love) and maybe one or two manual ecigs later with some menthol flavors and saved a bunch. It's all trial and error at first but you can get by with much less than I spent. I was a heavy smoker like your dad for longer than your dad too. I quit the very same day I got my first ecig and have not had one single analog since then. Get him a passthrough, carts, some juice, and see how he likes it before going whole hog! Good luck to him!

Hello Patrick-Star, I think I will be able to answer your questions.

I'm glad to hear your father is interested in vaping! If he makes the switch, it would provide great benefits to his health.

Vaping definitely has the potential to be less expensive than smoking analog cigarettes.
The important thing is to do the financial math beforehand to make sure of that.

I will provide you an example of the start-up costs and maintenance costs of vaping. All the currency is in terms of US dollars, as that is what I am most familiar with.

1 starter kit = $60.00
10 empty cartridges = $10.00
30ml of e-juice (to refill your cartridges) = $20

Total startup costs for one month: $100.00

Cost for the next three months:
$108 for 180ml of e-liquid.
$10 for one atomizer.

Total: $118 for three months, or $40 per month.
Compared to $4/day for analog cigarettes; $120/month or $360 for 3 months.

The average e-cigarette user uses 1-3ml of e-liquid a day, or 30ml to 90ml a month.
So, assuming a cost of $18/30ml, e-liquid would cost from $18 to $54 a month.

A Joye 510 atomizer is usually guaranteed to work for a total of 60ml of e-liquid passed through it. Proper cleaning, however, would enable an atomizer to last a lot longer.

Batteries must be replaced approximately every six months to one year.

If you stick to buying the minimum amount of things required in order to vape, the savings over analog cigarettes can be tremendous.

I hope this helped!

P.S. I wrote a small guide which may be of interest to you as well:

Once you get past the initial purchase, a heavy smoker can get by spending 60-70 dollars a month if you buy the juice and refill your cartridges or cartomizers. Every once in a while it will be necessary to buy new atomizers and new batteries.

For example:

Complete starter kit (Ego or Riva) $59.00
Spare attys or cartos 30.00
Extra E-liquid 30.00

Total $119.00

So, you can get pretty well set up for the price of about 2 cartons of cigs. From there its a matter of will power to keep from buying every new PV you hear about.

There may be some additional added expense during the first couple of months while you find the right flavor and nic strength of juice, but then you should be able to get by spending 60-70 dollars a month. YMMV depending.

Here is a site based in the UK that you can look at to get an idea of pricing. I'm sure there are some German web sites that are comparable and the shipping cost would be a bit lower.

Once you find a PV that you like, you can certainly save a considerable amount of money if you buy e-liquid yourself and refill your carts on your own. The problem is that it can take a long time to find the setup you like. Most of us start with some expensive but not ultimately very useful mall-style e-cigs, and then move on to something a bit more hefty, like an eGo. Some then go on to drip-style mods juice feeders of one kind or another.

The good thing is that if you start with something like an eGo, you're starting at a pretty good place, and if you want to move on to something more than that, you can either sell or give away the gear you already have. I've given my eGo to a friend who has since dropped analogs, moved to a box mod, and has passed the eGo on again.

Basically, a bigger initial investment (starter, extra batts, juice, etc) can mean a better long-term likelihood of staying off the analogs because they have more flexibility in the strength of the juice you use and such. =) Best of luck in finding what your dad needs. =)

I live in New York so my cost of smoking was huge. At 2 packs a day, I was spending about $115 a week. As others mentioned, the start up cost are about $100 and you can go nuts buying gadgets and fine tuning the equipment ( I did ). But now I've settled down and it runs me about $35 a week between juice, the occasional battery and atomizer. Roughly 30% the cost of smoking for me.

More important than the expense is how remarkably better I feel. This stuff is nothing short of a miracle.

I agree with what others have posted. Started with 2 DSE 901 kits, juice, PT for around $115. After about 6 months of vaping, moved up to 5v mods.

You can lessen your costs of vaping if you shop "deals". Co-ops are great for bulk purchases. I tend to buy amounts that will cover about 3 months of supplies, be it atties, juice, batts.

Take advantage of sales and discount coupons is another way to keep costs down.

DIY juices saves money. (For example, I just spent about $100 for flavorings. But that is enough flavorings to DIY for at least 6 months or more.)

The classifieds are another way to save when vaping.

If you shop wisely, vaping is way cheaper than cigarettes./I]

I am very very new to this (quit analogs on 11/10/10) so take that into consideration.

I generally have been pushing people towards the Blu cigs to get started. Now before you all shoot me, there is a method to my madness. I have noticed that some people who try to switch from analogs just don't like it, and some do. Using the Blus gives you the chance to try it for free (30 day money back guarantee). Once you are sure it can work for you, you need a nicer system and can use the Blus for emergency backups.

Now if I knew before starting it would for a fact work for me, then I would skip the Blus and go straight for at least something like a 510. Personally I went with the EGO and so far am pretty happy. I have enough stuff coming for plenty of spares so in a month or so when I have everything I am sure I need the Blus will be given to someone else as a starter kit to see if they like it.

As for saving money, my wife and I both quit and have spent approximately $450 on vaping so far, we used to spend $50 a carton, one carton every 5 days for a total so far of $700. At this point we have enough equipment to last us at least six months (that is if we didn't crave new flavors, LOL) so are we going to save money? I estimate we spent $3650 a year on just cigarettes, then another $50 on lighter fluid and flints. I doubt very seriously we will spend $1000 in a year on vaping so that should save us around $2700 a year!

Patrick, smoked for 40 years or so and stopped when I got my first ecig 8.5 months ago.

At that time my analogues here hit $18/pack and I used approx 1.5/day, so $27/day. So savings an 'smokes' is about $7,470.

Costs by using ecigs, aside from initial purchase which should be about $120 for an eGo with spares and some juices, is:
Batteries: 1/3months = $5/mth
Attys: 1/3weeks = $7/mth
Juice: 20ml/week = $18/mth

So total running costs are $30/mth, or $255 for 8.5 months.

Don't know, but I figure I'm well in front!!!!

I have been vaping since 1st week of dec. quit analogs xmas day and have spent less than 200 on 2 different kits and juice. and if you look at my sig you can see how much has been saved since xmas day at2 1/2 pad(packs a day)
p.s. But getting my health back is priceless

What do you mean with "getting your health back"?
Like are e-cigarettes are not harmful to your lungs/body at all?

If so, that would be really cool.. :)

They also have disposable 510 kits for about $10-15 each. I have no idea what the BLU's cost, but this might be another idea for people to try. I have even talked to co workers about them.

Thanks to all answering my thread here.

I really apreciate your answers.

Like mentioned above I am totally new to the whole szene and I think it will take a while until I will also be "a brain" as you guys. My dad, however, was very happy to read such informative answers. He is just searching the internet for a startet kit! :)

:hubba: Besides that we both are really interested in the flavouring thing. My dad has smoked normal cigarette tobacco like LM or Marlboro for years. I personally think theiy haste horrible...

So e-cig with flavour are just to cool to be true! :headbang:

If they are, certainly less so than analogs. I have not had one asthma attack in four months now, and my doc says my lungs sound clear for the first time ever.

While I doubt vaping is as good for you as quitting inhaling anything-it's certainly done well by me.

Will you save money, maybe. After all my startup cost and juice sampling, I should be even in a few years, government/state taxes will most likely cut a few years off the break even part. Will I be in better shape, maybe if I could get away from the computer more often, takes a lot of computer time checking on the latest sales and coming here. Am I enjoying it -YES....
