Just got back from san francisco, I get out of class at sf state at 4 on fridays, and decided to wait out the traffic with a happy hour margarita. Anyway, though I vape in public, I never do so indoors. After I finished my margarita I was feeling pretty good and really needed some nicotine, but the bar was so crowded I knew if I gave up my seat to go outside I wouldn't find another. Finally, with the help of my margarita and serious cravings, I got up the courage to ask the bartender if I could vape in there. (I don't like confrontation, rejection or drawing attention to myself) For those who don't know, Chevy's is an American-Mexican food restaurant, pretty family friendly. So this was not your typical bar. Anyway, the bartender got all excited when I showed her my 510 and explained it would only look like smoke etc. She's like "hang on let me ask my manager" a minute later she returned and said that he said as long as there was no smoke, there was no problem. So I spent the next hour studying, vaping, and answering questions from those seated around me. I'm so glad I asked, I will be more comfortable asking next time.
Just thought I'd share

IMO, you totally did the right thing by asking permission first. I have never vaped in a bar without first asking. Again IMHO, it is RUDE not to ask in places that do not allow smoking. If I were a manager of a bar my number one concern would be the aggregate happiness of my customers. Regardless of what it actual is, the vape off an ecig looks very much like smoke off an analog. This can quickly lead to a whole of time trying to pacify the clientle for the benefit of one vaper and one more potential hurdle to ensuring the customers have a pleasurable experience. Bottomline... even knowing what it is, if I were in the bartender's shoes I'd at least want a choice as to whether or not to permit it.

Kudos for asking and vaping your head off at Chevy's! :)
