If you saw someone in a bar with a toy parrot on his shoulder it would be silly looking. But you wouldn't think it's silly because he wouldn't bring a real parrot into a bar. If someone mistakes it for a real parrot, that's his problem, not the person with the toy parrot. And the offended person has no right to insist on a ban of toy parrots because he's allergic to bird feathers.

Haha, this is such an awesome analogy. Thanks for that, Sailorman.

I wasn't vaping when I went to San Francisco last Fall, but...boy do they hate smokers!!! Every homeless person for a mile sees when you pull out a cig...and they all want 1! I was standing in the damned gutter in front of a rental car place...in the gutter!...and a woman walked by on the sidewalk...saw me smoking...and then went into the whole, "Cough, COUGH" waving her hand in front of her face...lol. You'll just have to see...I love SF, but...wow!

I live in Los Angeles, which can be a pretty unfriendly place for smokers and banned nearly everywhere. Since vaping is not known by many and not mainstream, I treat my vaping like I'm a smoker and tend to step outside into a smoking area. The act of vaping and the appearance of the vapor looks like smoking. I'd rather do that than try to explain how it works and what it does. And honestly, there hasn't been much official research done yet so I don't want to give out false information on what it can do to others.

At work, people usually ask me what my device is since it doesn't look like a standard cigarette and everyone so far just nods with understanding. People don't seem to be offended by it with some stating they don't smell anything or that it's pleasant (I vape with watermelon or grape flavor). But still, I don't vape in common areas and still only in smoking sections. I've had someone say they had no problem with me being inside doing it, but I just don't need others wondering what it was I was doing. It's not anyone's responsibility to have to go out of their way to research on it. I had to step out before as a smoker, I can step out again vaping. And besides, I like getting outside anyway.

With my family, they all tend to not care where I do it. They prefer it over my old habit which admittedly stinks and is proven to be harmful to others. But, again, I try to be considerate and will sit near an open door or go outside.

I actually pulled my e-power out of my purse while looking for a pen last week. I was in a meeting with my bass - in her office, at her desk. She was obviously curious what on EARTH I'd just plunked down - so I explained - and did a short demo. As I turned to blow the vapor over my shoulder, her face went from a confused frown to the look of a child whose just been shown a magic trick. She laughed, and said "Ev, that's HILARIOUS! ~ is it STEAM?!"

...And honestly, there hasn't been much official research done yet so I don't want to give out false information on what it can do to others. ....

There's been enough research about what is in exhaled vapor to know that is' a lot safer than what comes out of the tailpipe of your car, or your bbq grille, or your lawnmower, or your chainsaw, or about a million other things that you do to pollute the air of other people.

There's water vapor and about 0.006mg of nicotine in a puff of exhaled vapor. You'd have to lip-lock someone for a long time for them to get as much nicotine as is in a tomato. If you're worried about exposing someone to harmful air, you really should start by biking instead of driving, or getting off the electrical grid, or using a manual lawnmower.

That's a good reason to vape something that doesn't look like a cigarette. Then, most people won't think you're smoking. In San Francisco, you'd be a lot better off if you were vaping something that looked like it contained an herbal preparation, if you catch my drift.

I vape at work all the time, though I work in a music and film studio where most everyone smokes and nobody minds at all. The only time I go outside with the smokers is if my client is being a pain in my backside and I want to get away from them and clear my thoughts for a few minutes.

As far as vaping in public is concerned, I do it openly in restaurants/bars where smoking is banned, but I usually get the "OK" from one of the staff first. Other than that, grocery stores and whatnot, I usually don't. It's just less hassle. I mean, I've never been hassled about it, most people are just curious, but I like avoiding confrontation in general. After years of smoking, I got used to going outside for a puff and I kind of enjoy the solitude and the "smoke break" aspect of it. But like I said, in restaurants and bars, I have no problem asking and then openly vaping. Ever since the Florida indoor smoking bans, many bars are now smoke-free, but I figure nobody goes to a bar to feel healthy about themselves anyway, so I'm just taking back something that should have never been taken away to begin with.

I vaped at Starbucks a couple weeks ago, and nobody said anything. I sat in the corner, and it wasn't even that noticeable. I got a couple "looks" but no one approached me and there were no complaints to management, as there shouldn't be. There are more annoying people at Starbucks talking on their cell phones than people vaping an e-cigarette.

Starbucks in some places will kick you out for vaping. There was a big thread about that a little while back. The OP was told he couldn't even vape in the outdoor patio! Nobody could tell for sure whether it was a corporate rule or if the local managers had the final say-so. The consensus was that it was a corporate rule, but some managers ignore it. You can vape at that Starbucks, but don't assume you can do it at all of them.

Hmm, I haven't really vaped brazenly in front of others in an indoor setting yet. I have vaped while grocery shopping, but when no one was nearby. I guess I feel a bit guilty doing it indoors because it might make people mad. Maybe I'll get more adventurous with time?

If you feel it's brazen, you probably shouldn't do it. If you can do it comfortably minding your own business, it works. If you look for someone to object, they just might. It's an attitude thing.

I kept my same smoking habits that I had when I burned analogs with the exception that I don't have to smoke outside at home anymore. I still wait until my breaks/lunch to vape @ work. And I don't smoke in places that would cause me to draw unwanted attention only because I don't want to be bothered every 10 mins by a complainer or people who are just curious.

Only negative experiences I've had have been w/ ppl who think I'm smoking pot. Oh, and a cop pulled me over for distracted driving because he mistook the glowing blue tip for a mobile device screen. XD

I work from home so I would only smoke inside my home or outdoors the rest of the time. I even stopped smoking
in both of our cars due to the smell plus my husband quit smoking successfully almost 2 years, he went cold turkey which is amazing. Now that I am vaping, I doubt my habits would change except I can vape in the car on longer trips. But for several years now, I have not smoked much in public and I have few friends who are smokers. My sister is allergic to smoke so I would never smoke around her. My best friend also is very allergic to cigarette smoke.

I only want to know if others had problems with like vaping in a public restroom as I do not want to draw attention to myself or answer a bunch of questions about vaping if I light up in a public place. But since my best friend and sister are allergic to smoke and I no longer smoke around hubby, what I would do is smoke outside if we went somewhere. It would be nice that If I could at least go a public restroom in a store or restaurant and vape as I used to be able to do with all these allergic people in my family when smoking publicly was allowed and done everywhere.

Anyone having any trouble or getting any grief from vaping inside a public bulding restroom, stairwell, etc. ?

I may be one of the few people that in the 70s and 80s when people were smoking in publc places, I still would not do so often because the people I was around the most were allergic to smoke and got quite ill. So I would go to another part of the restaurant or in a restroom to smoke when that was allowed. LOL, it is funny but I am used to stealth smoking as I was doing it since I started smoking all those years ago. I guess I will have to do the same vaping but perhaps I can get my allergic loved ones to understand it is not smoke as my husband now does not care if I vape in front of him.

It is odd, but I am more concerned about being able to stealth vape somewhere so not to get a lot of questions and also
because my sister in particular hates the look of women smoking saying it cheapens them so she would freak over vaping too.

I think some people object to the Look of Smoking even it is Vaping, it looks like the Act of Smoking. That is what I have heard
from Friends who Vape. People are objecting because it looks like smoke and it is not fair to non vaping non smokers or some crap like that.
