I have been following this thread and I am rooting for him as well. I have friends that are pretty much the same as his and I think he would be surprised at the response he may get, as others have said every smoker knows smoking is not good for you and when they see me vaping I have yet to get razzed about it. Instead I am explaining what flavors I am vaping and where they can get a pv. I think the majority of smokers even though they don't want to quit would really like to and when they find out how successful vaping is they are interested.

just get the ego twist kit from elitevaporworks...if he cant get a decent vape from that then he is doing something wrong...also it comes with everything you need to get started....good luck 
So for out and about, out with the boys, out where you don't want to have to carry a big ole case to fit a larger battery.... what would you reccomend? A smaller 650 ego or a joye cig a like battery.... Keep it 510 compatible please.
out & about I use a small 650mAh ego battery with the small viva nova tank. Great setup, small, bat & juice will last a good 3 hours of chain-vaping.
Hi, wow, you've been on an incredible journey so far Tracie, I just read all this and called my wife over a few times to read some of it, we were chuckling pretty hard at some stuff. My mother in law turned me onto this when I tried her v2 cigs, but I had troubles getting them in Canada at the time, and forgot about it for a year or so. Then a few days ago one of my buddies and I went for coffee and he had an ecig instead of a cig and said, here, puff on this for a while and see what you think. It was the joyetech 510 ecig thingie, the cigalike. Now I know a little more, and saw that that could be a great 'out with the boys' option, but with a proper cartomizer on it instead of the kits atomizer setup. I do believe you can buy the little 510 threaded batteries, so if Craig wanted he could just pop the cartomizer he already uses onto it and go out with the boys.
This should be taken for what its worth, which is really nothing, as I am still waiting for my ego kit to come, I have an eroll that i ordered to start with and the atomizers just can't handle what i wanted them to haha...I am a heavy smoker and I would imagine they were crying out in pain with the amount I was puffing on them. The few days that I used them, I didn't smoke analogs except 1-2 a day and was looking forward to quickly being done with them when my equipment quit working.

I came back because it keeps popping up on "my posts" lol... sooo...
I use a joytech 650mah ego c upgrade with a carto while out and about. I always recommend them to noobs offline because of their size, ability to stealth with them, there are no leaking worries and extra filled cartos take small space to carry and no juice bottles required... and, truly, they just look classy. I have black, steel, blue, bronze, red, green and... oh, well. These are especially good for males as most don't use fanny packs anymore... and the size of them means he can even carry two charged batteries in his pocket so won't even need to consider charging equipment. The thing with a noob is to make it as user-friendly as possible. They can change things themselves later. I use the same setups at home in passthrough with more mah version as I like them and don't fix things that already work. As for the something like an eroll or njoy, I haven't used them but evelwmn on youtube likes them and think she does reviews on a couple of others like them also:

+1 on the Joye 650Upgrade. 5-6 hours I use the Passtrough- easy to charge/vape in the car.

I think I will look into getting a couple 650's so that he can transition into taking it on the go.... so far he's doing great at home!! And he's not even a "chain vaper," he just takes a hit every so often, its so infrequent that I don't even see him do it more than 2 or 3 times in a night (so I know he's doing it when I get up to go to the kitchen or chase our son lol). I'm kind of surprised that it is satisfying his cravings, but thrilled that it has knocked his home smoking almost completely out!
I would only like to mention the Itaste MPV. I know Ego's and Kgo's are a great place to start. But I had one and while it served it's purpose. I found that I was constantly having to swap and charge batteries. Being a maintenance man, trust me, he may find it becoming a hassle. He needs a device that's going to last ALL day. I know I was a pack a day for 35 years.
I starting buying mods and passed my ego set up to my son. Who stumbled with it a couple times, he would be with his friends and find his battery dead and bum a cigarette, then buy a pack. Finally I got him set up with something to last all day with no hassles and he's doing good.
The MPV has a 2600 muah ( which means "should" last about 26 hrs between charges) its built in, no charger or extra batteries to buy.
A complete kit with every thing he'll need (except juice) is gonna be in the $60-$70 range. It's small, well built and rectangular, kinda like a pack of smokes. Only smaller, and he's already used to carrying a pack anyway I assume. Watch a few reviews pbusardo has a great one, his site if you don't already know is "Taste your juice.com" lots of fantastic information there. He's helped steer me in the right direction, I made the switch the beginning of this year and never looked back.

There are other MODs than what have been mentioned that I "would" suggest, but OP said her man prefers it to be as inconspicuous as possible. Once he is over needing it to be so small, there are a few robust, manly, maintenance man worthy PVs out there.
