Hi everyone, I've recently started vaping to quit smoking. I've smoked on and off for 30 years, but during the months I was able to quit, I always felt deprived (except when I was pregnant, it was easy not to smoke then). I've done gum, patches, mouth spray, hypnosis, you name it. I recently started vaping, and it is way easier than any other method I've tried (even though I live in Australia where you need a doctor's prescription to vape but can buy cigs at the supermarket). I have half a pack of cigarettes in the drawer, and have smoked two in the last month (the last one tasted revolting). I no longer stink, no longer cough, and my neighbours are much happier now I'm exhaling clouds of vanilla-scented vapor rather than cigarette smoke. I think I might finally do it, but just have two niggling questions:

- I vape a lot more often than I smoked because I can do it inside. I also used to hold off smoking if my neighbours were on their deck or in their yard so as not to annoy them, and that's no longer an issue. Has anyone got any tips on how to limit vaping so it doesn't become an all-day habit?

- I don't get quite the same throat hit as I did with cigs, and oddly I really miss it. I vape a pod system so the level of nicotine and the heat is not adjustable, would love any advice on this as well.

Thanks so much and hope everyone is staying safe and well!

Vaping is much less addictive than cigarette smoking since nicotine w/o the other stuff in cigarette tobacco is only mildly addictive (if at all). As your physical addiction fades, you may find yourself vaping less with no effort on your part.

A little trick you might try, if you're concerned, is to not have your device handy. Keep it in a different room so that you have to get up and go retrieve it when you feel the need or desire, then put it back where you're not when done.

Hello Australia! Welcome, Oz66.

I once had the same questions you have about frequency of vaping. How much is too much, how much is enough. I never saw a real answer to that question in the forum. After vaping these many years, I truly believe the answer is to vape as much as you want. I still say if I'm awake I'm vaping. Whatever amount keeps you off cigarettes is the right amount for you, and it may change as you move forward.

As for throat hit and vapor warmth, it may take some experimentation with liquids and equipment. When glass clearomizers began to replace plastic ones years ago, I noticed much warmer vapor from the glass ones, a surprise I'd not known I would enjoy so much.

If you can't get open systems, your choice of battery, tank and liquid, then I can recommend that a tiny drop of a strong cinnamon or other spice, or a pepper flavor, just a teeny drop, might give you a little more throat hit at your current nic level.

I tried in the beginning to keep my vaping habits matched to what my smoking habits were, meaning I went outside to vape and vaped for a similar amount of time to a cigarette an equal amount of times per day...

After a while you won't be tempted to vape overmuch even if you start back up vaping in the house...you just have to get used to the replacement factor first.

As far as TH (throat hit) different systems allow you to regulate the power levels and/or give you a better TH... You may consider exploring some different set-up's to find one that serves you a little better. Since I don't vape pods and avoid TH I can't make any useful suggestions as to brand etc, however.

Welcome OZ.

I would agree with others here that mention getting used to where you're at and what works for you right now first is a good idea.

You can get a pretty good throat hit but will never be able to duplicate the lung expansion feeling you get from smoking. I know for me it took about a month to get used to that.

As far as getting an optimal device. I have joined a couple of Aussie forums where folks work together to get what they need regardless of current restrictions. (PM if interested)

A device with more variable options will allow you to customize your juice to get a better throat hit. I like to add a little Koolada when I need to feel that tickle in the throat. But we all know, taste is quite subjective and different for everyone. Do what works for you!

Good luck, stick to your guns and keep up the good fight.

Has anyone got any tips on how to limit vaping so it doesn't become an all-day habit?
Hi, and great decision! All the power to ya!
My advice? Remember that you won't get the quick hit from the vape that you did with a cig. Take a hit or 2, then let the vape do its thing.
And similar to a diet strategy (where you only eat when you are hungry, and stop eating not when you are full, but when you are no longer hungry) Vape when you feel you need to, and not just because it is time, or habit.
And put the thing down. Take a hit (or 2), then get it out of your hand. Even if just for a few seconds. I have found myself "chain hitting it", and I wind up overdoing it.
But our mantra here, If it works for you, it's good. Whatever it takes.
(and we didn't learn how to smoke in a day, it'll take some time to learn how YOU vape)

Again, Ms Oz66, best of luck. You have our full support!

I'm new to this community, so I apologize in advance if I'm not following any specific rule/template to replies.

I quit smoking 1-1-20 with vaping, after smoking for 16 years (I started at 16 years old). We didn't smoke in the house either, so I definitely relate with vaping MUCH more than you smoke. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions for you. I literally have my vape in my hand 24/7. Here's the way I'm looking at it: I will quit when I feel it's time. No one can tell me to slow down either, as that will really not work in the long run. It's like if someone tells me not to do something, then I HAVE TO do it. My answer to your next question might help with this.

Regarding your throat hits, it's really just a combination of what your vaping, the device you're using, and the nicotine strength. I used to smoke menthol Newports, which have a pretty strong throat hit. I don't vape menthol though. However, you may want to try doing that. I feel like lemon tasting flavors have decent throat hits (pink lemonade, lemonhead, etc). If you're using a pod device, I'd look into getting a box mod and a sub tank. Maybe try a geekvape 100w starter kit, as those are usually pretty cheap and easy to work with. The kit should come with everything you need, except for the battery. I remember reading that you needed a prescription for vaping, but have you thought about making your own juice? I make mine. It's very easy! It's also really cheap. There are tons of supportive groups online, that can help you get started. It costs a little to get started, but it's still MUCH cheaper than smoking & buying the juice.

Anyways, good luck with quitting! Just take it one day at a time!

Welcome to ECF, L1vvy. Your reply to the OP (original poster) is fine and all, but you should have created a new thread with its' first post being the 'intro' part of your post in this thread. Note that this is just a 'polite' suggestion
