I've only been vaping for a week, but I stopped smoking the moment I got my ecig. For me a big part of it is paying attention to the aroma (there's not much in the way of actual taste in vaping, or in most of our experience of taste). As a Chinese tea enthusiast I already have a pretty good palate, and something that I've seen numerous times is that once you start really paying attention to your senses, it can and does have a pretty profound effect. It's 'addictive' in and of itself; it opens up a whole new world to you, and I've seen many people develop healthier habits all around when doing so -- without even really trying. (All of this can be hard to fathom if you haven't experienced it.)
Your expectations play a large part in many aspects to this (including getting over the negative behaviors), but you can use this by looking for certain types of smells one at a time (spice, fruit, floral, etc) and seeing what you can pick out. The tobacco flavors tend to be the more complex ones, but there are a lot of different tobacco flavors -- some of them even I find disgusting -- and some of them (e.g., Halo's Voodoo comes to mind) aren't strongly tobacco-like. Of course you can also mix flavors.
Another big way that expectations play a role is in feeling deprived. If you feel deprived, then it's going to be much harder to get past it. If, however, you can think of this as something better than smoking then it will be a whole lot easier. Perhaps you can think of other ways to prevent/counteract feelings of deprivation (rewards or something); I didn't even think about smoking when I got the ecig because I was too focused on exploring flavors.
With that said, maybe consider using a lower-nic liquid for your normal vaping, and a higher-nic one when you get a craving? Also keep in mind that cravings usually only last for 5 mins.
