I got a bad cold about a month ago, I kept on vaping as it was actually the only thing that seemed to ease my cough. Two days later I had pneumonia. I can't say there was a definite connection between the two but I know In 35 years I've never had pneumonia and have had lots of bad colds. I can say this is the first cold where I was vaping hard thru it. Whether it's related i dunno. I'm hoping not so.

...spend some time in the health section of the forum...colds/pneumonia are effects of quitting the funkarettes...often, incorrectly attributed to vaping...along with zits, hair loss, and hysterical blindness;)

p.s. keep in mind, PG is used in hospitals in breathing treatments for upper respiratory infections as well as being introduced into air handling systems to keep bacteria down(PG is a bactericide)..........mj

I doubt the two are related. When we first start vaping, we tend to be on the lookout for ill effects and may blame any new health problems on the vaping. I went through something similar about 4-5 months after I started vaping, but it wasn't pneumonia. I put off going to the doctor because I was afraid she would tell me it was the vaping causing my troubles. It turns out it had nothing at all to do with vaping. She got me on the right medication and now I'm healthier than ever.

I dunno. It just so happened when I had backslidden from vaping and was smoking 5 to 10 or so analogs a day(wish I was one of the lucky ones that could easily put the analogs away and just vape). Once the cold hit I stopped the analogs and went primarily to vaping cause like I said before it seemed to be the only thing that would tame my uncontrollable cough.

i've had pneumonia once a year for the past two years, always following a bout of bronchitis (about 3-4 weeks after). I stopped smoking and started vaping during this year's bronchitis episode, and do not have pneumonia (nor a lingering cough like I did the last two years). they probably have nothing to do with each other, but anecdotal FYI nonetheless.

This is an interesting topic for me. I realized I was born with congenital lung defects (a boatload of blebs) 6 years ago when my lung spontaneously collapsed (while sitting at my desk at home, blogging on the computer, for cripes sake.) And yet I tested out as negative for both emphysema and COPD... Bottom-line, I have weak out-pouches/bubbles on the surface of my lungs, which with phlegm/mucus in the lung put stress on the weak spots and they go POP.

So, smoking is a huge no-no for me. I have tried gum, patches, lozenges and have been thinking of hypnosis. But I've been hearing so many success stories about E-cigs that I've decided to give it a go. And am STILL trying to find the best set up for me to start with...

Anyway, thanks for bring up this subject. I had not thought about any tie in between vaping and lung congestion. But will now be looking into it a bit more. It's nice to know that hospitals use PG in treatments..

Side question, I believe I've acquired a moderate allergic reaction to petroleum byproducts, is there anything with vaping that I should avoid?

Proof? Not that I've seen. Proof of anything is usually difficult and because vaping is so young on the scene compared to other products that have been tested for inhalation that there aren't any long terms studies on the effects.

Here is a compiled list of known possible symptoms related to quitting smoking and vaping collected by the members here if you have any concerns.

You'd think that because pneumonia is asocciated with fluid in the lungs, vaping could cause it but generally fluid in the lungs is a symptom due to bacteria in the lungs (as I hopefully correctly understand it) which initially caused the pneumonia. There was a post by a nurse somewhere that backed this up but I can't find it. You take water vapour into your lungs every time you shower or stand near steaming water and it doesn't cause pneumonia either.

Searching "pneumonia" on ECF, I only found one blog post making the link: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/420gypsygirl/553-making-case-regulation-e-liquids.html

Propylene glycol (one of the popular bases for liquids in ecigs) is a germacide so in theory it should actually prevent pneumonia, rather than cause it. If you keep your gear clean there isn't a strong link between vaping and pneumonia I can see.

I hope I didn't get anything glaringly wrong with all that. If in doubt, ever, I'd consult a doctor ('cos I sure 'aint one :D) if you get any symptoms you're worried about.

Just jumping in, I've been vaping for a year now and got my first case of pneumonia this last September. I went to walk in because I couldn't see my reg Doc right away. Told this Dr my symptoms and that I have been vaping. She said mine 100% sure came from an ear/sinus infection. She could see the offending matter going straight in to my lungs. I know it's not proof one way or the other, just my experience. :)

Congrats on taking the BIG step to quitting..*clap*
I smoked for over 30 years. I have COPD and HAD to quit. My daughter researched e-cigarettes and talked me into trying them. Both her and I have quit. Smoked my last analog about 4pm Nov 14th. Haven't touched one since. Haven't even had a craving for one. Anyway..by this time I usually experience a bout of bronchitis. I got it about every 3 months..Nothing so far. not even a cough..I can breath normal again for the first time in 10 years.
BTW I vape Atomic Fireball flavor. Yummy...
Stay with it ..I tell you its worth it.

Nicotine is a skin irritant. 100% PG lets through the most nicotine irritation, hit and flavor. In extreme cases of people using high or extreme nicotine, especially in 100% PG juice or by over-doing vaping, a few have irritated their lungs. Typically though just some mouth or throat irritation and then they buy some decent juice with a bit of VG in it to buffer the irritation/flavor/hit a bit.

In addition, vaping is drying. You have to drink fluids and stay hydrated. If you get dehydrated your mucus membranes could be drier and more susceptible to irritation and infections from germs you already have.

But vaping does not give people bacterial or viral diseases unless you are sharing your ecig with someone who is sick.

I just thought I'd throw my recent experience into the mix. I just got sick for the first time since I started vaping about a year ago, and prior to quitting analogs and starting to vape when I would get sick, I would stay sick for NO LESS then three weeks and sometimes longer. This time I was sick for 4 days, 4 DAYS, I couldn't believe it...!!!! I haven't gotten better so quick since I was 15y/o. I truly believe that its because I'm not smoking. I had a horrible sore throat and clogged sinuses which in the passed had ALWAYS turned into the death rattle(cough). I vaped through out this entire illness and never coughed once. This all happened last week and today I'm 100% better and that hasn't happened 15 years!!!!!

Just my 2 cents...

I quit smoking 5 years ago. Last year I REALLY came close to starring up again, but instead started vaping.

About 1-1/2 months ago I got pneumonia (for the first time) that lasted for weeks. I stopped vaping when I started feeling sick, but finally came back to it a few weeks ago. Not sure if there's any correlation, but I haven't had any issues since I started back up again.

I'm just gonna chalk it up to the 'super-bug' that usually starts getting passed around this part of the country when the cold weather starts to settle in.
