Yeah, I'm going to cut back on the Koolada next time, and use vanilla flavoring instead of juice. The vanilla is barely perceptible but it did help smooth it out and adds a nice little something :)

I add vanilla to many of my mixes, I have Vanilla Bourbon, Madagascar vanilla, french vanilla, bavarian cream and vanilla swirl. It depends what the base is, and sometimes I use 2 or 3 different ones at different strengths. A lot of time you can't identify vanilla as an added flavor, but it gives a fullness and a richness that just makes it for me.

Are you looking for the taste of a menthol cigarette or sweet peppermint candy...there's a big difference

Well, that's the part that is giving me trouble. I don't know. I want to duplicate what I have, or come close. Not interested in tobacco flavored, just trying to find a recipe that matches, or comes close, to what I have.

I know I haven't given you much to work with.... So I'm not expecting any answers. I'll try the other recipe in this thread and see if that's closer. What I made yesterday is vapable, so that part is good....

Ok, reporting back as promised. I tried the recipe above. Found it a bit too harsh and lacking in the smoothness of menthol sensation. However, I doubled the menthol (I used the peppermint not the wintergreen) and added 9 drops of 18mg vanilla e-juice to smooth it out. Still not quite as smooth as menthol sensation but a very good start! Got to find out what's adding the harshness. I made mine to be 50/50 pg/vg mix, 18mg nic. The menthol sensation is 80/20 pg/vg mix.

I'll keep working on it once I vape up the 15ml I just made :)

This is what DIY is all about- making what tastes right to YOU. Very glad you are making good progress! :toast:

I've been using a DIY Menthol 66% concentrate http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/diy-e-liquid/549552-adding-your-diy-menthol-crystal-mix-ejuice-calculator.html at around 1% in my DIY juice. Currently adding 0.6% Vanillin but I still need to find the right additive to take more of the 'roughness' out of the menthol, maybe some different vanillas? I have been turning to peppermint in lieu of Koolada lately too, add to taste.

Creme De menth does a good job of smoothing the mix.

That might be just what I'm after. Thanks! :toast:

I got my menthol crystals today, and just mixed them up as instructed on the packet - in a 10ml vial I filled half with PG and filled up the rest with menthol crystals. I put the bottle in hot water to disolve (should have warmed the PG first), and it came out well!

I put 1 drop in a 3ml bottle with a pina colada mix, and it was perfect - for my taste anyway:p

@black6host,

It looks as if your Menthol concentrates are very similar in strength to my DIY version. Maybe the harshness is simply due to Menthol and Peppermint overload? Looking at Amanda's recipe, she has made a concentrate in the 50% range but applied it at 1.6% (if 20 drops = 1ml.)

I'm thinking maybe go 0.8% - 1.2% on the Menthol & say 1% - 2% on the Peppermint. Maybe less will be more!

I'm vaping this now, and it is rather harsh - definitely not as smooth as it should be. The menthol taste seems just the right strength, but it needs something to take off the edge - and this was made in a 70pg/30vg 12mg nic base. I do have some ethyl vanillin powder - perhaps a little of that (diluted of course)?

Keep us posted if you try that. I really like the juice I'm trying to clone. It's seems peppermint may be the predominant taste but it definitely has that menthol iciness to it. When I try again I'm going to lay off the koolada, add some vanilla again and lower the percentages of flavors. If we keep trying...... :)

@Amanda,

Be cautious with the EV, I made mine at 10% in PG. I've tested it thoroughly and it smelled wonderful plus turned things pink in a mix but did nothing for the rough edge, may have even made it worse at a 0.5% - 1% concentration. I'm now playing with Vanillin 10% which adds a creaminess and also turns my juice pink but I'm still not content with the texture. Some have said it may be a steeping issue but I'm not yet convinced. The quest is on!

P.S. I have TFA Smooth as well (smells like Pineapples to me) and I can sense how this may be a good blender for savory flavors but I'm not sure this will get us to the land of say Halo Menthol Ice...

I don't get pineapple at all, imo its like a very weak version of m-type. Oh well, just throwing it out there.

Very interesting, when you have used it do you think it changed the mouthfeel of the vapor or does it just blend the flavors to you? To me it adds a little something, not exactly sweetness but in the middle upper octave range.

Made up my first TFA menthol experiment and after a few days steep I like it.
First couple days had an odd exhale, but now its good.
Not sure what the last 2 ingredients bring to the party, you could probably omit.

tfa peppermint 2%
tfa menthol 1%
tfa koolada 1%
tfa creme de menthe 2%
tfa vanillin 1%
tfa sweetener 1%
