I noticed that you said that you did both juices that session... you could have reacted to the PG and thought you reacted to the VG. The 2 things I would do would be... Get an allergy test for both PG and VG see which one turns red and puffy or buy some USP Glycerin from a drug store which does compounding ( most likely an older non franchised place ) Walgreens CVS etc normally dont carry it. Dampen up a wick with the straight Glycerin and take 1very light hit and wait to see if you get the tingles in the mouth throat ( have the benedryl handy just in case) If there is no reaction then you can more than likely rule out the VG as the culprit and start looking into the other aspects of the juice ( flavoring, potential PG additives, alcohol...)

CVS does carry VG (glycerin) I buy it there all the time and use it for my DIY.

Please do not take this advice. You had a severe reaction and the next one could be fatal. This is nothing you want to do on your own. Please do not take chances, people die from anaphalyxis every single day and the advice above is careless.

I suppose I need to be a bit more specific... CVS and Walgreens in New Orleans doesnt carry it.

Try looking on the very bottom shelf in the lotion section. It is their own brand name, so it stands to reason it would be chain wide. It took me a few times there to finally find it. And don't ask the pharmacist or the staff, they will tell you they don't have it, or at least they did me ;)

This is what it looks like:
CVS Pure Glycerin USP - CVS pharmacy

ETA: as an added bonus, I use the old bottles to mix my ADV in

Thanks all for the replies.. I just scheduled an appt with the doc for this Friday. Will post update after..

That is great news ... I would strongly urge you not to vape at all until you have seen the Dr. Like already mentioned, for this brief period, smoking MAY actually be HEALTHIER to you! I would not even try any of the old gear/juice that was only causing hives, at this point, your body is reacting to something and now that you have gone down the anaphylactic shock road, the reaction will more than likely be even worse next time.

Please let us know how this works out!

I've had allergies all my life and develop "new" ones almost yearly. As someone else said, you're always "allergic" but don't know it until your body makes enough antibodies to the substance. The allergy test is a simple one. They just dilute whatever way, way, down and inject a bit subcutaneously.. don't even feel it. If it gets red there, then you're allergic. I'm not recommending this but, just being myself, I would dab a bit on my skin and see if a patch of red develops there just out of curiosity. Not taking it internally it wouldn't be a big deal to me. But, of course, as others have said see a doc. If you are allergic to VG, you're up the proverbial creek because its in so much that we eat and put on our bodies... from twinkies to soap. It would be a tuff one to live with. But your allergist can even pin it down to the type of VG... what the glycerin came from... for instance corn so you might be allergic to one VG and not another especially the synthetic type being used so much today (could be the only one you're allergic to) should you ever really have to use VG for something and then you can get it at special places where you know the source of it.

That is something I would be willing to try for a test, but I will wait to hear what the doc says first.. I'm thinking that it is something in the flavoring that gave me the sudden reaction rather than the Vg. I have a hard time believing I could be that allergic to something that is found in all of these products that I probably run into daily and never have problems with. The hives could be from the pg or vg in addition.. Idk. want to find out though.

I do hope that you can figure this all out.

I am curious to know if you were using the same liquids that you started out with when you started getting the hives? Or was it something new?

I was using BWB Casablanca(70/30vg) almost exclusively, but it is worth pointing out that I was increasing my usage around the time the hives came about. But, I had no other issues ever in the past year of using. I'm of course, really not 100% sure the hives are even from the juice at this point(although it is the only explanation I can come up with). I am sure that what ever gave me this sudden reaction was indeed from the GJ and/or BB and there was hives present at that time.

This really isn't a time to try the elimination thing on your own, if that's what you mean. Your reaction to whatever it is sounds remarkably similar to my own reaction to the antibiotic called Amoxicillin. For what it's worth, I used the stuff in connection with dental work since getting a shoulder joint replacement. It was fine for several years, till I suddenly developed a sensitivity to it.

Agreed.. I definitely want to take the safest steps to figuring this out.

Well you have your Dr appt.. so I am not going to suggest trying anything before then.
I am allergic to bees, red ants etc...

Every time I get stung my reaction becomes worse. (similar to what yours was with the VG)
I have let my anakit go long passed expiration. I do keep benydryl on hand. Liquid is best.. but still not as good as a anakit.

Do not vape until you see the doctor. I had a similar, but less threatening, reaction to vaping a vanilla custard about a month or so ago. It burnt my mouth and throat and lips and my throat was closing up. I took several Benedryl pills immediately and the swelling subsided. But it took almost two weeks for my mouth to heal and for me to vape regular juices again. I did vape plain vg for those two weeks. My sensitivity was to the flavoring in the vanilla custard. I also have a sensitivity to cinnamon so I also can not vape that.

I am glad you are going to the doctor. You may want to bring a sample of both juices with you to the doctor appointment. If the doctor is an allergist, he may have some way to test them to see what caused your severe reaction. I would have someone else portion out the juices. You should not touch the bottles or get any of the juices on you or in you. Good luck and please let us know how you make out.
