I have made a few hybrid wicks and my best performance was from a cotton surrounded by a thin layer of SS mesh (just to minimize the chance of dry burning). Everything had to be rolled quite loose. Worked pretty good on the higher gauge wire (30 / 32) and shot for around 2 ohms. And yes - it was a tipper!

Wick style usually comes form how you actually vape (tilt, vertical - how you hold your device) and the contents of you juice (PG or VG % dominant).
SS mesh solid (more vertical)
SS mesh straw (tilter)
SS mesh 400 or 500 is just the micron size of the mesh (many people claim that the 500 is better).
Cotton wick
Silica wick
Porous Ceramic wick
Nextel (XC 116 or 118)
This list and combinations (including the coil wire) is endless.
If I can give you a suggestion, it would be to work out 'How' you want to vape, then try the different materials to satisfy your TH, V & F!

yeah for some reason it doesnt wick at all. the hybrid i mean.

a solid wick means more capillary action and hence you don't need to tilt as much or can leave the fill screw on. also no or minimal leaking.

aga-t wick hole size is 3mm. in fact my wick fits a little loose actually. but no wicking at all, even if i tilt it almost upside down.

and i followed the diagonal cut of the mesh like you guys mentioned, not sure if it wicks better then the normal vertical cut?

maybe the silica should run only from halfway down in the mesh. will give that a try and see if it solves the problem

Diagonal cut will make very little difference (preferred is the grain running lengthwise). Diagonal cutting is only good for making U wicks IMHO.
Are you leaving the filler screws out when you vape? Sometimes, you can create an air-lock/ vacuum and the juice will not flow.

My inkling is that the silica doesn't do vertical wicking (it doesn't actually suck up the juice). It does great just laying there in a dripper; but its not gonna carry the juice up a ladder for you. In this form of hybrid, I think it is just taking up valuable space the mesh could make better use of. Also, I think it clogs the mesh pores that it touches; so, now your mesh isn't doing what it could. Silica, by itself acts as a great "reservoir", and works well as a tipper/dripper or bottom fed dripper in the Genesis style. But I think the mesh chokes it and doesn't let it do what it could. Silica does not like to be confined or restricted. Just an inkling.

I would agree with that statement! Maybe when you wrap/ roll mesh over silica, the silica fibres are straightened and like you say, silica is more of a keeper of juice that a climber for juice!
