Hey bourbonman,

Is there a break in period when you rewick. Seems like the first 20 hits or so are kind of bla, and then it gets better and better.

With cotton, there does seem to be a break in period, even when I boil the crap out of the wick. With SSmesh, it's a much shorter break in, just a few puffs if any. I'm back to SS for wick, and although its a bit more of a PITA to set up, it lasts so much longer without gunking up it's worth it to me.

Here's my new idea, haven't seen it anywhere yet so it might be a Bourbonman original. I took a gunked up head with a SS mesh wick off the Vivi, and "powerwashed" it with my Waterpik. Blotted it dry, and back to work it went.

Ok I just got some grade 5 titanium wire in and am measuring 6.4ohm per foot. At 2.062" of wire I am getting 1.1ohms. So I need 3.75" of wire to make 2 ohms. Looks like fatter wicks and more wraps to make 1.8 - 2 ohm coil.
Havent tried the grade 5 yet as I ordered before checking the different grades. Since grade 5 is only 89.55% pure titanium and the other 10.45% is aluminium, vanadium, and iron. I am not sure if I want to try this. Guess I will have to look for Grade 1-4, since they are considered CP (commercially Pure) titanium.

Well at least I have an idea of the resistance.

Ok I found CP Grade 1 titanium wire, and requested a quote of 100' of .020 wire. Here is where I found it:
Titanium|Metal Distributor|Continental Steel & Tube
Hopfully I will know more tomorrow :)

I had the same hesitation with lower grades.... There doesn't appear to be an easy over-the-counter type supplier. I passed by Continental expecting the quantities to be too large to experiment with. ESPI Metals has no minimum, but will only sell to businesses.

I'm interested to see what the difference in resistivity is between the G5 and G1 too.... haven't actually found any info on that.

I did also initially, but if you look at their quote request system:
Titanium Wire|Metal Distributor|Continental Steel & Tube

Notice that all the measurments in length is Random? 10-20' ??? So I figure what the heck lets see how much this will cost me LOL

I will report back when I hear somthing.

Just got the quote in...

We can only quote this in a spool as follows:

Titanium CP Grade 2 Wire – Annealed condition
Finish: Etched
Size: 0.02000" +/- .0004"
Quantity: Min is 2.9 Pounds and 4,700 feet
Price: $850.00 lot charge
Freight: $46.90
Shipment: 3-4 weeks ARO
Validity: 5 days

So that would be .19 cents a foot or $19.06 for 100'
And CP grade 2 is all they can get at this time.

hmmmm co-op possibility?

I would participate in this Co-Op. Can you acquire confirmation as to the resistance per ft?

Ok, this is the response on resistance, not what I was hoping for....

Please see Engineer’s reply. Thanks.

We do not spec. a resistivity on our Gr. 2 Ti raw material, with that in mind this estimate is a ball part estimate (±10%)
Gr. 2 Titanium, in the annealed condition at .022” diameter will yield a resistance of around 0.640 Ω/ft.

According to the engineer, we would need 3.125' to make a 2.0 ohms coil!!!
Dan

Added:

Ok they misunderstood me, that quote is for .020" 24g wire and not 32g .0080" wire. Re-requested a quote on:

32g .0080" .2mm GP Grade 2 Titanium with the resistance check.
