I'm having a problem using a cheapie madvapes VV mod with standard (2.5 to 2.8 ohm) Joye 510 atomizers. I actually prefer 901s but, I managed to mess up my adapter. Don't ask, it took talent. I have another adapter on order but, in the mean time these 510s are all I have. I have one of those inline madvapes voltmeters and I'm running a little under 4V.

In just a few days the atomizers are developing what appears to be an intermittent short. I'll be drawing on it and feel the atomizer cut out. The box seems to act to protect itself and won't work again until I turn it off and on. Then it'll work for a while but, the time keeps getting shorter. I've tried vaping with the voltmeter on and it works pretty much the same. The voltmeter verifies that when it cuts out I'm getting zero power. On a meter the atomizer resistance reads normal. However, changing out the atomizer solves the problem for a couple days.

4 volts isn't a lot higher than normal voltage. I can see it shortening the atomizer life some but, this is ridiculous. So, what's the deal?

The reg is probably going into thermal shutdown. Hopefully it has some breathing room and you didn't do the noob, cover-it-all with epoxy thing and you are making solid contact with the inadequate pad on the PCB.

You understand how those work?

If your batteries are at 8V and you set your output for 4V the difference, 4V, is simply being burned off as heat by the regulator. In other words as much heat as your atty is generating the regulator has to dissipate the same amount (more or less).

Those don't sound like Joyes, my 510/306/Megas are 2.2-2.3Ω.

Ive run 2ohm atty on my madvapes vv for a few weeks before going back to cartos, never had a problem. As for the regulator crapping out on you, I doubt it. I also don't think it has a thermal shutoff seeing as it fired in my pocket at 5.5 volts for like 15 seconds and almost melted the chip. I have small burn marks around the soldering points. IMO the madvapes vv mod is pretty robust for the price. I drop it on a daily basis because the battery door is a little longer than the other half and it won't stand up straight when I put it on its ...
