Jeeze.. I can only go back as far as I can remember... What comes to mind: (not sure of the order)

Detonator (Multi-volt)

Nuck's Fistpack (Multi-volt)

Buzz

Joker AV

Ken's Box mods: Little Sister / Big Brother

Those are the earliest I remember.. Of course there were many others like the VV Ali'i, VV Saber Touch, etc... ProVari came out in late 2010. It would be interesting to know the very first.. :)

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that ProVari was the first VV e-cig device commercially available...

Mike Buzzetti (maker of the Buzz) has submitted a patent application for variable voltage applied to a vaping device. The proliferation of Chinese devices has made whatever protection a patent might otherwise provide a moot issue, but the point is that he's officially documented the Buzz into vaping history as the first commercially produced-and-sold VV device.

I've been led to believe it was the Fistpack (still sold, btw as Vaporlux, & made by someone else) and then the Buzz and not too long after the Provari and the Darwin (vw), coming out very close to the same time.....but Technonut may have it right for the earliest.

I just know the Fistpack made a big difference.....and the guy who made it was a modder. Whether he or someone else actual made the first one may never be known. You may be able to find here at ECF who sold the first ones. :)

All the ones I mentioned were popular when I signed on in early 2011 though Nuck might not have been making the Fistpack by then.

You might find the Ecigarette Mods Database site helpful: Best e-Cig Mod List | e-Cig Mods Database

It's been maintained longer than the few years I've been vaping, and under the Buzz listing, you'll find the following comment: "First Commercial mod with an adjustable voltage without battery change" (Back in the day, the first crude attempts at variable voltage amounted to switching out the number and output of stacked batteries). http://www.ecigarette-mods.com/type/battery-tube/

And that's the right answer. ecigarette-mods.com has been around for a long time and has been mostly well maintained.

In fact, speaking of well maintained history: Dig deep enough in to the ECF modders forum and one can find the exact moment in vaping history the very first person posted the idea of vari-volt... which happened to be buzzkill.

I suppose it is a little bit subjective though. Nuck technically had the first commercially available device that could output different voltages with his fistpack, But, the fistpack wasn't really variable voltage. It was selectable voltage. It had several fixed regulators by way of resistors + diode for a PTN04050C booster and you could select which resistor to put current through. The buzz was the first variable voltage (where the regulator was trimmable) device sold commercially, and the terminator was out (also made by notcigs) a couple of weeks before the joker av was released.

Technonut could very well be right about the Detonator being before Nuck's Fistpack... I remember some threads regarding it, but I've always been completely unclear about just how commercially available the multi-regulator version really was. The 5.0v fixed version was certainly around and available a while, but I don't remember much discussion about the selectable voltage one. But, then, I might have missed a few things. I started lurking ECF sometime in the spring of 2010 and the earliest posts I remember regarding the 5.0v detonator were probably started in the late fall of 2009, but I just don't recall when the first discussions about the selectable voltage detonator started.

EDIT/ADD==-->

An interesting bit of ECF trivia regarding VV and VW is that not only was buzzkill the first to mention VV, but VW was probably his idea too. "...The ultimate would be to have a controllable Wattage device , that can be adjusted." - Buzzkill 01/24/2010

Great detective work six!

When I first started reading ECF, I read every thread I could find regarding modding and/or function of these devices. I have to admit that it took a long time for me to get sold on VV and I held out on buying or making anything but mechanical and fixed volt devices until early in 2012. But I religiously read every word posted by anyone interested in improving PVs. --- That thread by Scottbee might be the most linked-to thread on ECF. For about a year after it started, it was the go-to thread for recommended reading whenever anyone had a question about how batteries behave.

I'm constantly amazed by how far a handful of modders on a couple of forums were able to advance the user experience with e-cigs/personal vaporizers.
