Hi,

I am a non-smoker trying to help my dad who has been a smoker for 32 years. This last year he has cut down from about two packs a day to less than a pack but he has hit a plateau. He just can't cut down further but he has not increased either so some good news there. He works from home which I think is part of the problem since he can smoke whenever he wants. Anyway his birthday is on the 21st so I thought maybe these E-cigs could help.

I have been reading this forum a lot but I just don't understand anything. I know he would not like something that is complicated or time consuming so something that is as easy as possible is necessary.

I am Canadian so I was reading that forum and there were a couple of threads praising the Bloog MaxxFusion Mini PCC Starter Kit and I was about to order that when I saw their "juices" don't contain nicotine. Obviously my dad will need nicotine. I have also seen posts about buying pre-filled.

I would just like to buy everything at once and enough to last a couple of months without having to reorder so he will really give it a try. I think I am still interested in the Bloog but now I need to know what else to get and where to get it. I would prefer to buy in Canada. Money, within reason, is not a factor. I am splitting with my two siblings.

If anyone could please just give me a list and where to get it, I would really appreciate it.

You need 5 non-spammed posts or replies in New Members and about an hour's wait and then you can post in the Canada forum.

Meanwhile - how technically competent is your dad? Is he a tinkerer or a technophobe? And what kind of cigs is he smoking. Full strength? And how long would he need a single battery to last? The close-to-cig size models like Joye 510 have batteries that last 1-3 hours depending on how heavily they are vaped. A bit longer like Joye 510 w/ mega xl batteries gets you 60% more battery charge. A fat battery model like EGo or Riva 510 gives about 3x the battery charge or more depending on the battery length. For any of those there are PCC cases you can charge overnight then use for some amount of charging on the go.

Once you figure out where/how to get eliquid in Canada (the Canada forum can help you) then you need to figure out what will work well fro your dad. I recommend the Newbie videos in the sticky threads of New Members.

Paullyn - Got no advice for you mate. But i'd like to say god bless you. I hope you find the right gear that will lead your dad away from the awful smoking habit. He's done very well cutting down. Vaping on an e cig will give him every chance of quitting.

My father in law passed away 10 years ago. He smoked everything going, pipe, cigars, roll ups, tailor made,
and although he quit cold turkey i know (we talked a lot) he missed smoking sooooo much. I wish he could've had an e cig. He would have been in his element.

Very well done and good luck in your quest to help him. How cool that he has such a caring offspring.

Good for you... thinking of him and his health. He may (or may not) fully appreciate this yet....

It's real hard to tell how someone else will react to e-cigs. Particularly when they don't have any skin (money) in the game since it is a gift. Also, many people will tell you that the cig-sized systems don't work as well (and it's true) but people starting with e-cig often feel they NEED a cig sized PV. It's what I purchased the 1st time at a smoke shop. If they would have had an eGo there, I probably would still have purchased the cig-sized PV, not knowing any better at the time. lol.

The constant battery charging drove me nuts, and I switched out a month later. The important thing was that it got me to quit smoking, not that it was perfect.

Get some tobacco e-juice. See the vendor's list and reviews. Probably 18 - 24 mg. (hard to say for sure... go 24 if he smoke regular strength, non-lights. lights/ultra...IDK 18?? It doesn't really relate 100% so it's hard to select for someone else.)

The bloog is fine. Get an eGo unit next month if he is still interested in vaping. Any KR808D-1 is cig-like. So is a 510. The 510's are popular due to the availability of "stuff" that attaches to that model's threads/connector. Plan on 1 month = 90 ml of juice. That's 3 30 ml flavors of nic.

The kit should at least have 2 batteries and two atties, + charger. Plan on ordering him (or his ordering after he save the $$ from the $10.00 smokes in Canada) another kit so he has batteries and atties and a spare charger. You can purchase atties separately too. Again see the vendor's list for prices too ;) The money you save can pay for the upgrades as you go.

Good luck. Hope he takes to it.

P.S. Pass Thru e-cigs are nice for people that work from home (if using a computer) or work near a computer and can vape.

Good for you - I wish i found this forum 5 years ago - my dad died from lung cancer then

:(:(

im using the maxxfusion and the patch. Patch fills the nico withdrawal and the bloog helps with the habit. works so far - i feel much better about this quit attempt than i have with other attempts.

Keep on quitting dude!

Here's a 45 year smoker's input after a month tobacco free:

Buy him an eGo MEGA LR starter kit and some sample juices. It comes with two units/hi cap batts, charger and five Marlboro carts (which I hated). He can wash the Marlboro juice out and load 'em up with other flavors.

I know of several smokers who gave up on vaping due to flavor, throat hit and short batt life. With the above, he will have an excellent opportunity to quit tobacco.

If he doesn't like the eGo, I offer to buy the kit from him/you for half price.

Seriously. I'm ardent about PVs and an advocate for spreading da e-cig WORD. It's your Dad's health... don't go cheap.

To you, my sincere appreciation for your concern and efforts!

You say he works from home. I would suggest you get him a pass-thru accessory (which you can use instead of a battery while stationary) that he can plug into the wall or computer or even his car. This will allow him to vape at will while doing sit down work/driving. Those times have always been the times I have needed the ritual of smoking most. That way he won't have to always be messing with batteries.

40yr heavy smoker here.I didn't want to quit I just thought i'd get an E cigarette for the times that I couldn't smoke such as Airports.. looking at the gum and patches in the departure lounge made me feel I was being s-c-rewed. My wife was watching some programme about Hollywood and there was this awful woman smoking an ecig at a dinner party and I thought yay I can annoy people with that.
I had something that looked just like a cigarette in my basket at amazon but decided to do a little more research before committing to buy! finding this site, after a lot of reading I went with liberty-flights and got a Riva read the instructions, and smoked a roll up as the batteries were charging, first puff on the e-cig and I knew I was finished with cigarettes. I started with 24mg e liquid (which seemed about right) in 4 or 5 tobacco flavours plus menthol and cappuccino as the vets on here suggested a non tobacco flavour, 2wks later I couldn't stand any of the tobacco flavours and now buy only the fruit flavours...i'm sure your father would find this quite an easy route to take its quite pleasant, and makes you able to smell and taste stuff ..as well as being social (nobody is going to complain if you smell of fruit!) hope this is of some use, can only thank the people on here for some great support and advice.

I smoked off and on for 55 years. My suggestion is get him a Go-Go or Echo they both have 3 ml cartos and 1300 mah batteries. They will work for him all day without messing with refills or charging batteries. Us old guys just want something that works without any muss or fuss. I searched for 17 months to find a PV that works all day without messing with it to get it to work. The GoGo and Echo both do that.

Paullyn - I think you are a fantastic daughter !!! Trying to help your Dad quit is a sign of love that I'm sure he will appreciate. I have no suggestions on equipment as there are so many good ones out there. I smoked 2 PAD for 46yrs and was actually scared to completely quit cigarettes. I took up e cigs as a cheaper way of getting my nic, since a pack got up to over $10.00 in NY State. At the end of 2 weeks I was down to 3 cigs a day, not really trying to quit but just enjoyed vaping that much. Then I quit. I had alot of encouragement from my family and this forum. I'm tryimg to tell you & your Dad to be patient and not get frustrated if things go as quickly as you would like. Eventually it will happen. The important thing is to keep trying. He may fall off the wagan a couple of times, so don't get upset w him. Just encourage him to keep at it. You are doing a good thing for him. Encourage to get on this forum to learn all he can, that will make the transition alot less scary for him.

As a 30 year stubborn smoker. I am/was one of the ones that fight the battles with things like the HOA Assn. because they want to have all outside (outside?) areas non-smoking. Anyway, I am only saying this in case he is of a mind-set like me.

I was smoking a minimum of a pack and a half per day. I have been researching the e-cig for a couple of years. I have had mine exactly 7 days and I am still smoking about 4 cigs per day. With me, the thoughts of quitting bothered me most because I am stubborn enough to not like the idea of never being able to have another cigarette. I have quit enough times to KNOW that I can never have another cigarette, if I want to stay quit.

My point is, it might do well to tell him you are giving this to him as a means to replace some of the analogs he is currently smoking. If he is the stubborn type like me, that just sounds better. He will probably have it in the back of his mind that he wants to replace them all, but won't feel the pressure.

Now, I have to say, if I weren't the stubborn type, I would've been able to get by without smoking the 3 or 4 per day pretty easily. I may always smoke one per day, just so I don't fight with myself about deprivation and NEVER being able to have another cigarette. LOL!!!!

May I suggest, depending on your monetary outlay, you start with disposable cigs? Say 1 or 2. Give those to him, and let him PLAY with them for a day or two. You might even consider taking him to dinner and handing him the disposable AFTER dinner!!! (Speak with managment before doing this!!!) Don't let him go outside to smoke!!!! Hand him the disposable!! Let him take the 1 or 2 home :0)

Have a kit such as the eGo or Riva as BACK up and ready to go, if he starts liking the ease of the disposables, then introduce him to the eGo or Riva :0). If he is ADAMENTLY against the whole e-cig idea, you can then ship the kit back to the vendor.

As your saying you want EASY for dad, I suggest looking into cartomizers for your back up kit. Cartomizers (carto's or cartomizers are the same thing by the way) can come pre-filled, and he can finish one and toss it until he feels more comfortable with the whole idea. Now don't get me wrong, not re-filling a carto will get awful expensive (possibly MORE so than the original cig habit), however, once he's USED to the idea of the ecig, then teach him to refill his carto's :).

Us old people if we are being cajoled into something, require some "play with it" time so we think it's our own idea and not our childrens LOL

Just my 2 cents

Good for you and your dad. I have my fingers crossed everything will turn out great and you'll be pleasantly surprised he likes whatever you buy him. I ordered a Riva 510 lite bundle from Liberty Flights for my sister Thursday evening. It won;t be a surprise but it's almost like a present for them and you hope they really like it. If you think he won't care that it doesn't look like an analog, try the RIva. It's such a great value. I've been vaping for 2 months now come Monday and looking back I can say that I vaped constantly and really didn't give a thought to an analog. If buying a juice sample kit from a supplier is not what you were thinking, perhaps look for a flavor of something you know your dad likes aside from the tobacco flavors. I think it makes it much easier to have a flavor craving then it is to crave a tobacco taste which will never duplicate the real thing.
