Ive been looking to quit smoking for some time now,and feel that the e-cig is the way to go! Im hoping to avoid making costly mistakes by purchasing inferior brands.Having read alot of the forums on this sight,I decided to join and ask for your advice on which brands are good. I really only want to do this once if I can help it,so im asking the experts. Thanks Grizzly Don.

Welcome! Need more info. There are a couple of smaller models that work well (Joye 510 manual, KR808D-1 manual) but the battery life is short on smaller models and you cannot use the hotter low resistance (LR) atomizers or cartomizers (heat enhances hit). Then there are popular fat battery models (like Ego and Riva 510) with much longer charge and the option to use the hotter LR attys/cartos. And beyond that are mods of various shapes (like a box or screwdriver shape), some variable voltage, some with a juice bottle built in, and more.

What strength of cigs do you smoke, how many per day, what is the longest amount of time you are away from power every day, and how much do you want to start with a slim model?

And for reference, 100mah is about 1 hour of moderate vaping. And most people here use and recommend manual batteries (button) - safer from being damaged or killed by juice leaks, easier to get a good hit.

Joye 510 180mah for standard (about 100mm long w/ carto), or 280mah for the 510 mega xl (128mm long w/ carto). Shipped as a 3-piece, more pleasant as a 2 piece with blank cartomizers like Boge standard resistance 510 cartomizers.

KR808D-1 (Vapor4Life, SmokelessImage Volt, Bloogplanet) 180-220mah for the shorty (about 100mm long) w/ carto, 280-320mah for the standard size (about 120mm long w/ carto). Ships as a 2-piece with prefilled cartomizers available. A DSE901 atomizer w/ cart (or more conveniently with a drip tip if you have manual batteries) can be used to test juices.

Ego and Riva 510 - typically 650mah+ (mine is 750mah and batteries available up to 1300mah). Sold as a 3-piece atty+cartridges. More typically used with cartomizers and/or atomizer+drip tip. Tank atomizers and tanks also available. Can share standard resistance atomizers and cartomizers with slim 510, but not share chargers or LR low resistance attys/cartos.

All of these use eliquid and plenty of it. Most people vape 1.5-5ml per day. Tanks and LR items may use juice faster. Cartomizers, a combined cart and atomizer, are disposable and a popular way to vape (no need to clean atomizers, flavors stay separate). With thin light juices I can get at least a week's use out of a carto and they cost $2-3 apiece for standard stuffing-type cartos.

I will second the Riva or Ego. Also pick up a few 510 drip tips and a pack of cartomizers, that way you can try all 3 of the most popular methods of vaping. Vapor Station has a very nice sample pack 10 small bottles for 25 I think, tobacco flavors are state names. Also My Freedom smokes also has good variety and good prices. It will take a while to find "your" all day flavor and maybe not, but it sure is fun trying them. Vaping worked for me, quit the first day and never looked back. I wish you the very best of luck.

A Mod is probably your best bet---my choice would be the Reo even though I've never used one (do do box mods though).
Other options:
eGo or other generic---as long as it has a long battery life!!!
I'm sure you'll hear opinions on different models but go with something that is easy to get parts for and is compatible.

hello don, for most people I know the starting point is the hardest. For me and others I know the throat can react to e-juice in new virgin ways, kinda like when you first took a drag on a reg smoke. The next day you may say "what the heck am I doing?"My two cents are drink lots of what ever while and keep it up for two weeks.

I have know a few people that did not have much luck quitting with e-cigs because they would take a couple of puffs and, because they could, then stick the e-cig in their pocket. While there is nothing wrong with this my suggestion to anyone that is trying to break the analog habit is to smoke their e-cig like they would the regular. Meaning if you regularly get 20 puffs off an analog you might consider taking the same amount off your e-cig. Imagine if you only took one or two puffs and then put it out, you would not be satisfied..same with e-cigs IMO.

I would recommend starting with a Blu, it has a puff switch (don't know the right name for that) but it means you turn it on by puffing on it, it is the same size as a regular smoke, basically it more closely replicates the smoking experience. Once you get going however there are a lot better long term e-cigs out there. I used a Joye Ego, but there are even better ones than that out there.

When I started researching I found the idea of mods and complicated hardware too intimidating. I bought a Volt and haven't looked back. Totally happy with it a month in and I haven't had an analog since I opened my box. That choice made the process very simple. Screw 2 pieces together out of a box and vape it like you would smoke a cigarette. Yes, 808's have shorter battery life-but the batteries aren't expensive and keeping a spare while the other is charging isn't a big deal to me. I swap batts once a day.

The harder part is finding a juice you like. I didn't fall in love with any of the flavors they had at smokelessimage where i got my hardware. I'm still looking for my all day vape, but there are so many flavors out there I may never stop trying new stuff.

I recommend finding some video reviews of hardware you're thinking of so you can actually see them in action. That's what made the decision easier for me, anyway.

k here are my thoughts:

1) If you want it to look like cig 808s like Dor said... Bloog/Volt... You will always have to have spare bats/chargers/personal chargers for these.... If you don't mind the fuss go 808d for PAD smoker...
2) If you want larger bat/less hassle and don't care about look go to LF and check out the posted suggestions above
3) You may think you will never hassle with refilling you own carts/cartos but you will... so save blanks...
4) So know that to throw cigs out you will always have to have spare battery(s), a personal charger or a huge bat to go to parties/events (or carry many bats)... enough carts/juice to always be covered (in case a shipment is blown) and a way to carry it around... and be prepared to charge batteries...

Don, you're stepping into a new, wonderful world. Great advice here. With 45 yrs of smoking a PAD, I would steer you toward the bigger battery ecig. The Ego and Rivas are a good choice along with the Kgo. I like the KGO because it has a bit more power and the battery lasts longer, 1100 mAh. 100 mAh is about the equivalent of an hour. With two of those in your pocket you'll feel secure. That's a big part of it in the beginning, worrying about your backup and whether you have enough juice and a long-enough charge. It can get scary. Get some cartomizers and juice samples and you're ready. Nothing tricky, screw on a cartomizer and vape. Hoosierecigsupply has the kit for $45. Breezesmokes has them for $40. Please let us know how it's going for you. Congrats on your decision.

I just started vaping, but I would recommend the Volt from Smokeless Image. I love it! I have smoked for fourteen years and am trying to quit. I vape all day on my Volt and haven't even craved a regular cigarette. I was smoking a pack day as well and still have not felt the need to smoke. I don't think that the withdrawal effects have really started yet, but I think this will work for me and would recommend it to any smoker who wants to quit.

I started vaping in March with an ego. It was ok, but I couldn't get off the analogs until I found the volt from smokeless image. I know that some people have issue with battery life of 808's, but during heavy chain vaping, I still get at least 2 1/2 hours out of it. The second battery charges in less than that so one was always on the charger. Once I was able to really get analog free, I used the money to buy extra batteries. At $13 they're cheap enough to have several so you never run out. Their juice is pretty good too... but I sometimes load the cartomizer with other juices from other vendors. I don't know.. it worked for me.

Welcome to ECF,
I smoked for about 43 years and quit on vape day 2. I started out using 36mg nicotine and it worked for me. It took that urge to smoke away when I vaped.
I have not smoked in over 8 months and still find it hard to believe.

Drink lots of water cuz vaping will dehydrate you. Belive me - it will.

If you REALLY want to quit, this is the way to get it done. I tried everything known to man - and some not known, and never was able to quit.
Vaping was so easy I didn't realize I was really quitting. I was quitting smoking, not quitting nicotine, and vaping gives you the nicotine without 4,000 toxic chemicals. Then I just slowly started tapering off on the nicotine.

Best of luck Don...you can do it. :thumb:
