If the FDA decides to apply all sections of the tobacco act to e-cigarettes, there are only a handful of players that will have the expertise and the funding to comply with the exhaustive rules the FDA has set for new product introduction, manufacturing standards, etc. To put it simply, the more cumbersome and strict the FDA makes the rules that apply to e-cigarettes, the bigger the chance that the FDA will be handing the entire industry over to tobacco companies.

E-cigarettes contain no tobacco. Those with no nicotine are not even "derived from" tobacco. E-cigarettes do not carry the same health risks as tobacco cigarettes. Therefore, it is a very bad idea to apply the same rules to a low-risk product.

Annoying reference to that CDC study that "proved" that minors are "taking up e-cigarettes". We all know it's a crock, thanks to Elaine's guest post on Carl Philips' blog: CDC director misleads Medscape | Anti-THR Lies and related topics

But this is how it works.

1. "Respected" experts shout out some bull**** to the media
2. Scientists look at it and pull it to pieces.
3. Churnalists and politicians then go on quoting the original bull****, because it's got media traction. But not the refutation, because it doesn't have media traction. Nor the retraction by the original bull****ters - because that only happens in an alternate universe!

(Mods, can we have a "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" smiley?) :D

I laugh at the 40 states pushing hard for regulation to treat/tax as cigarettes and sell it as some protect the people movement. My state brings in over $400M/yr in tobacco tax revenue. My state loves to tax and spend. Cigarette taxes bring in over $18B for the states every year. Stating the obvious but we know what the real threat is. Ecigs and tax money.

The sad thing is that if states succeed in dropping taxes onto e-cigarettes, the costs will go up. The vast majority of new users are buying from gas stations and convenience stores where the "starter products" are sold. If those cost as much as (or even more than) regular cigarettes, what's the incentive to switch--unless they happen to find out, no thanks to the mass media, that e-cigarettes are less hazardous?

It makes as much sense to tax e-cigarettes as it would to tax Nicorette or Chantix.

Chantix has a hidden tax on it already, the over a quarter billion dollars in their budget to settle 80% of the lawsuits against BP.

There was a part where they said it would go "underground" if taken over by big tobacco.. how sad if that becomes the case. Will will have to buy liquids and mods from the Mafia?

I hate to say it, but I trust the Mafia more than I trust the federal government.

Also I thought this was supposed to be one side against the other type of debate. This seemed more like two sides agreeing with each other about an evil, and the host of this video. She looked so concerned! This kind of crap makes me want to build a flying saucer and leave this forsaken rock.
