I use gloves and syringes when I'm making base. I buy my nicotine at 100mg/ml and cut it down with PG. Easiest way I've found to do it was with a couple of small plastic containers. I think my wife got them at the dollar store. That saves me from having to twist a bottle around in order to reach the nicotine, and they have a lip on them that makes it easier to pour back into the bottle. And nicotine can absorb very quickly through your skin-on your hands particularly. Remember, the LD50 of pure nicotine is pretty low. Handle it like it's battery acid and you should be safe.

I wear disposable gloves and reading glasses when I'm filling up a bunch of cartos or mixing juices. The gloves just seem like a good idea (I'd get a fair amount of juice on my hands otherwise) and the glasses - well, I can't see what the hell I'm doing anymore without them ;) I don't bother with the gloves if I'm just dripping a little juice into a carto or tank but I do wash my hands if I get any on my skin.

If I were handling high-nic liquids (which I don't) I would definitely go with proper lab gloves and eye/face protection but I used to work in a lab so I can't be cavalier about this stuff.

I first posted this just after I started filling my own cartos, I now do some DIY stuff and rebuild coils and mods. At that time I had zero knowledge at all about how to even fill a simple carto. I almost never use gloves anymore unless I am doing a lot with juice. It did not take long to learn how to fill things properly and avoid any, or very little skin contact. Working with the DIY stuff with 10% is definitely cause to use gloves, and anyone new, in my opinion should use gloves until they know how to do things right and clean. it does not take long to get used to things, but until then, just be smart and avoid getting sick. any new vape heads watch the youtube instructional videos first and save yourself a lot of hassle. I did not even know about this forum at first, so you should have seen the mess the first time.
