I saw a comment posted elsewhere which I found very encouraging. The person didn't vape theirself and was so sensitive to cigarette smoke they couldn't be around someone who had been smoking 5 minutes before. This person said they had friends blow vapor right in their face and didn't have any reaction to it at all. The only time this person said they had any reaction was when the vaper was taken into the mouth only, without inhaling, and puffed directly out at them.

Someone else posted that almost all the nicotine remains in the lungs. I think that was stated on this forum somewhere.

But what bothers me more than worrying about second hand vapor is what will the youth thing about ecigs vs analogs? Will they think it is ok to vape 'cause they won't get cancer? I don't want my kids to smoke, or vape (no matter now safe vaping is/ or should be). Ya know?

my father and my aunt smoked around me in my earliest memories with them. i should hope this goes without saying; but i will anyway- they love me very much.

unless it was some sort of a subconscious influence- its my opinion they had zero impact on my decision to smoke as a young person. that influence came from my peers and our "activities". i maintained perfect grades in school and was involved in a great deal of academic activities, and because of this i had an extremely high stress level; i reasoned that i might as well have a little fun...

but then again i was a very odd young person, i wouldn't even begin to imagine that would be the norm... i know many habits parents have rub off on children. just sharing my personal experience

So there are 2 concerns:

1) We don't want to expose our kids to the exhaled vapor. That seems pretty reasonable, I don't want them drinking my beer either! I think we have to apply the same logic we apply to ourselves, in that it's very likely better than the smoke of burning tobacco, but really... why expose them to the vapor if it can be avoided? The risks are not worth it for a non-addict. (especially one who doesn't have a choice in the matter!)

2) We don't want them to see us vaping either. Many of us are here because we picked up a VERY harmful habit that we don't want to continue and certainly don't want to pass on through imitation. This can be very tricky when as you know... THEY SEE ALL! I feel like a criminal when I lock the door to my office and vape my brains out, but I never want that image in my son's head.

I was actually more concerned with them being "too interested" in my ecig. The one who asked me what it was, was very curious. I mean really, what could I say to him? I don't want him to become attracted to it. He has seen me smoke analogs outside before....and never said anything. But honestly, I think these would look more appealing to a child than an analog. I mean, it could look like a toy or something to them....LED light, and all.

As far as the vapor, I really didn't worry about it too much because I was not directly near them when I vaped. I mean, they like to sit on my lap. I wouldn't vape with them there....but I had my bag with them on the kitchen table and when I could walk away, I would take a quick hit in a way they couldn't see. At that point, I really wasn't worried about exposure to the vapor.

My son-in-law is allergic to cig smoke but I do vape around him (after my grandson is in bed). It hasn't bothered him yet and trust me, he would tell me if it did. (Although he did make a comment when I was vaping a lot while we were watching a movie one night. The room was dark and they have one of those huge TVs. I'll admit, the vapor was billowing and kind of lingering....you could see in the light of the tv. I'm more discreet with it now though.)

Out of interest ..does anyone worry about exposing children to the chemicals given off by air fresheners?.....these days almost everyone fills their homes with various 'smells' all of which are made by chemicals yet nobody seems to worry about that at all.

now that i can smell everything it's even worse.
a little (tiny) hint of fragrance goes a long way.
i suspect these things are being used more to mask or cover up odors rather than to "freshen".
some people will spare no expense as long as they don't have to clean anything.

Everyone I know has plug in air fresheners all over the house and even then they will still spray air fresheners around......I can't help thinking it might smell nice but it's still a lot of unnatural chemicals to be breathing in and nobody seems to be even slightly concerned about that so it's good to see that someone else thinks about it as well.

I agree that it's best to be cautious around children, because they do have that tendancy to imitate adults -- children of parents who smoke are twice as likely to begin smoking I wouldn't vape around children just as I wouldn't smoke cigarettes around them.

As far as the vapor -- I'd probably stay on the side of caution there, as well.

But I sure wish all the chemicals leeching from carpet, plastics, fake furniture, paint, cleaning products, etc. were visible, too. On second thought, maybe it's better they're not...

Good point Pete. There's definitely something about it that doesn't feel right though. Last Xmas I was puffing away on a disposable cigar in the kitchen by the back door because there were kids around. My nieces and nephews saw it and got very excited. All night they kept asking me if they could have a go on my "toy cigar". Obviously I explained that it wasn't a toy but because of the way it looks they just couldn't get their heads around it. I felt awful. That said they probably wouldn't give a second look at the screwdriver or the janty stick.

JC VG vapor lingers a good while and it definitely has a smell. Son (7YO says it smells like cherry). I pretty much closet vape (car windows cracked, outside, in another room, away from kids and non-smokers etc.) like I smoke analogs. Partly not to set a bad example and partly for my own psyche, I don't want vaping to be so much more convenient than analogs that I over-do.

I hate air fresheners.

Pete, as for the air aerosol air fresheners and plug ins, I am allergic to everything! So, I don't use those things. However, I do have to clean my house and I use cleaners that smell to do so. I imagine that cannot be very safe either. When my youngest daughter was a baby, I had someone clean my house for me. I would always leave while she was here because of the smell. I don't worry so much now that she is older, but you are right. Maybe that is something to be looked at more closely as well. Who knows what is in those things. Hairspray is another conern of mine...We could probably go on all day!

I only brought it up because as far as I know.. despite the fact that less and less people are smoking....cancer and respiratory diseases are still growing, I think people should be thinking far more about why and what else could be the reason.

I agree! That could be very dangerous! Another good point! Keep that stuff out of reach for sure!

I agree,This topic should have it's own thread "Where do you keep your e-juice?" As far as vaping with my kids around,I'm like Queen,always at the pc vaping.I do try not to exhale until there is no vapor...but should probally stop in front of them altogether. The Wiz!

Wait, aren't you the person who started this thread, because you were worried about the vapor from e-cigs? Have you checked their nail polish and removers for toluene? Granted, it doesn't create any of that telltale "smoke," but trust me, it's one helluva chemical.

I'm a city dweller. The air is full of pollutants. It's probably much cleaner in the countryside (unless the crop sprayers have been out). Children live in the city too...
I agree that our aim should be not to expose children to pollutants - they're exposed to too many as it is.

My daughter just turned 2. She has never seen me smoke and I don't intend on ever letting her see me vape. This may sound funny, but I DO have a strategy when I need some nic and I'm with her. I put her in her big jogging stroller, extend the umbrella, and go for a walk. I did this with analogs and I still do it now. That way the smoke blows away (I'm always careful about this) and she sees nothing. I am sure that at some very subtle subconscious level there was an awareness of a smell with analogs, but I feel comfortable about how minimal the contact was. I remember my parents smoking all the time in the car. I even remember pleading that they roll a window down... lol!

Dunno about kids, but my cat always used to leave the room in disgust when I lit up a smoke. Vaping doesn't seem to bother her at all. I'm not saying that means that it's safe, just providing a bit of data from a nose far more sensitive than our own.
