I'm Brand new to modding and gathering info to build my first mod. I also would like to build a mod such as you described. I wanted to build something like the Vmod xl but with a recessed carto tank and 18650 battery.

I'm wondering if I should wait for the dna 12 display window to come out. What type of potentiometer do you plan on using?.

I work construction and I use my Provari at work.I carry my PV in my side pocket of my carpenter jeans and its too long and catches on things when I'm working. I ripped the tank off once and had to suffer all day with nothing to vape until I got home.

Here is a link for you....scroll down for more choices....

Thumbwheel Potentiometer - 10k Ohm, Linear - SparkFun Electronics

From what I understand, the display and DNA board for the display may be a while down the road...up to you if ya want to wait...

Since you are new to modding, practicing your soldering skills will pay dividends when you actually start your project...

Breatru has already created a display (breadboard phase) and it's awesome....can't wait to see what he does with the DNA. The guy does incredible stuff.

So what is the minimum output voltage of the DNA (IE boost or buck boost) ?

hum, haven's seen any info on minimum output voltage, but the DNA is built on the same technology as the Darwin...

The Darwin has a minimum wattage of 4.2 watts, and at 4.2 watts with a 2.9 ohm carto it reads 3.8 volts, and with a 3.0 ohm carto at 4,2 watts also reads 3.8 volts....the DNA has a minimum of 5 watts output....both use 3.7 volt high C rated batteries....so it would seem to indicate boost...

So what kind of display can we use to get close to the Darwin? I'm drawing up a case I will machine for it but want to know what display ill be able to use. I am debating a 18650 or a 26650 for the good batt life, or the rc car flat ones don't know yet.
Should be no problem connecting a voltmeter to the out voltage as you do with any regulator, the problem is that this regulates watts and I have not found a mini watt meter available yet. I once took apart a pencil type voltmeter and installed it in a mod that would give me all readings but that is expensive and kind of large.

That is badass bj43, show pics if u can. Let's see what we can come up with with time.

The mod with the multimeter fell of my bass boat into 40 ft of water, if anyone locates a mini watt meter, please post. The ones I am familiar with from RC are big. If the Chinese made one with V, watt, and ohms, with a switch to select between it would be great. The pic is one with three meters for V, amp, watts.

Tell me where I can buy one without buying a Darwin and taking it apart to then make a Darwin clone mod.

BJ43,

Brandon from Evolv is a super nice guy, I would just simply ask him, maybe he will either sell you one, or tell you where to get one, either way I think he would help you out he's that kind of guy. Obviously there available somewhere, he's got them or is having them made, so just ask, can't hurt

You hit the nail on the head. There isn't really a cheap and dirty power metering solution available to us similar to the cheap but fairly accurate LiPo voltmeters that are so popular. My plans for the one I've ordered are to use it in a 2x18650 Altoid mod, and just meter voltage with it for now. I certainly won't bury it in epoxy though in case something workable for a noob like me comes along. Maybe it will even come along before I get around to actually building my first mod. Right now I have a 3A Murata regulator with pot and board that I bought prebuilt from Maximum Vapors (for half the price of the DNA 12), also have a TI 8100 regulator, and parts enough either here or on order to build 3 mods.

Personally, I ordered the DNA 12 for a few different reasons that include anticipated shortages, how easy it looks like the chip is to work with, and Evolv's reputation. I am VERY interested to see some of the directions the truly talented modders in our community take with the new chip.
