In the past I inquired about crackling, thinking that it's not a normal thing but learned that crackling is normal. Many said that's a sign that you have a perfect build and wicking job.

One thing someone pointed out to me is that you don't want to have popping from the coil setup because that's a sign something is wrong. I just put a new build in my rda but I am getting popping noises and this never happened to me much. Before I built these particular coils that I am using, I had the same exact build and had no issues of popping.

What causes the popping? I am eager to find out because I would like to rebuild now that I am having this issue. My build is a 10 wrap, 24G ss 316l spaced coil in the goon 1.5 at 85W. Thank you.

The wicks are definitely not on the thinner side. I did the Scottish roll like how I usually do it so about half of an entire cotton pad is in each coil, minus what I snipped off with the scissors.
That is a lot of cotton. They may be too tight. Popping isn’t a real problem unless it causes spitting and you get droplets of burning hot juice hitting your tongue. If your cotton is too tight though you might be getting not enough juice going to the coil in which case it can get really hot and burn the cotton and/or cause dry hits

I call it perfection. I like popping, I like it to crack like thunder and rattle my teeth. Let's me know I am vaping and not smoking anymore. I refer to it as "action". I believe it is caused by the juice arriving at the coil fast enough that it spontaneously boils. The cause is the perfect amount of cotton, not too much, not too little. Proper airflow will keep it from hitting you tongue.

BOL.

Yes, popping usually can occur if a coil is over or under wicked, if the wattage is not high enough for the coil (trying a different gauge of wire could help this) and airflow issues. You could try raising your wattage to see if it improves matters, that would be my first suggestion. However, depending on build and wicking, it can sometimes be almost impossible to get an excellent vape, period. For example, if you raise your wattage, you may find less pops and spitting, but then, the wattage may singe inside your coil, for example.

I guess I'm saying some "popping and spit back" can be fixed, while some coils can't be remedied. If you solve it though and aren't averse to slightly higher wattage, you may find you have "fixed" the problem.

I will also note that for some builds, it takes a certain amount of time for everything to settle down. I've also had success at times (more often with a drop in coil, that wants to spit and pop because there would be no way in heaven that I would turn up the wattage more than I was going to already (a certain AIO vape I won comes to mind) that switching out type of drip tip (I wound up using a longer, ultem one) can help some of the problem. I will say that once my coil broke in, the problem was greatly reduced. Flooding can also cause this, although I will say that doesn't sound like it's your problem.

But for the most part, I have found the type of problem you are describing being the "wrong" coil (whether resistance, coil material or both) type for my desired wattage. For me, going way high on wattage isn't enjoyable, so it becomes building coils that are right for my vaping style.

Best of luck,

Anna
