What could possibly be shorting after firing?

I haven't done a side by side double-blind hypertronic study on it; but, yeah, fold the seam. The theory is that the frayed edge causes shorts.

Glad you got her sorted Intelli. Sorry about my mis-information, but I think I read that here somewhere. Maybe Youtube? I donno. Anyhow I think I learned as much from this thread as you did. I'm guessing lots of other ppl did too. ECF is nice that'a way.

perhaps your wick is shorting by making contact with the hole

wick can touch wickhole and bottom of tank. Properly oxidized wick won't care 'bout no touchy. Folks are plugging un-oxidized wicks into the hole and "pulsing" the coil's path of contact into the mesh. Check out a vid or thread on un-oxidized wick or pulsing in to set up wick. I'm starting to gather that you can't do this with just any device. Personally, I just do a light torch; maybe even only on the last 1" of wick (which will be the outside) and pulse my coil in. (the shorts actually oxidize the wick just where the coil touches). It's a bit of a hassle, tho, cause when you go to pick your coil to distribute tension, your wire moves off its oxidized path. That's why I do a light torch.

i don't have any problems anymore with coiling. i can do a coil in about 5 minutes. but i experienced all kind of shorts in my younger days. the drill bit method is the worst method in my opinion. is better if you train your hand to feel the right pressure needed to make a good coil. that's it
