I had a strange experience last night. I was laying on my back in bed with a pillow over my eyes doing the relaxation/meditation, whatever name it is that I do, and in the pitch black behind my eyes it started what was like swirls of shades of gray. I know I wasn't asleep.

I thought that I could learn anything if I could obsorb it this way. It was like total openness that I can't explain and I have never felt before. Then the pattern changed to pulsing colors tunneling to a tiny black hole at the end. It was like a movie where something is going very fast down a lighted tunnel or through space with the stars whizzing by. I then "looked" at the black hole at the end and saw it was an eye, not the whites, just the iris. I jerked back mentally and it was all gone. All of this happened in maybe 10 seconds.

Man, that sounds like a crazy dream but I was not asleep. I could not get it back and I wish that I hadn't flinched from it.

Opening sequence from Dr. Who.

I actually have the original song on my NAS (Network Attached Storge) drive. It's by a group called the Timelords from 1988. It's called "Doctorin the Tardis". The band was also known as The KLF (Kopyright Liberation Front)
I tried to upload it in a zip file for you all, but, it wouldn't take.

I think I had that same experience about 30 years ago. Might have been from the 'shrooms though.8-o

lol... I wasn't on anything, not even the cold medicine that I'd been taking the day before. I didn't even have a cocktail that night.

I'll have to see if I can do it again. :hubba:

In another thread we were discussing vapers that were having trouble getting to sleep at night. I believe you just reached a sub-conscience state of mind without going into actual sleep mode. I said it in the other thread, "The sub-conscience can be a wild place to visit!"8-o

LadyPamela you may have done what many zen budhists train all their lives to be able to do, clear your conscious mind of anything while still conscious.

google zen budhism the technique they practice can make you more focused in life than you ever have been before and can bring clarity and focus to your goals in life.

I am unable to do this at the best of times when I try, sounds like you may have nailed it you natrual you!

The pillow wasn't causing pressure. I just have the pillow laying over my face from my nose up because I want total darkness. I suppose I should just get an eye mask for sleeping.

I have done this for about 20 years. I can relax each part of my body and it goes warm/numb. I have been to points where my entire body was so numb and relaxed that I felt like I was floating because I couldn't even feel the bed.

Last night I was totally alert and was "looking" at the darkness when this started. The swirling made me think that I could learn anything, like all knowledge was there to be obsorbed. Which is way out there for me and I have no idea where that came from.

I've been studying the mind, spirituality and metaphysics all my life.

IMO the answer to your question could fill a couple of books, but to try and be brief:

You are not your mind. You are the ability to be aware. 'You' use your mind, brain and five physical senses to focus your ability to be aware into the physical. You can, and do focus your attention into the non-physical each night while asleep. You normally do not recall what you are aware when asleep because you are not using your brain or five physical senses while asleep, but rather the subconscious senses. But if you are still giving attention to your non-physical awareness when waking up you can transfer those awarnesses into the brain and call them dreams.

While doing your meditation or whatever, you (the ability to be aware) began shifting your attention into the non-physical. Your brain was still alert (to a degree) and the non-physical sensations your awarness began to preceive had to be interpreted by the brain and it translated these into physical images it could deal with; ie swirling colors and then the eye.

The shock or startlement was just the swift shifting of your awareness from the non-physical back into the physical.

For more information find books on lucid dreaming.

I am intimately aquainted with lucid dreams. I have them quite often and one in particular was especially disturbing.

I was dreaming that there was a lover on top of me as I was laying in bed. I then became aware in my mind but it was like the rest of me, and part of my mind, was still dreaming it. I felt everything and it was as real as anything could be. I thought, "It can't be real, there's no one here." It didn't end though and I couldn't wake up. I started getting scared because it was SO real! There HAD to be someone there! I knew I was dreaming but I couldn't wake up. It took incredible force to make myself wake up, make my eyes open. It was still so real that I had my head turned to the side as I forced my eyes open because there was something on top of me and I was afraid of what I would see!

Of course, there was no one there but I was shaken. The physical and emotional feelings were real.

Editing to say that I very often have these types of dreams though they are enjoyable, not in this frightening way. I am aware that I am dreaming and in dreams, anything is possible.

There is a theory about these kinds of spontaneous "spiritual" experiences. Some researchers believe that the pineal gland is able to sythnesize and release DMT (a powerful hallucinogenic molecule similar in structure to serotonin). When and why the pineal gland does this is unknown, but it is believed that intense stress could induce it, thus explaining near-death experiences, which are indeed similar to DMT induced hallucinations. DMT users often report thinking they are dead and/or seeing angelic figures, which some take to be aliens. DMT users also report being able to see "infinity" or being in outer space.

Similarly, a DMT release could also occur spontaneously or in trance-like meditative states.

Bear in mind it's just a theory and to my knowledge, there is no solid proof that the pineal indeed makes DMT.

Either that, or you were just dreaming. ;) ;)

I believe you, and I think that you might be tapping into the lower realm which is full of negative energies.

Before you meditate, you have to pray to be surrounded and protected by the pure loving white light of god. Visualize this white healing light surrounding your body and completely enveloping it like a bubble. Ask for gods angels of protection to be around you and when you meditate always focus on the white light of love.

Negative energies can't come near the white light. They are afraid of it. This stuff is real and it's nothing to play around with, unless you like having really disturbing things happening to you.

If you are surrounded by gods white light, they can't come near you. Focus on that as much as you can and try to raise your vibrational level as much as possible. If you have a lower vibration, you will attract other energies that have a lower vibration. If you have a higher vibration, you will attract energies with a higher one. That's the goal and like attracts like in the other realms.

I've had the swirling too while meditation, but they are all the colors of the rainbow swirling around and it's beautiful and peaceful. Never gray and never disturbing and I can tell you that gray and blackness is NOT good. Dont' keep engaging in that, and don't let it fascinate you because it's negative energy and it can cause havock in your life, so it's not something to play with for entertainment. They can attach themselves to you and it's difficult to get rid of them once they do, trust me on this.

I don't know where you live, but look for a "light worker" in your area. These are people who specialize in energy like reiki, meditation techniques and things of this sort. They will guide you in the right direction if you want to keep practicing your skills, but focused in a positive direction that will actually benefit you.

Join a lightworker group, attend some classes and educate yourself in what you are doing. It's very important.:)
