What is the consensus here on extremely sub ohm builds?

Battery safety and a knowledge of ohms law are the most important. I have no problems with people that build low as long as they practice safely. I flavor chase, cloud chase, on a side note, I even Tootle chase. My builds do not go under .3 ohms as my batteries are only rated 20 amp continuous discharge rate. All though now a days, it depends on the device using because of the .05 ohm limit on TC devices using nickel wire. I'll cloud chase with the best of them as long as I can use my regulated device using a 1 ohm dual coil build. ;)

My point was, that it's not the mechanicals.
It's user error, and companies marketing sub ohm tanks with pre made coils.

Pre made coils have horrible quality control. Always have.
And now they are available at .20 ohms resistance and less?

Who didn't see this train wreck coming?

User error for assuming the premade coil of a tank is perfectly fine?

Not everyone has a 510 multimeter to check coils, nor know exactly what to look for to define a premade coil as faulty

Vapers who understand their gear and have any experience at all, would never put a premade coil in a mechanical mod.
Period.
That's asking for trouble.

One out of five is usually dead/shorted out right from the pack. Everyone here knows this.
Edited to add: what I meant was everyone with experience enough to use a mechanical mod.

Yes.

If you do not own a multimeter and do not understand how to check your coils you are NOT safe using a mechanical mod.

Which bring up the other point. B&ms are pushing these mechs to new users and not explaining saftey, just trying to make a sale. Alot of new users end up buying a mech "cause it looks so cool".

With a handful of e-cig malfunctions/devices blowing up in the past 6 months, I'm curious what you guys think about builds that go as low as 0.1 ohms.

Also, what do you guys think about what the vaping community is turning into? Regarding cloud competitions, extreme sub ohm builds, cloud chasing, pumping more and more watts out, etc.

I know some people say that there is nothing wrong with these things , people just need to be safe and educated......but there in lies the problem. When is the majority of people who do ANYTHING ever safe OR educated without some sort of government or regulating body that puts laws and restrictions in place?

Personally, I don't like where things are going. It would be one thing if we NEEDED to keep lowering the ohms to get better flavor, or we NEEDED more watts to get decent flavor....but let's face this, this has NOTHING to do with flavor. It is all about who can breath in and exhale the most vapor, and look cool doing it.

I don't know, if the extreme cloud chasing was just a really, really small subset of vapers, it probably wouldn't bother me TOO bad......but it seems like so many new, young (in their 20s) vapers are obsessed with it. I can go to any vape shop near my house, and at ANY given time I can see at least half the people in there with extreme builds, designed for cloud chasing.

When did vaping become about exhaling more vapor than the next person?

The whole cloud chasing thing is so widespread, that now even new vapers who don't care about clouds are STILL using extreme builds because they think its 'normal'. I've had many people, online and in person, try to tell me that the reason they sub ohm down to 0.2ohms, and use rdas designed for cloud chasing, and 150+watt devices, is because they are flavor chasing. It has nothing to do with clouds they say. That it just insane, because you can achieve a damn near PERFECT flavor without going anywhere close to those specs.

I'm not hating, just honestly trying to see where others stand on this issue. thanks guys

Bottom line is lithium batteries are not very forgiving.

The premade sub ohm tank replacement coils are problematic for mechanicals, excellent point and worth mentioning for sure!

I know a lot of us give advice to not use the sub ohm clearos with hybrid style mechanical devices, but would you suggest to not use them on a mechanical at all? Even after checking the resistance to ensure a steady reading, the individual using it did not make the coil and isn't completely sure of the coil's structure. Say a lead is just barely making contact somewhere, then the issue occurs.

I run at .2 ohm all day, every day.

I like an instant mouth and lung fill sensation.

Flavor is good. But i could get that with a lower watt build.

I'm not showing off. I'm just not smoking.

But as has been stated before, I do that @ very high nic.

And I know what I'm doing.

I don't understand cloud chasing tbh.

But i won't knock the kiddos for it.

To each their own.

3 cheers for choices.

Yes.
I would never ever recommend a prebuilt coil to be used with any mechanical mod. Especially to a novice vaper.

Anyone who has ever used any prebuilt coils knows they are cheap and it is common to get a "dead" or "shorted " coil in a pack. This is dangerous on a mechanical which has no protection.
It's only a matter of time before the noobie gets bitten.

Those cloud competitions are so juvenile and cringe worthy. In fact, I hate anyone who blows huge clouds while vaping. I'm usually a reasonable, laid back, open-minded sort of guy, but for some reason I can't stand this pursuit of huge clouds. When I smoked I really didn't care about how much smoke I exhaled and when I started vaping all I wanted was enough vapor to mimic smoking, but huge clouds fogging up the place? Seriously, what's the appeal?

Would you rather they smoke than blow huge clouds? Serious question. The answer to "what's the appeal?" is that it likely keeps them from smoking, and part of the competition may help them with that plus they meet new people. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't make it bad...if you avoid the competitions how does it in ANY way affect you?

I'll be entirely candid on this subject, I've been vaping at 0.12 ohms primarily with single 18650 direct to battery mechanical mods for over a year(the holy grail of bad combinations in ECF eyes...) Honestly I found a build with the right wire and wraps and diameter that works perfect for me, just happens to come out to 0.12 ohms. Be that as it may, I charge between 3 and 5 batteries a day EVERY day and have been for more than a year. Contrary to popular belief I have not had any issues to speak of, no overheated battery, no thermal event, nothing that even slightly scared me for a second. Zero and I mean zero incidents of any kind really. Why is that...?

Am I lucky? To a point I guess you could argue that but the fact is that the battery is supremely important, my go to is the Samsung 25R. Yes, the Samsung 25R is rated at 20A for constant current however vaping is not and will not ever be a constant drain activity. Battery temperature is very important, you can easily pulse drain higher than the constant rating if you keep the temperatures down so myself as a limit pusher finds the opportunity to push the limits with relative safety so long as strict guidelines are followed. Most of those guidelines are common sense, buy from a reputable source, don't use damaged batteries and personally I don't use any battery after more than 150 charge cycles, I don't care about the condition I recycle them at that point because I'm pushing the limits of usage and causing excess stress, a very worn battery is much more likely to fail and you can get the 25R from reputable places for $6 each, they're not worth using every last bit of power from.

With common sense, a fair bit of electrical knowledge and some cautious tendencies you can push the limits with relative safety. However I cannot recommend anyone attempt to reproduce my usage, I assume the risks I am taking and I do not want to sway someone into taking those same risks. Hopefully now I won't be vilified for being honest about all of this, either way there it is.

It is not a shops responsibity or job to educate adult consumers on basic electronic safety.
It's a shops job to make a profit.
That is all a business does.

So what about gun shops?

I'm not trying to fight. I'm just finding it bad business practice.

"Basic electronic saftey" I never knew my entire life, up until I got an ecig and had to learn it.

There are many stipulations as to why majority people don't know it, but regardless, it is essential that a mech user knows of it.

Gun shops are not required to educate you.
You are required by law to educate yourself and prove it to buy a gun
Some offer classes for cash. Some do not.

As an adult you must always take responsibility for your own actions.

It's on you , not some store.

You can't be serious. It most certainly is the job of the shop to educate their customers purchasing their products. If someone comes in and wants to get started, it is the job of that shop and its employees to know enough about the entire business to pass on safety and the proper use and storage information of their products onto their customers. If you, as a shop owner or employee, cannot, or will not, do this for your customers, then you don't belong in the business.

Stop blaming these theoretical shops for user error.

Want the truth?
This is eight grade science. Flashlight mechanics.

We are shorting a battery with kanthal to suck nicotine vapor to get our fix.
Doing this with a metal tube is obviously dangerous to anyone with half a brain.

Mechanicals are advanced user items.
If you don't know the risks, you aren't an advanced user... No matter how "cool" you would look.

Been vaping for 4 years, lowest I've been to is 0.2 on a dual coil, and fire that baby in 150watts.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha I am old and I never learned about flashlight mechanics in school.:pop:

I'm 47.

We had shop class in 9th grade and learned to wire a house.

Welding in 10th grade shop.
However,
We learned about how battery and a simple light bulb and a switch works in 8th grade science class.

What did you learn in 8th grade science class?

Did you sleep through school?

I don't go lower than .4 on any builds to keep it relatively safe, as for cloud chucking why not? I don't like wasting juice so massive clouds aren't that important to me I do however like large enough clouds that deliver intense flavor, I'd never buy a setup that picks vapor over flavor.
