What was your "final straw" moment?

Maybe this is a silly reason, because I had no real concern for my own health, but I started dating a girl who I really, really liked a lot after getting out of a nasty 6 year relationship and she told me that cigarettes are a deal breaker for her. She lost a lot of family members due to complications from smoking. I also lost 3 grandparents from smoking. Thought it was about time to give it up. Been smoking for about 16 years.

Not silly Doncourt. Not silly at all!

My final straw, was a trip to the hospital in an ambulance in June. For a possible Heart Attack.. 40 year smoker 1.5 - 2 PAD.. End result no heart attack, thankfully but COPD..etc that goes with smoking, PV and this forum have been a life saver for me. Thus the screen name SecondChance. Good luck to all on you path to being nonsmokers! Shout out if I can help! :)

Hooray for you Second Chance! BTW, Is that a Newf pup in your avitar?

I didn't have a "final straw", at least not on a conscious level. Like others, I had been concerned by wheezing/gurgling when I lay in bed. I was also aware of decreased lung capacity, and my diminished senses of taste and smell.

But, I didn't consciously decide to quit smoking cigarettes ... even to the time my first PV was delivered it wasn't in my plans to quit.
Considering the fact that I then quit immediately, I must've had my mind made up on some level though. That still doesn't constitute a "final straw" though.

Almost my story exactly.......

The lack of breath, sour mouth, and "I like it, but I just dont want to quit" was what made me search out a new venue for mu habit....

For me it was when the wheezing started (which is like 96% better already). I would lie in bed trying to sleep and all I could hear was the sounds of marlboro's whistlin'

What was yours?

Wow. Don't I know that feeling. Hubby likes to sleep all cuddled up face-to-face, and I had to start turning in the opposite direction because the wheezing was absolutely embarrassing.

But my last straw moment was having a friend pass at 38 from lung cancer, and seeing the long, agonizing way he went. It was just wrong on too many levels.

I quit because I was scared. I couldn't breathe well laying down at night. It felt like a had a 10 lb weight on my chest and my lungs couldn't expand.

I did smoke for 30 years but after one week of vaping, that felling went away and I could freely breathe at night:) And I can sing in the car without getting dizzy!

when the dentist said " i want to show you something i found on your soft palate "

That totally happened to me:

When I was 14 I told myself I'd quit after high school.
After high school I told myself I'd quit if I married a non-smoker.
After I married a non-smoker I told myself I'd quit before we ever have kids.
After I had kids I said I'd quit if I ever had a health scare.

As I drove to my throat biopsy, smoking, I finally had to admit to myself that I was never going to quit... so I told myself I'll quit when I'm dead.

Smoking for nearly 30 years, last couple of years started to roll cigs, without filter. Strong, rum flavored tobacco. I tried to quit when my mother died two years ago from pancreatic cancer - she begged me to quit - she was telling me about the wrecks shuffling in oncology ward - lung cancer victims. Tried patches at that time, gave me skin rash after two weeks, gums were just horrible and the nicorette inhaler is a joke - totally hated it.

Then just before Christmas I was chairing a meeting with few high powered execs from overseas - I somehow noticed that they casting some funny stares at my hand - then I realized they're looking at yellow-brown colored patch of tobacco stain on my thumb and index finger which I was cleaning everyday, but missed it that day.

I felt so disgusted with myself and I could see the disgust on the people faces...I'm also only smoker in our company. So I decided to quit right there and then. After 2 days I started to climb the walls with so bad withdrawal symptoms that I bought packet of inhalers again just to get my nic fix back. It helped with the headache, but what I realized that what I'm missing the most is the actual smoke exhalation (the inhaler gives that hand-mouth action, but sucking on that piece of cheap plastic really sucks...)

And so I did some googling around (honestly, I wasn't aware that such a thing as e-cigarette exists, despite working in the field of electronics) and HERE WE GO I FOUND THE E-CIG! After watching dozens of YouTube clips I started to have a warm feeling that THING could be my ticket to quit burning tobacco.

Just few days later I ordered my eGo starter pack, got some nic juices from China (only 0 nic juice can be sold in Australia) and I haven't touched tobacco since. Way to go.

And less than a month into e-cigs, I decided to vape with the big boys and ordered nothing less but the mighty PROVARI mod. :)

Cheers,

Lad
