Hey all. I'm looking to get into DIY and have a good amount of 48mg nic on the way in the mail. Began looking into flavors (particularly TFA), but quickly realized I didn't know what was safe and what wasn't.

I know that PG, VG, water, natural/artificial flavoring, and ethyl alcohol are good to vape (preferably steep that alcohol out of there though). Just looking for a red light/green light on essential oils, triacetin, milk derivatives, polysorbates, and (of all things) vitamins. Are these things safe to vape?

Here & There
I would personally stay away from flavors that contain diacetyl commonly found in some buttery, creamy or milky type flavors. You want flavors that are based in PG VG or alcohol with no extra chemicals---just flavoring. TFA lists which ones are not recommended for vaping but the truth of the matter is no flavoring has been deemed safe for vaping. I'd stick with the brands that other DIYers have used Capella's, TFA, Chinese super concentrated, Hangsen, Flavorwest, Nature's Flavors, etc.

Do not use oils and stuff that contains diacetyl

Nothing is safe btw, its a general trend it seems, is this safe ? You smoke most likely a couple of year, and you did not care, and all of the sudden people start to care :). Even the nicotine is still unhealthy.

it's quite funny to see actually. yes this "might" be the healthier (read as it is for me), but is it safe ? Not really, but breathing in polluted air isn't safe either. I quit smoking about 1,5 year ago, and I just stick with the know brands for DIY juice. I am happier, healthier so I do not care anymore. I know by just looking at the ingredients, this is/should be alot healthier

Green and red lights are not easy to give. Varying degrees of yellow, maybe...

To say that any of those things, other than reasonable amounts of distilled water, are safe to inhale in aerosolized form would be a grossly misleading statement, IMO.

We have no long-term studies available for our exact application, and it's impossible to study all combinations and concentrations of chemicals used in vaping, anyway.

There are some studies on inhaling PG vapor that indicate that it can cause some form of decreased lung function. There may be others that say it's safe at a certain exposure level. I don't think that VG is well-studied for our purposes. Alcohol is a known toxin.

Most flavorings are not studied much for inhalation effects, except for occupational safety purposes, and they don't tell us what chemicals are in them, anyway.

The only thing in your second list that I'd consider vaping is triacetin, as it seems to be similar to PG at a glance. The others are highly questionable to me.

Ok thank you. Funny, that was the one ingredient that seemed iffy to me lol.

And yes everybody, I know very well that none of the ingredients we vape (flavors in particular) have been studied long-term for adverse health effects and therefore, we can't truly say it's 'safe' to vape at all. But I started this thread in regards to the specific ingredients I had listed because I was seeing alot of those over at TFA, and am thinking about where to get my first few flavors from.

Sorry if my earlier post was a bit blunt. Now that I read it again, I guess I could have done that better, but I couldn't imagine anyone giving any definitive answers.

Of course, many vape small amounts of ethanol. Personally, it irritates my airways, so I avoid it.

Here's TPA's info on triacetin:

Perfumers Apprentice - Triacetin

Some vape oil-based flavorings, but many think it's a bad idea. I have no specific info to give on that, though I've seen a highly questionable news story about someone dying from lipid pneumonia by vaping oils linked to on these forums some months ago.

ECF takes a dim view on adding vitamins, as I recall.

Milk derivatives and polysorbates, I know nothing about, but they just sound like a bad thing to vape to me... ;)

Main thing is, most of us are looking for harm reduction, and each has their own idea about how to go about it. I've actually had to argue that diacetyl is not worth the risk, here.

I'd suggest researching any non-mainstream things before you try them, and decide for yourself. Maybe you can post back what you find, too. Good luck. :)
