Green Lane, Pa
Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there!

FC, if I could get a good price for maintenance free astro turf, I'd be in. One thing good about cutting loan twice from a foot lawn is that all the bare spots get filled in with green and it looks great until the cutting turn brown. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and have the lawn people aerate the lawn this year and overseed. I did some spot seeding when I thought for sure I'd be successful and nada. I don't take complete failure well.

Roth I would verticut instead of aerating. I think you get better coverage that way. I go both directions when I do it and then overseed. The neighbor and I go in halves on renting one. Not to toot my own horn but he and I have the nicest lawns on the street.

All this lawn talk is bumming me out. i've been fighting this lawn for 6 seasons now and it still looks terrible. the entire front yard is under shade but it gets enough sun to kill off the shade tolerant grasses i've tried...

the parentals are coming by for a visit today - we'll drink some coffee and eat lunch.should be fun.

Gutter I use a mixed grass seed called bluemaster from a local nursery. It's mostly bluegrass with some rye.

aaaah cool. thanks man.I've given up on a whole lawn of the same thing - at this point i just want it to all be green and level.

you buy anything at the yard sale the other day?

we grilled out today and bought some plants. it's gotten freaking hot all of the sudden and i'm sitting down recovering with:

Wow, that was a close one. Another minute and it woulda been history for another year.

roth and hitt, you guys work too hard on that lawn care stuff. I prefer to set my mower deck on "sub-terrain mining" mode and see if there's any dinosaur bones to be had for Koda.

I didn't buy anything but the kids bought a few things. I don't mean to bore you with the lawn stuff but I put a fair amount of effort into keeping mine up.

    Hit,
it's not boring at all - that's just defeat you hear in my posts :)
This yard has just been a real pain - we live in an old neighborhood and there's lots of really huge trees ( well a few less after that last round of tornadoes..) and it seems i'm not the only one with a spotty yard.I'm definitely going to check in to some seed mixes and see if i can get anything to take by overseeding the little bit that's here now.

Good morning. TV, I have a pretty small lawn and live in a subdivision so it's not too much work to keep my lawn up.

TV, have you checked your pm's lately?

Gutter, I know it can be difficult with large trees. My brother in law has a giant tree that drops these spike ball things and it drives him nuts. I have a pretty big maple tree on one side of my driveway and luckily have been able to maintain the grass under it. I fertilize and water regularly. I think the big trees pull most of the water and nutrients out of the soil so I add what I can to try to make something available for the grass.

Roth, my dear hubby would be mowing the astro-turf. I have considered doing an intervention, but it really is a fairly harmless addiction.

hitt, sounds like your bro has a chestnut tree. They definitely a huge pain in the .....

Gutter, It's unconventional, but crop grasses really do grow nearly ANYWHERE. We have clover, alfalfa, timothy, and orchard grass in our lawn. It's incredibly drought and water tolerant. High traffic areas don't do any better than regular grass, but the shade doesn't kill it. Most farm supply stores carry the mix, but we got ours from local farmers. If you don't require the slender uniform blades of grass, it works. We only have to water once a week if it's like 90+ and hasn't rained.

Taking Mom's jeep in to the shop tomorrow to find out why the right rear wheel is grinding and squeaking when we had $300 worth of new brakes and rotors put on it 2 weeks ago.

Evenin' all :). fc, that's a pretty nifty idea. Not that I have any bald spots in the yard since there's always weeds willing to fill in and do their part to keep it green, but a cool idea just the same. Good luck on the warranty work. The mechanic was probably wondering why he had all those leftover parts :?:.

Yes sir. I sent a reply last night. I hope things aren't getting wacky again with the forum. After all, I spend a lot of important company time loitering here......

I guess,to be fair, the thread title does say what's under your lip and you might put an atomizer partly under your lip. But, you would think the "in your nose" part would turn the lightbulb on.

seriously though - i got nothing tonight. Thanks for the heads up on the grass firechick -i'll definitely look into it.

It's interesting you mention the trees pulling nutrients out of the soil. During all the tornadoes, i noticed alot of the huge oaks have really, really shallow rootsystems. Those trees are in the same yards with crappy grass/sandy soil. this one was right across the street - you can see how shallow the roots were and how crappy the grass was.The house was a foreclosure and the grass hadn't been mowed in two months or so :
    parkby.jpg

That tree was probably 75 feet tall and 4 feet around and the roots went down MAYBE 4 feet.

Good morning. Wow gutter, those roots were shallow weren't they. That's hard to believe that tree stayed in the ground at all.

Well it's starting to seem like Monday here at work again. I had to take half a day off yesterday so I when I walked in the door this morning they were on me before I could even make it to my desk to sit my coffee cup down. It seems to be going down hill from there. I just wasn't in the mind set to start scrambling first thing this morning. The only upside I can think of right now is that I have to go do a service call some time this morning so at least that will get me away from the axxholes for a little bit. Ok, another phone call. Gotta go.

Gutter I know I probably sound foolish but it's one of my pet peeves to be screwed with in the morning before I even get to set my stuff down. Not to mention I wasn't even officially on the clock yet even though I'm salary my start time is 7:30. I just got back from two service calls and sat down to eat lunch. Of course the folks out front could care less if I'm eating and went ahead and transferred a call to me. Supposedly a machine that I worked on last week isn't running right. I don't send anything out without testing it and trying it out myself. Who knows what happened. It would appear that I'm having my Monday again. I think I'll start my afternoon with some
