What's Up With This "Throat Hit" Thing?

Being somewhat new to vaping, the first time I read a comment on here about throat hit, I pictured a karate chop to the Adams apple.

So now I understand what it is, kind of. It seems to be that stinging sensation you can get in your throat. But I still don't get why that's good.

When I smoked, I would poke four holes in the filter, just to let some more and cooler air in. Otherwise it would make my throat sting. I didn't like that, and I don't understand why anyone would.

But now I'm seeing people say things like, "it has a great throat hit." Huh? Why is that good?

Or am I mistaken about exactly what throat hit is?

It's essentially the same sensation you get from smoking an actual cigarette. It's one of the major components that makes the transition from analogs to vaporizers suitable and easy. Ideally, when you vape you want some sort of "feel" to it. The smaller ratio of PG to VG increases vapor production and sacrifices that "feel." Taking into consideration increased airflow, sub ohm resistance, etc., this makes the feel of just in taking air. Like a sucking air through a straw and not getting any soda feel.

All I know is that if my throat is burning, especially after I put it down, it makes me think that something is wrong.

However, I also can't understand people who like hot peppers. They burn my mouth, overpower any flavor in what I'm eating, and my mouth and throat burn even after I'm finished eating. But apparently they have their own good reasons to like it. I guess it's the same with throat hit. Personally, I can absolutely do without it.

I go more for the flavor and relaxation. Well, and I like gizmos.

If you don't like the throat hit (vaping throat hit is much different then a smoking one) I suggest upping your vgand lowering pg content in your juice. Basically pg is the hit and vg is the vapor I go back and forth from 80vg/20 pg to 70vg/30pg and when I switch the first few puffs almost choke me. You can go to 100% vg but some mixers straight vg is very thick and doesn't wick well. Nic % will also play a factor in throat hit.

I always figured it was for people who liked Winstons or some other harsh cigarette.

I don't know how people use 50/50 with nic. I tried a few friends and it feels like a million tiny needles in my lungs. Then when they try mine they always like how smooth it is.

I much prefer the feeling of seeing a big vapor cloud over the giant sting in my chest, but it really is all about preference. Just like everything else in vaping.

Right. I already tried a couple bottles at 100% VG, but it didn't do it. So now I'm going to reduce the nicotine.

I also discovered that steeping seems to lessen the burn effect.

And the flavor doesn't come through as much with full VG, unless the vendor automatically increases it or if you select extra flavor "shots." I didn't get the extra shots, then found out later that I should have.

Without steeping, the nic burn vastly over-powered the flavors, except for a somewhat sweet taste.

I've been reading that some juices don't require much, if any steeping. I'd like to see a list of those! Since I don't have a collection of juices yet, I don't have any "old reliables" to use while I'm waiting for new arrivals to mellow out. Fortunately, I managed to develop a real distaste for cigarettes in the last three months since I started vaping---so now my only problem is finding some juices that are satisfactory.

If a VG juice is too thick, what is the effect of adding a little distilled water. I've read that some add about 10%. Have you ever tried that---does it change the taste any?

Love the throat hit. I buy or mix my own juice to be 70% PG / 30% VG and sometimes I go as much as 80% PG. To me a juice that doesn't provide a good TH is like sucking air, why bother????? I tired some 65% VG juice once, if it hadn't been for the vapor I would have thought my PV was not firing.

P.S. I love hot peppers, sandwiches, pizza and my morning omelet all require hot peppers. :)

Many people use distilled water to cut the VG. 5-10% seems to be the norm. Most of the ones you get from a juice manufacturer will be cut a little to begin with. It will definitely lower the taste a little if you do it more. The nicotine has a peppery burn to it. It's higher concentration than what you get in a cigarette because it doesn't get into your system as efficiently in vapor. The molecules of vapor are 10 times bigger than smoke and don't infuse into your lungs much. They get into your mouth and nasal passages more. Just the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

If you're talking bought liquids it doesn't take much, just a drop or two can change the thickness a lot. That small amount shouldn't change the flavor.

Well, I have to say that the few times that (I guess) my rig was somehow tuned just right, with the juice mellowed out, and I got a totally smooth draw, it did feel like something was missing. Kind of took me by surprise.

I think I can get accustomed to the smoothness, and also to being able to taste the flavors. I have some flavor extracts and some 12mg/mL VG base due to arrive this week, and I have some straight VG on hand, so I'm hoping to find out....

I've read that peppers have loads of vitamin C in them, plus other health benefits. So pep on!

(And go Oath Keepers!)

Yes, bought liquids, plus I'm going to mix some of my own this week.

I've also read that some people add a little alcohol, like vodka, to thin their VG mix. I'm not too sure about doing that, seeing as I seem to have a sensitive throat to begin with. It seems like it would make it sting even more.

The two bottles of 100% VG that I've gotten so far didn't seem overly thick. They seemed to work fine in my bottom coil clearomizer.

So that's what's going on with the nic. My first vapes with the all VG juices made me sneeze when I blew it out my nose. That was a bit of a surprise....

And yes, it left my mouth stinging, too. Well I'll just cut back on the nic now. Thanks.
