I got home from a weeklong trip and rebuilt my three Penelopes this morning. I figure there are lots of newbies with Penelopes now that may not have a multimeter or know much about ohms. I thought I would share my favorite coil but expressed in layman's terms.

I used 36ga Kanthal wire and 30 ga dead soft silver wire for NR. 36 is best for HV and 32 is best for LV.

I cut the resistance wire to 1.5" long. I twist the silver wire about 1/4" from each side. This yields a resistance wire with an effective length of 1" with the NR silver on either side. The 1" length gives me 4 nice, lose wraps around the 3mm stock wick. The end result is 3.4-3.7ohms which I find is perfect for my 7.4v vaping.

Hope this helps the newbies. What's your favorite coil set-up?

My favorite seems to be in the range of 2.7-3.2 ohms with the stock 34ga nichrome wire for 6v vaping, wrapped around a doubled 2mm wick (I haven't used the new wick size in Ody, yet). I do other builds in all kinds of ohms with either nichrome or kanthal, but that one is my most common setup. I'm not sure the wire length offhand, though, I measure it with a multimeter before I cut it to length instead of going by physical dimensions

Is there an effective way to measure the resistance? I have a Klein Tools multimeter and every time I try to check the resistance after I twist the wires (make the coil) it is all over the place. Ranging from 19 ohms to 36 ohms. I am using 34 ga kanthal, usually between 1 to 1 1/2 inch. I know how to use a multimeter. I used to work in electronics repair. Maybe my multimeter just sucks.

Also, is there a way to measure it after installing it in the ceramic?

if you know the resistance of 1 meter wire then you know how much cm you need to make the desired resistance SS. But every awg has different resistances per meter. To see what is going on please check here:

http://www.wires.co.uk/acatalog/E-CIG_IATTY_ATOMIZER_WIRE.html

On the first picture you will see this:

10 Metres 0.132mm Nickel Chrome Wire

Ref: NC0132-010M

Price: £4.00 (~€5.00) (Excluding VAT at 20%)

0.132mm 39 SWG Bare Nickel Chrome Wire (also known as Nichrome Wire / Hot Wire Cutter / Foam Cutter / Heater Wire / Element Wire)

Data: approx 78.9 ohms per metre,

Recomended for use in ODYSSEUS and PENELOPE atomizers

check the red letters. They show you the resistance per meter

The next picture is a fatter wire. You will see there that its resistance per meter is smaller.

That way you will know every time what your resistance is, depending on the wire you use. The only you need is a small rule:)

my personal favorite is dual coil 36ga wrap around 4 1.5mm wick up and 2 coming down @ 2.8ohm on 7.4 volt with my oddy... super strong throat hit and flavor is still very good. It never burns if you give enough juice.

Been trying out 0.8ohm dual coil on the penelope on 3.7.. not too happy.. i still prefer the throat hit of the HV.

Thanks for starting this thread as it helps newbies like me. Just curious what length of nr wire do you use? 2 inches on each side?

Good question and glad you asked. I use about 1.5" for the side that gets wrapped around the bottom nut and just a half inch on the side that goes down the metal channel. Do you have a Penelope or a V2 Ody? The V1 Ody's got the little bit of NR compressed under the top not. Either way, you don't need much and as you make more coils, you'll get handy with anticipating your needs. In the beginning I used tons of wires but now am able to cut minimum amounts. Also love the new 3mm wick as it lasts twice as long. No need to double up like on the original 1.5mm wick.

For the sake of the newbies, I ask that if you're expounding on your favorite coils, please express the "formula" in inches or centimeters until they fully understand ohms. Length is easy to measure with a ruler, not everyone has a multi meter. I do agree a Multi Meter is eventually needed

Here's a nice one on Amazon for $20 bucks. I am not selling nor recommending Amazon bla bla bla. Just trying to help the newbies understand what a MM is.

I will let someone more electrical than I explain it's use. I'm a mechanical guy and it it don't use grease or a hammer... I don't know much more than setting the thing on Ohms and reading the numbers.
Hope this helps

The service life of the coil - three weeks.
Every day, do a dry ignition.

Nice picture Sergei. I like the zig zag pattern on the coils. I'm going to try that.

Is that one full 3mm wick and a small section of extra 3mm under the coils only? It's a little hard to see but it looks like just a piece of extra 3mm in the coil

Thanks for the info Torq, I don't have a Penelope yet just gathering as much info as possible. I'll be running on a mini provari so whatever it ohms out to I'll just adjust to my sweet spot. On the DID the ohms were jumping all over the place so hopefully I won't get that with this rba. The nice thing about higher ohms I've found is that the battery life is better due to less current being drawn. Also do you experience any metallic taste from the kanthal wire being used? In Scott's review he mentioned a metallic/burnt flavor at first. I've read where some flame the wire before wrapping the coil
