Hi souroull... Maybe you tight the coil over the wick too much ... Try to use a pin while you make your coil between wire and wick :)

It was the other way around, i was winding the coil too loosely and didnt make enough contact with the wick, which would explain burnt taste even on 2-3 second drags.

I tried a couple of coils with using more force and are much much better than the previous. I now max out at around 13 watt before i get the burnt taste. I still need some improvement but i'll slowly get there.

Bumpin this thread back up Torque cause I think it's so informative. Don't consider myself a newb here but I always want to be teachable. Just tried your setup and it came out to exactly 3.5 ohm. Previously I always went for low resistance but this is great. Good flavor and plenty of throat hit. I like!!! Thanks again.
I got home from a weeklong trip and rebuilt my three Penelopes this morning. I figure there are lots of newbies with Penelopes now that may not have a multimeter or know much about ohms. I thought I would share my favorite coil but expressed in layman's terms.

I used 36ga Kanthal wire and 30 ga dead soft silver wire for NR. 36 is best for HV and 32 is best for LV.

I cut the resistance wire to 1.5" long. I twist the silver wire about 1/4" from each side. This yields a resistance wire with an effective length of 1" with the NR silver on either side. The 1" length gives me 4 nice, lose wraps around the 3mm stock wick. The end result is 3.4-3.7ohms which I find is perfect for my 7.4v vaping.

Hope this helps the newbies. What's your favorite coil set-up?

I'm not the expert on this ob but I'm thinking it's the length and size of the resistance wire that determines the resistance more so than the # of wraps. Ofcourse # of wraps could be a factor also.
Does anyone just wrap the R wire around the wicks first so that you end up with the number of wraps you want, and then attach the NR wire to the appropriate spots after the fact?

I am guessing this would work in a similar manner to measuring before?

Glad you like it Smitty. In 36ga, you get approx one coil per 1/4" as a good rule of thumb. If I'm wrapping a coil for sweeter juices like Bounty Hunter or Bobas, I typically do 5 wraps with 1 1/4" net resistance length and it will yield about 4.2-4.5ohms for a cooler vape on HV. What I find is that LR while it produces good vapor, it just doesn't give me the warm vapor that I enjoy from HV.
For the less sweet tobacco juices like Torque56 or Tribecca, I still prefer 3-3.5ohms for a hotter vape, especially in the morning when I need my nicotine fix quick

i've also found that number of wraps or the spacing in between doesnt play that much of a role in the result. maybe around 10%, if that.

I've started doing this.. I find it easier to get the ohms i want. Just wrap the number of turns then cut off the R wire and attach the NR wire.

Just read the thread again.. Been looking for some more "coil guide's". The thing i dont understand is why people with 6v pv's want LR coils..

Ex:
1.6 ohm coil vaped at 4.1 volts = 10.5 watts
2.5 ohm coil vaped at 5,1 volts = 10.4 watts
3.4 ohm coil vaped at 6.0 volts = 10.5 watts

All of these are the same wattage. but the last one on 3.4 ohms will draw 1.75 ish amps off the battery while the 1.6 coil will draw 2.55 amps!

Im currently vaping on a 3.1 ohm coil and i dont like it at all. Even at 10 watts. I think unloaded in a post a few pages back wrote something about favouring LR coils for some reason. I really wonder why it semes i do this myself and others also. Are there anything else than ohms volts and amps to take into the calculation that makes the good vape? :glare:
